Janko, I really appreciate hearing a different and intellectual perspective compared to all of the other glowing reviews out there on the 992 GT3 Touring…it’s refreshing and respectable. Wow, I think the biggest shock for me was to hear your sold the 718 Spyder. I have been following you for a very long time and I don’t think I’ve ever seen you smile with that much joy as you did whenever you were in your Spyder. If it is truly the ending of an era for a NA Spyder, it may be the one that got away that you never stop thinking about. Great content as always! Cheers.

Janko hit it on the nail. This is exactly the frame of mind I found myself in especially after my Trans-Borneo Tour 2020 in my 993. Back to basics and loving it. I don't care to own a 992 Porsche GT3. I'll cherish the 997.2 GT3 that I have cos that's back to basics for me - total engagement as a driver.

You make a lot of valid points, there’s absolutely no point in spec’ing a car weight saving mods with weighty options but my understanding and appreciation of the GT3 has always been the race car with excellent road compatibility. A lot of the suggestions you made I feel would be suited for the RS models.

Please take into consideration that it is a huge step from the 992 GT3 to 991.2 GT3. The 992 GT3 is not as much fun to drive on the open road believe me. The problem is not its engineering it is one of a class, but you have to drive 50% faster in corners to experience it in comparison to the 991.2 GT3. And when the speed reaches jail speed I'm out. The car gives you so much more confidence going fast and in addition, it's actually boring to drive at a slow speed. That's why it is a 100% track car, you need a track to experience the 992 GT3, public roads are not good enuff. Therefore the option I listed is much valid. When I read all the comments I understand that all of us takes the old picture of the GT3 and apply it to the 992 GT3. I say, touring, Club Sport, and RS is no longer needed, we only need GT3 a track car.

I think you are confusing the GT3 for a GT3RS. The GT3 is not a race car. It is an extremely track capable street car that drives very well on the streets. It is for those that only have the opportunity to track their cars maybe a few times a year but want to enjoy the benefits of a high revving naturally aspirated manual transmission car throughout the year. And if owners want to make the interior more beautiful by adding deviated stitching and items of that nature, why hate on that? I’m a fan of your channel but this is a bad take. This review would apply very well to the GT3RS, but not the GT3

Well, the sad Swedish soundtrack finally fits the content. But, Janko why do you need such a ‘shoe fit’? The beauty is to feel such sophisticated technology. To enjoy what it is at any level. Not to necessarily flatter one’s driving skills. I own a 917 and drive it slowly around the track because I am not a fool. It is a ride in Apollo’s chariot. No need to impress the car, myself or anyone. I just enjoy the pure automotive genius. A pleasure which justifies itself. Come back to us!
@JankoLind
@JankoLind 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jerry, Well, the "shoe fit" is all about feeling the car. I understand that when you drive your 917, I could imagine (?) the feeling, not only the technology but also the history and legacy, just as I do driving a vintage 911. The 992 GT3 is like driving a BMW M3 until you engage a more active driving and the threshold is in hi-speed. I don't want to buy a 911 and only get the "Porsche thrill" when driving the car on a track. I don't want to be misunderstood, Jerry; 992 GT3 is a pure automotive genius but not on regular roads. Porsche runs through my veins, and I will come back, but I need some time to gather my thoughts. IF I regret not buying the 992 GT3 Touring, I most likely need your help/recommendation when I beg to get back my allocation. Thanks for following me and the time you spend on my channel.

The GT3 is overkill for most drivers in almost every situation.. At least for us, the Carrera S is the all around sweet spot in the Porsche lineup.. Just the right amount of power and it’s still offered with a manual transmission.. Keep up the good work! Greetings from northern Kentucky, USA.

Much respect here Janko, you are a deep thinker and clearly an experienced fast driver, however the 992GT3 isn't a race car, its actually good for "rolling in the street" and deleting carpet would be horrendous, this is not a race car rather it's a very capable road car which is excellent for occasional track use. I too don't have the shoes you mention however this GT3 is a perfect companion for an old guy such as me. I'm thinking Janko might you prefer an older 911? a really nice example and to make that car your own. very best wishes - Roger

100% agree with you.. a Singer would be mind blowing.. but also just kept the manual Spyder and get a PDK GT3, both for b-roads should cover all needs IMO. Also all the thing about taking a Touring to the race track doesn't make much sense to me. On the other hand if the Touring would have had the option of add rear seats would have made the absolute perfect b-road car (jus because of being able to share the experience with your kids)

I strongly disagree with you as expected Roger. Driving the 992 GT3 on regular roads is like driving an M3 with a noisier cabin. It is a true race car. The car is asleep under 150 km/h (93 miles/h) and then, wahoo, it wakes up :-) Not sure what I'm going for Roger, I might regret one day turning down the Touring but time will tell. I don't doubt you will enjoy your GT3 and congratulations on your car, but for me, today, it does not feel right. As always thank you for all the good videos you publish on KZbin.

That is so spot-on. I thought I might have been the only one who turned down an opportunity to spec a 992 GT3. Short story; shortly after taking delivery of my GT4 last August, I realized it might be all the car I could ever need. I may never be able to consistently drive it to the edge and back. Because every time I get close to where I think the edge is, it seems to move a little further out. The car has a soul. There is much work remaining for me in the GT4. What a great place to be.

Wow, you again managed to impress me with your opinion, Janko. A few months ago, I sold my 991 GT3 Touring with 20,000 km on the clock. For similar reasons: I felt I wasn’t filling the shoes with what I did with it: 5 % Autobahn, 5 % City, 90 % backroads, 0 % track. Rarely in a higher gear than fourth. A year ago I had added a 992 non-S, and it gives me a lot of fun on the B roads. Maybe more than the Touring, by now. Guess I’m getting old…

Thank you for yet another excellent and intelligent video. When cars get so fast that we can’t truly enjoy them at sensible speeds, their reason is lost for the enthusiast. Some of the most fun I’ve ever had driving a car, was in a lowly gen 1 MX-5. I wasn’t fast at all - but I had a blast! I feel that pretty much every modern car is “too good” to be properly fun for me on B roads - which is part of the reason why I, most likely, will be returning to motorcycles after a 20 year hiatus. The fact that my dream manual 997 GTS would be more than 10 times the cost of the bike I’m looking at doesn’t hurt either…
@JankoLind

You have a point but my taste will move towards the 996 GT3, the 997 is too heavy, in fact, a manual 992 Carrera S is 10 kg lighter than the 997 Carrera. The body is too heavy wish is applied to all 997. But I would consider a 997 as a daily.

But looking at your earlier content, perhaps this was in the stars? The 992 GT3 is hitting such high marks these days that the art is perhaps being lost? I am gradually building my pace with the 718 Spyder and very happy it is an open top that enhances all nuances. Perhaps this is the way forward with modern GT-Porsches? It’s so easy to get caught up in looks, wings, carbon etc when actually it’s all about the drive and how rewarding the drive can be in the right vehicle. Great video again Janko, and I totally understand what you're saying. I've often thought Porsche should revive the Club Sport package. They came close with the T but not done enough I think. I agree 350 bhp is more than enough for the road, and naturally aspirated too. A narrow bodied 911 with rear seat delete, bucket seats (non-carbon ones to keep the cost down), a short shift low ratio gearbox and an LSD with forged alloys and a suspension setup for B roads would be perfect. (Honestly, I think you need to try and 996 GT3 or maybe a 997.1 or 997.2 GT3.) I own a base 997.2, I've never felt it needed more power, I've never felt like I'm missing out. While I'd adore a 992 GT3 I know I'd barely tickle the cars ability. I know my license would be gone in no time at all as it's just too fast for the road.

I suspect a lot of those who are turning down allocations for the GT3 , both models, has more to do with the current state of the market and the super high ADM's. Most are just trying to justify that decision of saying they don't want it when they really do, but are doing the financially responsible thing and waiting this crazy bubble we are in. No shame in that, but call it as it is, and don't play head games with yourself.

One part is the technical improvement but also because it gives you much more confidence, and that increases the corner speed. On public roads, you hit jail speed, and I'm out, losing my marbles apparently. You need a track to experience the new 992 GT3 public roads is not good enuff. Here is how to gentrify a 992 GT3: 1. Get Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres(255/35r20 and 315/30r20 are avialable, check for local availability or order a few sets in) for less grip and more fun; equals lower speeds. 2. A manual transmission is .5 seconds slower 0-100kmh(4S tyres will make the GT3 Touring even slower, including slower to accelerate out of corners) and slightly slower when accelerating at higher speeds too because of manual shifting speeds are slower. Also according to EVO magazine the touring has a little bit more comfortable suspension tuning(mabye this equals less flat cornering so it feels like it's closer to it's limit or if not the 4S tyre's less stiff sidewall will give you that feeling).

Janko, a man who buys a car to suit his driving abilities (shoe fit) not for bragging or a quick profit. Respect! I remember James Hunt saying when he was young he drove an ordinary old British car to its limit and loved it. He didn't need massive power. His skills and limits of the car were a match. The race to increase HP these days is crazy and unnecessary.

Janko - very thoughtful video; you raise some very interesting questions. I understand what you mean about wanting to fill the shoes of the cars you own. I have a friend who owns a 991 GT2RS. He does probably ten time attack events a year with his car. It has shoes I could never hope to fill as a track machine. When I ride with him on B roads, it feels to me as if the car is wearing a choke collar - the roads so limit what the car can do. I own a 964 that I’ve had modified quite a bit, including shorter gear ratios, modern adjustable coil-overs (KW, Onix V2), stiffer sway bars, monoball bushings and a manual steering rack (from a 964 RS). My car is an absolute blast on B roads and is always nudging me to become a better driver (incrementally). I’ve also done occasional track days with it - it’s performance is more than enough for my level of skill. I can’t imagine myself driving the GT2 RS hard - it’s just too big a step in performance - I’d likely get myself killed.

The best 911 would be a 718 Spyder with a 911 badge. Since this is not possible the next best solution is two cars consisting of the 718 Spyder and the 911 Turbo S. It only took me four 911's and two Spyders to figure out the Porsche utopia formula. Now people get so fixated on the journey to find the perfect car they don't realize when they found it until they regret selling it. You did make this mistake in selling your Spyder. Get your 718 back and the 911 turbo and stop making videos about the fear of missing out and focus more the driving ones. The driving videos are what gets the subs instead of the 'I don't know what to do next' ones.

Totally agree Janko. I know my personal driving limits and a 992 S is “reasonable” for me. Likely more power than I will ever need and yes, my car may be “bored and yawning at times.” However it is safe for me and more importantly others around me on B roads or even a track. To own and push a GT3 would require hours of additional track instruction. Perhaps I could gain the skill and competency - but life is short with many priorities. It is an amazing vehicle (and I would love one) but overkill if you never regularly get it on to the track to fully exploit it. Most Porsche models are and that is why it is such an aspirational brand. Your points again are a great argument for the people to consider the amazing base 911, especially if you never plan to get on to the track. I will say...love the video, love the car! In my opinion this is overthought. Janko says this is a Race car and takes issue with the specifications for the road. The problem is that this is not strictly “the Race Car”. You can always go to Porsche and custom order a race car. You can pretty much order anything you want if you pay. The issue is this is THE ROAD CAR version, for the majority of the demographic that will want a race car experience FOR THE ROAD. Thereby putting as much race car bits in as possible, but also add Comfort items as well for those that want it. Lets be honest, NO ONE is going to drive a real RACE CAR on the street with plastic windows and no AC. “Passenger Seat delete”? Well I would imagine if you fear your own ability to not take a passenger when racing on the track, you can always take the seat out. Let not overthink this and get all bunched up in our outrage of what other people want in their cars. If I order a GT3, its because I love and respect is RACE ability and heritage, but I want to drive it on the street, take my wife and Daughter for rides, have some fun, and also have some creature comforts on top as there will be times I want to relax in the car as well. This is nothing different than competitors do, Ferrari, McLaren, whomever. In all those cases, if you really want a pure race car, then go to Porsche and tell them what you want and they will build one for you. Don’t get upset because there are options that exist for the 99 percentile of buyers of this ROAD car with RACE ability and heritage. That’s my 2 cents! But thanks for the video...and as always love the videos ...keep em coming!

It is a revelation against the 992. The car is so much more enjoyable than the 992 . For the first time in a very long time I am enjoying getting up early and going for a drive. The 992 with pdk was so accomplished but it’s simply too much for our uk roads. I can’t see the point in the new 992 GtS and I’m slightly bitter with Porsche that I can’t order a 992 GT3 but like you I would never get near it’s potential. Good points but don’t agree that it is a race car, GT3 is not a race car it is a fantastic street car capable on the track, What would be great is a rear seat option. 🥳 What you are talking about is a Cup car and that is available. Now I do agree if you are not ready for racing and just want to do track days with it then it would make sense to have the options to make it really light/raw. 👍 I think options for the owner to spec it in any direction is great😎. Do fully agree that many of the modern Porsches have to much grip in the corners, not just a GT3 issue, if you like to play with the rear end you have to go stupid fast. Now a narrow body 991.2 with Litchfield 600hp tune that both revs and have torque sounds very appealing in my book.

Janko GT 3's have always been track cars retuned for road use. I raced 996 GT 3 Cup and GT 3 997 Cup cars and my buddies did track days with their GT 3 road cars. At Sebring International the Cup cars were about 12 -15 seconds per lap faster . That shows there is a huge difference between the race car and the road car. No doubt that applies also to the 992 GT 3. When you feel not safe because you feel the car masters you rather than the other way around just leave it alone . However that doesn't mean you should turn your back to Porsche. On public roads you can't do anything fast anyway and certainly not in Sweden without getting into trouble with the law. U have a point concerning the GT3 even if I don’t agree. But I think the most interesting question is the new GTS model compared with the 992 S and 4 S versions. This new model is an evolution to these models and in a way it cannibalises a whole series of 992 models. A video comparing those will be very interesting.

It’s the GT3. It’s been the more civilized Porsche that you can still do track days but live with on a daily basis. The options you want would be more suited to an RS model. The GT3 RS is the track car that is barely legal for the street.

Respectfully, I think you have it all wrong Janko. The direction of Porsche on this model is brilliant. This is the age of “I want to have it all”. If you want a pure pure track car, the GT3 RS/GT2 RS is the ones to get. If you want to drive the car more track, some road -> GT3. If you want to drive the car some track, more road -> GT3 Touring. If you want the “Gentleman’s” ultimate sports car -> Turbo/Turbo S. You made it clear you don’t want track days, and you want just for the road -> Carrera S/Carrera GTS. The beautiful thing about Porsche is their brilliant model options. I’ve owned many 911’s and found the Carrera S/GTS quite boring compared to other sports cars I’ve owned. But Porsche GT cars are brilliant. Put a decent after market exhaust on the Turbo S and it’s a strong possibility for a car that does everything. When you accelerated in the GT3 to pass that car, THAT’S what I want. We cannot deny the smile that throaty exhaust puts on your face. My current daily driver is a 2021 Cayman GT4…..but I have my eyes on adding a GT3 Touring.

The "rules" you play I agree up to the 991.2. They are not valid anymore and please excuse me if I'm wrong, but you have not driven the 992 GT3. The Porsche 992 GT3 is one of a kind. It increases the corner speed by at least 50% in comparison to the 991.2. One part is the technical improvement but also because it gives you much more confidence, and that increases the corner speed. On public roads, you hit jail speed, and I'm out. You need a track to experience the new 992 GT3 public roads is not good enuff. In fact, the 992 GT3 is boring at slow speeds. Important, if you increases the corner speed by 50% why would you then decrease downforce by removing the rear wing on a Touring? If you are not already, please consider subscribing.

@@JankoLind all good points Janko, but respectfully, maybe you’ve changed. Maybe you’ve reached a stage where you just don’t crave the thrill, the screaming flat 6, the rawness of a GT car. That’s ok! You used the term “Gentleman’s car” many times. My local Porsche sales rep does too when he’s trying to explain differences to folks. Maybe a little more boring and a little more comfort is for you. My GT4 is more raw than the standard S or GTS and I love that. I have four other cars all with the latest comfy rides and gizmo’s and gadgets and even massage seats. I love that the GT4 is a proper sports car without all that nonsense.

And here is the question: do you have expierience with rear axle stabililizers upgrade. Why? I had this exp that after a few track days my rear axle started to squeak on a teansverso bumps. AD advised to mod this for some third party race elements. Can you advise?

A GT3 is not a race car, it’s a road car and a track toy. A race car is completely gutted, full roll cage, and suspension you can’t drive on a street.

Not sure about that rxhawk. I was wholloping plenty of gutted race cars on the track when driving my 991 GT3RS as were a few of my friends in their GT3's. We cannot forget that driver skill and death wish courage has a lot to do with what happens on the track ;-)

Good points janko. I would add is not only what you are not going to take advantage in the GT3, but what you will miss from an standard carrera or S. Taking out your kids and their friends? Going for a weekend with your partner with some luggage and lost roads, sun roof, just driving in the city without feeling awkward?… We are losing the pure joy of driving in this flex culture where more expensive, more powerful and more exclusive are kings

How are we losing the pure joy of driving in this “flex culture” when there are a myriad of options that fit your more docile preference in cars? More expensive, more powerful and more exclusive are only king if you care about that stuff which I have sneaking suspicion you do but because YOU can’t PLAY in those categories you shun anyone and any car who can. I may be wrong but I think kind of silly to say we’re losing the pure joy of driving when there plenty of cars out there that satisfy that requirement and they’re still being made. 🤷🏾‍♂️

Janko, i think you're overthinking this. Firstly, it's not a race car. It is an exotic supercar, and only a tiny percentage of owners will get its full performance. Secondly, just look at that beauty, that engine, that handling and quality. As a gentleman that can afford it, i just want it under my bum, wrapped in leather and deviating stitching. Simple.

I'm not embarrassed to admit that I'd be getting this car despite having a lot of the doubts and reservations that you have. I'm in love with the engine note and I realize fully that I'm not remotely the driver who can push this car to it's limits but that goes for a lot of the drivers of even sports sedans these days. Who is to say the guy with the E63S AMG is really driving faster than the guy with the E220D, my assumption is that they average quite similar speeds on b-roads and on the highway, the E63S driver gets there quite a bit quicker but at the end of the day, same chassis, same weight, same suspension geometry (or similar) so similar cornering speeds should be expected. In this sense, nothing wrong with buying the GT3 Touring in a manual and just enjoying the engine note at 8.5krpm in 3rd gear at 140km/h.

Not sure about the turbo being the solution to your "serious" Porsche case. Is ir really that different to 911S? Is the extra performance of the turbo really needed and at least a bit usable on the B road? Or are you after the feelings of imense power reserve that you would rarely tap into?

but 14:50 carrera s will never give you the joy while manual shifting between 4-9 rpm. That is for me buying point when it comes to GT3. None of other 911 have that. For example, I would never buy turbo with that terrible washing machine noise.

Totally agree Janko. Well said man. The GT series IS too powerful and geared to high for daily driving. Would I want one just to have it and stare at it-- yes! But my 992 C4S with PDK just had NO joy. It was soul-less. I LOVE the interior and the beauty of the 992. But the way the motors and turbos are now. You have to truly work to find a road you can even enjoy it on. A C2S with a stick is truly one of the best ways to enjoy a modern Carrera. Just my opinion. Cheers.

Dammit guys we asked for a more aggressive GT3 and I also wanted the Turbo to be more aggressive in all categories as well. Porsche responded and gave us the new front suspension and a more “racier” front end. Which is what we wanted! When the 991.1 GT3 came out they said it was too soft and not as much of a race car as the 997.2 (which I would agree except the 991.2 RS is a beast). So let’s enjoy this more purposeful GT3 and Touring. Because the RS is coming and it’s not going to be giving anything up. So my question to you all, my Porsche family is. Are you sure you are GT drivers or not? No disrespect, but once you go past the GTS the rabbit hole gets real deep and very, very racy. Not for everyone but the good news is they make a version of the 911 for all of us!🇩🇪

Thank you Janko - excellent philosophy - I agree. We should buy the car that suits our personality and purpose. "Fast cars go in a straight line. Fast drivers go around corners" I bought the GT3RS to track it regularly which I have done until recently. Now I have a more sedate white 718 GT4 on order which I will mainly B road and occasionally track (if I get permission from my family). Below my note to Antony Lacroix FYI : The only Porsche I've ever owned was a 991 GT3RS and it was without question the best car that I have ever owned or driven. It unfortunately died during a major incident on a wet track - I survived. I now have a 718 GT4 on the way which I hope will satisfy my urge to drive another Porsche. She who must be obeyed stipulated that I wasn't to buy another "Racing Porsche". It is my hope that a Carrera White GT4 with no decals and sports buckets meets that stipulation :) I also anticipate that it will be a grand driving experience. Thanks for your comment AL - cheers.

Respect your take on the GT3 Janko. But I think the beauty of the 911 is there is something for everyone. There's the perfect car and spec for a gentlemen, bad boy, you name it. Also there is no way for newer cars to simply replicate the essence of older versions. Too many reasons it can't be done. For that, you may need to look at other car manufacturers such as Lotus.

I see the 992 GT3 as a 3RS with less aero and it seems like it lost the Touring side of it due to high stiffness in suspension. I also see it as a missed opportunity from Porsche to distinguish between the GT3 and GT3 Touring, i believe Touring should have had a softer designed front end and slightly softer suspension. The 992 GT3 doesn’t have the steerable character as 991.2 GT3s from what I’m seeing. I’d rather go for the bonkers 992 3RS as it will have more aero to match that race car suspension with no compromises.

at 500 hp the gt3 is significantly underpowered compared to other cars that are putting up similar lap times, maybe you’re just a timid driver? it’s certainly possible to get closer to the cars limits on open backroads...there’s a fun factor of a car being more capable then you can handle...that never ending process of taming the beast is an addictive learning experience.

I'm not sure about your comment. HP or not, the corner speed is what's scares me on public roads. It's simply too fast for them. You need a track to experience the new 992 GT3.
