My first guitar amp in the 70s was a tube PA - something made in the late 50s for school assemblies I think. I didn't know about impedance matching then, but I did have to buy an adaptor to the 4 pin mic connector. It sounded great with my Japanese Les Paul copy (no-name w/ bolt neck.)

Right on. I’ve seen old pa conversion amps like that and have always wanted to try one. I think they’re called Bogen amps?
@DannyO-j4q Жыл бұрын
@@Chucksguitargeekery Thanks, but no, it wasn't a Bogen. They were a lot better than what I had. I had a budget portable PA unit. It had one speaker in a case with the amp. The amp sat on the bottom and the speaker was on top vertically. I'm pretty sure that it was made in Chicago. Once at a basement birthday party gig someone spilled beer on it, and it shorted. I gave it to a friend who wanted to cannibalize it for the transformers.

used the Realistic 100 watt pa from Radio Shack and a 12 inch home stereo speaker doused in hairspray. our van was robbed and i had no rig for a few months. i hooked a Metal Zone pedal to the PA and played a bunch of gigs. good times.the 90s were fun. I recall playing with it on a bill with John Cugar Concentrationcamp. that PA was my rig opening for Guitar Wolf as well. embarassing but cool.

Leslie West from Mountain famously used a Sunn Coliseum tube PA for the guitar. not sure if he jumpered the 4 channels or had them rewired to cascade but either way it was probably the hairiest all-tube sound for the time. sometimes history can repeat in a cool fun way though. a mixer or a PA with send return jacks for each channel would be super fun to cascade all the channels
@Xmurphy289 ай бұрын
I think Sunn might have helped WEST with the setup that night. Bill Eberline was probably involved. Mr West was all about the "TONE", I saw Mountain PERFORM in Miami in 1969 at the Jackie Gleason Theater and West's Guitar could be heard over everything as it was driven by a Sunn Coliseum P.A. Amplifier that was cranked. I will never forget hearing and feeling the famous Leslie Wes TONE? Humbucker was his second language.

I have done that same thing on the same mixer but I remember hooking up a Roland GP-8 stereo effects through it so I could hear the stereo mode. It was fun! Glad to see other experimenters out there sharing this type of content.

The Peavey XR600B is a bulletproof, made in the USA working man's PA Mixer. At one time I had 3 of these. This is now my backup if my Mackie 808S ever fails. I also use it on occasion to run additional speakers if I play a bigger room. With that said. I can see where this would make a beast of a guitar amp as it has a two ohm minimum load, meaning you can run four - eight ohm speaker cabs from this one amp. Like I said, it's a real beast!!!!!
@Chucksguitargeekery2 жыл бұрын
Indeed a beast! My dad gigged with this one through the 80’s and early 90’s. Then it served me through high school and college bands. This was even in a flooded basement and submerged at one point. Still kickin’

I’ve had one for years…it keeps blowing the output transistors, but a funny story: I was playing through it in my room, smelled something, and when I turned around the cone on the speaker was on fire. I was on the second floor, but luckily there was a balcony in my room. I threw it off and the speaker cabinet burned up in the back yard. I’m not good anyway.

Hell, why not! Use anything that works. Played a Johnny Pro bass back in the late 80's and I used an old Kustom PA head and a custom homemade 2 - 12" cab a friend did not want any more and it had this cool raspy tone that had others asking me how I got that sound. Was playing bass in a 3 piece blues band for a bit at that time. That sure is an over the top More Paul guitar you have there. Did you make it?

Yes, with any guitar preamp you have, you can run it into the effects return/power amp in on a powered mixer and use it to drive a guitar cab if you want a lot of power. I’m sure you could peel paint off the walls with a good cab.

I'm sitting here in my computer room looking at one of those that hasn't been through a flood. Looks pretty pristine. I suspect the eq isn't all jacked too. You could probably use it like a clean amp with all your drive and distortion coming from pedals. That might be nice so you don't have to blow out your ears with the amp's level being maxed for distortion. Hmmm.... Time to buy some pedals! Thanks for this odd bit of inspiration.

How are you recording the audio? Are you using direct input from the speaker out jacks or did you hook it up to some speakers
@Chucksguitargeekery2 жыл бұрын
I actually used a Weber headphone tap on the speaker output, then sent that to a Mooer Radar for Impulse Responses, then I record right to my phone from there through a Roland Go:Mixer.
@SkelaKing2 жыл бұрын
@@Chucksguitargeekery ahh gotcha. I’m trying to record the output from this directly and I’m wondering if the “main/monitor” outputs are line level. I know the speaker outputs will blow my interface without a headphone tap, but maybe the outputs on the front are a low enough signal?
@Chucksguitargeekery2 жыл бұрын
I’m not sure, I’ve never used those on this, but I’m assuming line level. Or, maybe run it through a DI box with a signal pad on it first, just in case?
