As someone who speaks Hebrew its only now clear to me how everyone's names in the bible lost their meaning in translation. Pretty much every name in the bible has a meaning, like you said isaac is יצחק which is "will laugh" cause sarah laughed when she was told she would have a baby. Both sarai (שרי) and abram (אברם) changed their names to show their faith by adding gods letter ה to their name, turning into שרה and אברהם. Esau is עשו which resembles grass so it may be because he came with a full head of hair out of the womb, and עשו is either "ready" cause he came out all grown or "hairy". Jacob is יעקב which either means "will follow" or "by the heel" because jacob came out of the womb holding Esau's heel, following him. Ishmael's name ישמעאל is just the words for "god will hear" (ישמע-אל) because god heard Hagar's prayers and calls for help. Hagar's name הגר is either related to the word immigrant, or the word harbor (as in harbor or house a baby). Adam means human in Hebrew (אדם) and Eve is Hava (חווה) and means farm / barn for some reason.

A fun fact about Jacob’s name (from a guy who’s native language is Hebrew). In Hebrew his name “Yaakov” (יעקוב) and that sounds like the Hebrew word for heel (akev - עקב). In the story, Jacob held Esau’s heel while they got born.

7:35 the Isaac joke is in hebrew but basically in hebrew Isaac's name is יצחק(pronounced itshak) and in hebrew this word means "will laugh" (in hebrew adjectives are diffrent than in english) and it's supposed to be funny because Abraham and Sara laughed when god said they will have a child even though they are very old. also "he laughs" in hebrew is צוחק pronounced tsohek.

I wish this video existed back when I was a christian. My understanding of the book of Genesis was always to be very flawed because I didn't see it as an ancient book, but yes as accurate history that had to somehow fit modern christian dogmas. Now that I am an atheist and also an obsessed student of HIstory, I can say that this kind of videos are really helpful for me to understand these ancient writings. Thanks for your work mate.
