My preferred coin dealer would use bolt cutters on fake coins or small slabs. The bolt cutters cut enough to see inside, no dust, no noise (unless the piece snapped). Someone brought in a 10oz "silver" commemorative round one day while I was there. When told it was fake, "not silver," she allowed it to be cut. Looked like copper inside and the owner gave her the price for 10oz copper just to keep the piece to demo in his shop collection.

you mention the sweet ping of real silver coins... as a youth in the mid 60's, used to work mcdonald's counter. you could hear the sweet difference between a silver dime or quarter when it hit the stainless steel counter! the small things... :D

Thank You ! Helps to know what to look for ! This revelation that there are so many fakes and that they have always been around gives me nightmares ! I've saved 90% since I was a kid. Worked at a grocery store and bought all the 90% I could . Atleast it was all for face value back then . I never dreamed any of it could be fake , this really is a nightmare ! Geeze ! Thanks again for showing what to look for . It gives me some hope that those dealers could see it right away and I've bought a lot from one dealer over the last 10 years or so. He says he doesn't need a sigma , he can tell. This video backs that up. Thanks again !

There for a while they didn't. There are also ones made out of steel that are magician's stunt coins, which weigh around 19 grams.

I bought a scale, calibers, and a pocket pinger before I saw this video. I downloaded a phone app that hears the ping to verify silver until I get use to the correct ping sound.

I would say fakes made now are better than fakes made in the past. However, we have a lot more tools now too. Sigma, density test, XRD, ping, weight test, and the ability to talk to ecah other at a push of a button. I feel counterfeiting is moving towards faking the slabs now.

This is known as Tibetan Silver. It is made of pot metal like copper, nickel and zinc and a small amount of silver or gold. It is primarily used in jewelry making but Chinese knockoffs of Morgan dollars have been struck from planchets of this metal using poorly copied dies resulting in the smooth rims and shabby details. It should also be known that producing, attempting to sell or transfer and even knowingly possessing counterfeit US currency is a federal offense and can result in felony charges that carry penalties up to $250,000 and 10 years in prison. They take this type of activity very seriously. I have sniffed out and reported many fakes on Ebay. Usually I buy the items, light the seller up by email, get my money back and report them. Lastly, don't ever let anyone soften you up by acting like they didn't know what they were selling. I get this all the time. Also the claim of "we don't grade coins" or "we are not coin people" are frequently used as a defense. This is crapola! They know full well what they are selling.

Believe it or not it's only illegal to possess it with the intent to defraud. There is a reason I only did this with a Coin Dealer that I know personally, because I wouldn't want someone to accuse me of actually trying to pass these off and think it was anything other than educational.

Im late , but thanks for this video and explaining hoe you can tell by looking at them. They still would be a little harder to spot for people like me that isn't around them. But i only buy new stuff from one dealer. Edit i failed the test . I thought the worn out one was the fake.

I spotted the 1900 straight away, it just looked...wrong. I always carry a small scale and a magnet for just such a reason, I'll even check the dealers' coins, even at the LCS's, better safe than sorry and if the dealer takes offence, that's a red flag that something isn't right with the dealer, hard pass there.

I love collecting coins, the most expensive one I have is $3,400 it's a 1795 Flowing hair. I break my coins out of the slabs because I like to feel them, except for a couple proofs that I have. I just wanted to let your viewers know we have very spine jewelry where I live that sells coins and jewelry and watches and they do a lot of business with coins and currency in dollars and recently they’ve had an influx and people bringing in jewelry trying to sell it that they got off the street that’s fake. There’s a lot of people buying jewelry off someone that comes up to him and says I have found this and get people to buy it and it’s fake.

Actually the law very specifically states "with the intent to defraud". Just owning them in and of itself is not a crime. They would have to prove that your intent was to use them to defraud others, and it's quite clear that's not what I'm doing here.

One time at my flea market table I took a roll of counterfeit Morgans and sold them to some old dude for $1,000. After the flea I went to the casino and turned that $1,000 into $63,000 and I met a pretty redhead. God was with me that day.
