I started with Shetlands and keep a few around because they are half wild and don't take crap from dogs. They broke a dog last year that was bothering the flock. I came out and it was laying along the fence gasping and unable to move, I dispatched it but I was reminded why I keep Shetlands. I don't really recommend them as flock guards but they work for me. Most of my sheep are Romanovs.

So many people in the US seem to get Shetlands as first sheep, because they are little and cute. Then they are wild pains in the butt and people decide to hate keeping sheep because of them. I wish people would do research before buying animals.

It has done damage to the breed, in my opinion. I can find many examples where nice, registered animals were sold to beginners that were excited about the breed, only to have the animals sold off or butchered in couple years’ time.

What does the english law say about keeping livestock guardian dogs at the flock? A nice pyrenean or kangal would shake some sense into those freaky dogs.

Theyd end any troubles with foxes too. I think the English can't have them because of a parasite dogs share with sheep, but have dogs in their pastures all the time. Any dog in our flock is going to have to make friends with my dogs & behave or there are consequences. The parasite comes from dogs eating sheep muscle, and is easy to break by freezing anything you feed from the flock.
