THE INCONVENIENT PODCAST: This bloke Hamish Blake, who I’ve never met, emails me and says ‘come on my Podcast to talk about being a dad’. Sure, I say, but what about I film a whacky adventure on the way to the studio with my daughter so we have something to talk about? Hamish thinks this is a great idea and suggests he does the same with his kids and we meet halfway between his place and mine. Google tells me the halfway point is 345 km from each of us, which happens to be a lake, and on that lake is an island. How bloody perfect is that! Off we set to record the world’s most inconvenient podcast.

The stark contrast between Beau - a lifelong adventurer, and Hamish - a presumably lifelong urbanite (albeit one with very nice dry bags and duffels) - was so incredibly entertaining. I think in other Beau videos, you just get so engrossed that you forget the more common perspective that Hamish brings in this video.

If there's one takeaway from this video, it's that everyone is just winging it and praying it works out, that's the beauty of life! We don't always have to know exactly what we're doing or where we're going, as long as we remember to stop, smell the roses, sing with the animal bones, and enjoy the beauty of the journey! That's what matters, that to me is how you win at life - just enjoy it, mistakes and triumphs alike. All the best, I'm sure you're doing great 😄

I know someone who chose not to have kids (overpopulation), but also chose to be present in the lives of kids around them. Some places have buddy programs for kids who don't have dads, so they can have a good male role model in their life. Or just be present and helpful to parents around you. Offer to carry the heavy pack and accompany them on their next adventure.

So refreshing and so inspiring - who wants a Maccas when you could have a cup of something cooked over a stick fire on the side of the road with Beau. We should all aspire for “ inconvenient adventures”. More, please Beau!

Loved this! A bit different from the usual stories but no less perfect. And hamish seems the sort of bloke you'd like to know. And May's comment "they're coming, how fun!" just melted my heart!

This is one of the best youtube vids I have seen. Being outdoors as much as possible is one of the best ways to raise kids. They may not remember the details when they are three, or five, or seven years old, but they will absorb the sense of belonging in the bush, the outback, on the water, or on a trail. As they grow up, I think it gives young people a sense of confidence that they can cope with all things and work out problems for themselves. Well done to both of the dads!

That was the best idea I've seen in ages. Going on an adventure with your kids can't think of anything better. Now I've got to plan my own with my boys.
