The backcourt area (aka, the "Toyota Fun Zone", aka, the unused portion of the football field) is just used for fan entertainment before and after basketball games. It has some counters selling food and merchandise. The basketball hoops back there are basically like you see at an amusement park, pay a couple bucks to take a shot, and try and win a prize. They normally lower one of them considerably for kids to have a good chance.

The area behind the pullout bleachers is typically packed pregame and gets decently busy at halftime, at least for big games. As somebody else mentioned, the hoops are for a charity free throw contest. The section with the white barricades is where season ticket holders in the bleacher section (I think) can mingle and get food and drinks pregame and at halftime. People with floor seats go to an area off of one of the tunnels. There are usually other events, also, set up behind the bleachers. There's a prize wheel thing. I've seen a halfcourt shot setup. Sometimes autograph sessions with former players. Stuff like that.

East Tennessee State University in Johnson City USED to do basketball and football in the same place…the mini dome. They now have a dedicated football field.

Went to Law School at Cuse which the law school is right across the street from the Carrier Dome. The Dome always was great. There was a hot Dog Food cart I would always go to before games when they set up for game day
