40 days eating only canned beans (191 tins)

Inspired by a half-page scene in John Steinbeck's Tortilla Flat, where a family of poor, super healthy kids eat an almost exclusive bean diet, Beau decides to do much the same thing.
Eating only the contents of 191 tins of beans over 40 days transforms Beau into The Human Bean, and in doing so gives him a front row seat into how one food, totally and utterly, dictates how he feels. Beau uses his intimate knowledge of running to compare his former self to his bean-self, logging lacklustre training for an ultramarathon that he plans on running during the final day of the experiment. Epiphanies are had, saddles are blazed, and genuine insight emerges from what is strangely appealing day-to-day of mediocrity.

I am autistic and I seriously, really, intensely love beans. They are the cornerstone of my diet in every form, but my favorite is ham and beans. I use smoked ham hocks and cubed pork tenderloin along with the usual fixings and spices, and cornbread. I fill a 5 gallon Dutch oven with ham and beans(1lb Lima beans, 1lb great northern, 1lb split peas) weekly and 2lb ham+bones to eat for the week. It’s incredible. So cheap, very filling and comforting, easy to slow cook, and great drunk food.

i tell you my favorite bean recipe: add into a big pot: 1 spoon of flour, 1 spoon of tomatoeconcentrate, a little oil, salt, pepper, then you add water and mix everything well, then you add bell paprica, carott and potato, add now your beans or later, let it cook for 30 minutes, add some uncooked rice, let it cook for 20 more minutes, let it rest a bit, add herbs and spices, and enjoy friendly friend face.

I"m 78. I grew up poor just outside of a small town much like Mayberry in the USA. We ate lots of dry beans in the winter and I loved them. We had a huge garden to supplement our diet in the summer and my mom canned a lot of stuff for the winter. My dad caught about 4k herring in the spring from the local creek and we ate pickled herring most of the year. We couldn't afford pop and snacks from the store and we were probably much healthier for it.

I once did the potato diet for 30 days, nothing but potatoes which I boiled and then diced and fried them and put just a little bit of low sugar ketchup on them. I lost 25 pounds, had a clear head, and lots of energy! Everyone thought I was nuts but I had read about a man from Australia who had been living on nothing but potatoes for over a year and had lost 100 pounds. Only problem was, by the end of that 30 days I was so totally sick of potatoes that I couldn't eat even one over the next year LOL

It's your typical vegan effect. Could've replaced the potatoes with any other veggie with the same outcome. During the honeymoon phase you always feel great. Until your body's stores are depleted and the starvation related autophagy begins. Then all kinds of health issues set in and you feel like crap 24/7. Basically that's the end result of any kind of restricted diet. We're omnivores after all. We get our nutrients from all kinds of different food sources. Greens, fruits, grains, fish, dairy, meats, eggs... We can't stick to only one type of food for good, because then we get into a deficit of certain vitamins, aminoacids or minerals that only the other foods contain. We need the variety and we also need the right balance of it all. It's so simple but it's also not. Depends on your own approach to the matter.
@TheStruggler101

@Mr know it all How can you compare a vegan diet to a diet of only beans or potatos? A vegan diet just means it excludes all animal products and it can be as simple, varied, healthy or unhealthy as you see fit. Any nutritionist will tell you that a diet (vegan or otherwise) that is varied and includes a wide range of different foods is more likely to be optimal than a diet that is restrictive, because your obviously going to get a wide range of nutrients and various other things compared to a restricted diet. All of the largest nutrition organisations on the planet agree that an appropriately planned vegan diet (a wide variety of foods, mostly whole foods, limited processed foods etc) is perfectly healthy for all stages of the human life cycle. There is so much misinformation around, and people claiming that your going to be nutrient deficient if you don't consume any animal products, but the scientific literature does not support this. Even using basic logic and facts can tell you this is nonsense. For example, most vitamins and minerals need to be replenished on a daily basis. Only a few vitamins such as b12 and vitamin A can be stored for any significant amount of time (4 yrs for b12 and 4 months for Vit A). Many millions of people have been eating diets void of animal products for many years and decades. I've been Vegan 6 years myself and I am still waiting for the magic nutrient deficiencies and brain fog or whatever the hell some people talk about. A lot of the time diet isn't even what is causing these people problems, there are many factors that go into good health not just diet.

Next time try only potatoes. Excellent source of carbs and very easy to live on for months. I did it for 7 months with just spuds and like you, tea. I was obese and at the end of my 7 months I had lost 30kg. It turns out if you are eating something you love that is full of complex carbs its seriously easy to accomplish. Potatoes are still my dietary mainstay and I am now down to my lowest ever adult weight, probably lower than when I was a teenager. Eat complex carbs and you can't go wrong. I bet your marathon times would be excellent if they were spud fuelled.

What sort of preparations of potatoes did you mostly eat? Obviously fried ones aren't nearly as healthy, but I couldn't imagine eating boiled potatoes for 7 months. Did you do the all the cooking and whatnot yourself? Now that you've finished with the potato only diet is over, what is your preferred preparation of potato?

@@tja62000 Eating only potatoes isn't healthy long term either, they don't have everything you'd need though you can get away with subbing in button mushrooms for protein and other nutrients potatoes don't cover but it's still a sub-optimal choice as meat will always be the most healthy thing for you, in moderation of course. It's nutrient dense and the vast majority of animals have at least *something* in them that would provide you the nutrients you need. (It is a well functioning animal, it makes sense that their parts would contribute to the good function of an animal further up the food chain.) Humans have developed for millions of years off of eating meat after all. Pursuit predation is a big part of proto-humanity's pre-civilization hunting strategy, following behind an animal until we literally walk it to death. Incapable of resting the thing we're chasing eventually keels over and dies from the stress or is so weak you can just dispatch it where it lay. It's why humans are bar none, the most endurance focused species on this planet. There is literally nothing else in our weight class that can even come close. Even wolves/dogs, our closest competitor can barely keep up with us, it's the primary reason they developed into the hunting companions that they are. Two apex predators working together for the betterment of both. So yes, meat good. Just don't eat too much, especially organ meats which can do bad things to your hemoglobin count and blood pressure (Speaking as someone who can't have organ meats too often for that reason.) If you ate a little bit of every major part of a cow you could survive off of literally only that if necessary, even things like vitamin C can be obtained from the liver. So meat and potatoes is, unironically, a very healthy option. Add in a bit of full fat milk and an egg a day and you have a very nutritious balance of all of what you need. 4-6 ounces of meat a day along with those other options can keep you going for a very long time. About the only thing I'd add to that kind of diet is some form of citrus to pad out the Vitamin C requirements.

Best way is to get a ninja foodi pressure cooker or an instapot pressure cooker. Just rinse your dried beans, pick out any stones or other detritus that might be in there. Dump in the pot and add seasonings, onions, garlic, plus water and pressure cook on high for 25 minutes give or take, then natural pressure release for 10. You can mix in some hot precooked meats after if you like.

@@thedoctor7158I would think soaking dried beans for 24 hours would make them more nutritious. I can tell the difference when I went to cooking beans without soaking them 12-24 hours open air or w a cotton cloth covering loosely). Massive difference in how I felt and my gut.
@thedoctor7158
@thedoctor7158 5 ай бұрын
@@WeatherMoon The nutritional difference between soaking and not soaking is negligible. The only difference would be for those who have trouble digesting the types of complex sugars in beans for that you want to soak.
