This is how I started my smart home journey, we were renting while we built. Pop a few devices around to play with, work out what worked/didn't work for us, so by the time we moved in, I was armed with knowledge (and a credit card 🤣). One of my favourite portable devices is the RM4 (Pro if needed), so you can control IR/RF. We had IR remotes for the AC/heater, so I combined it with a temperature sensor to automate the climate control without having to touch the unit.

That's pretty much the bones of my home setup :D I found that if you're sticking things to a door or wall, instead of removing all of the protective tape from the sticky pad, only remove 1/4 and it's enough to hold it, but it's low tac enough to make it easy to remove. If you need to use it, but it's losing some of its tac, then remove more of the protective tape. One thing you didn't mention is that HomeAssitant only connects to 1 server at a time so you can't monitor alerts form your home and Air BnB at the same time. Setting up and enabling SMS from home would help with urgent notifications (flood etc) so you can switch back, but it's a shame HA still can't connect multiple instances at the same time

I would dispute the 'reliability' of the door and window sensors, unless they've changed recently but they are absolutely impossible to get working for some people like myself. Going through the forums shows that even with the same setup it works great for some people, and straight up doesn't work for others seemingly at random, I've got three that have just been sitting in their boxes for years because they won't stay connected for more than a few minutes
@EverythingSmartHome2 жыл бұрын
Have you checked to see if there is updated firmware for them? I have around 15 of them in my own house and never experienced that personally. I have with the TVOC when it was first released where it would drop off every few days but a firmware update fixed that - might be worth a shot!

@@EverythingSmartHome It's possible I suppose, there wasn't when I was using Z2M but it's been a while. A pre-configured HA Yellow with Nabu Casa subscription (next year when anyone can buy one - maybe) and a few sensors and a camera, would be GREAT peace of mind for even short vacations. Just plug it in to the router, quickly put the sensors where you want them, and while you're out enjoying the sights, get instantly notified of any funny business is going on inside your rental room/house. Could be as simple as 1 door sensor and a camera. Maybe one motion sensor or two in addition. Definitely no lights or outlets for vacation use.
