This has to be my favorite collaboration I've seen yet, all the tomato reactions were priceless! In regards to using tomato as fuel, you'd probably have a bit more luck nitrating the powdered tomato and then mixing the nitrated tomato with another oxidizer (nitrates are good, but chlorates and perchlorates might work better) to help burn any unreacted residue. That's just my thoughts anyway; loved the video! And... Tomatoes are disgusting! ...(unless their corpses are mashed into a pulp, mixed with seasoning, and used as pizza sauce, then they are mildly endurable).

Is it though? Not a chemist, but I think this is actually kinda stupid. 1) "accidental spills" would get neutralized anyway - it's a couple of drops of acid into liters of water 2) I feel like in a case of emergency or if the beaker breaks, dumping acid into fresh water and then neutralizing it slowly would be much safer than dumping it into a strong base and neutralizing it immediately. I mean wouldn't that create some very high temperatures that might vaporize the liquid instantly and splash a bunch of unreacted acid on your face - or worse, might detonate the explosive you were probably making? I've never heard of anyone making their ice water bath basic when nitrating stuff, so I gotta ask... Are you an actual chemist or is this something you just came up with based on no experience in chemistry whatsoever and decided to call it a good idea, while possibly killing someone who tries it?

In theory... You could, but it would take a LOT of tomatoes. You'd have to separate the pure cellulose, then treat it with acetic acid, then again with acetic anhydride and catalyzed by sulfuric acid. That would give you cellulose triacetate, which is a bioplastic with some higher temp thermoplastic properties but requires some more expensive solvents to work with. However, if the triacetate is treated with water it can be hydrolized into cellulose diacetate, which has lower working temps and can be dissolved in acetone and spun into a fiber. So you might be able to spin a filament out of it and successfully run it through a 3d printer....maybe.

I'd suggest a 2nd nitration, this time at room temperature (no runaway will happen since it is already nitrated), this allows the nitric acid to fully nitrate it as after 1 nitration it usually is only dinitrocellulose and not the trinitro form you want which burns much mush quicker.

It spins and generates a lot of force ). You can make something like that but definitely on a much smaller scale. Project will use your 3d printed rocket and it can basically yeet everything you think about. You can make it to launch for example the tomatos far away from you. For release mechanism use for example just a rubber band at a place where it's meant to go out of box the thing that is being launched will fall out by itself. And good work getting to 500k🥳

Perhaps, you could build the multi-stage rocket engine, using previously tested/created fuels. You could even use 3D printed nozzles and interconnects for the different stages.
@thecoldknight79803 жыл бұрын
A proper rocket engine is far to complex to build even one rocket engine. He might be able to make a electric turbo pump fed pintle injector engine. It would have to use kerosene and nitros oxide or something else to produce lower heats then the standard Rp1 Lox engine as he would most likely need active cooling due to the lack of turbo pump exhaust.

Video idea: Use the tomatoes from this video and make them in powder form. Then maybe you can convert the powder into a rocket engine and strap it to an rc car or bonus points for an rc plane. 2:10 The reason why the tomatoes probably weren’t drying was because the oven acted more like a steamer than an oven, which would release water in a steam form. However, when it cools down, the water goes back into the tomato paste. Also, I think your first test with dry tomatoes and such didn’t work because the dry tomatoes still had water.
@MatrixRay193 жыл бұрын
First you used the sugar on the tomatoes to make fuel, on the second attempt you decided to use the cellulose and nitrate it to get the fuel, however none of them worked as good as expected, why? well, because you were only focusing on one component at a time and the rest were obstacles per say. So, we have 3 main components on a tomato: 1. Water 2. Sugar 3. Cellulose ~4. Disgustingness~ Water is just a no-go for fuel so we'd still need the tomatoes to be dehydrated/dried, the point here would be to both make the sugar fuel as well as nitrate the cellulose on the mix. I'd also like to point out that it is common to caramelize the sugar fuel to get rid of moisture and just to make it solid. If we combine all I've said here, I think it would be possible to make a reasonably powerful fuel. I don't know the best order of processes nor the safest one, but we aren't here for the safety aspect :P

@@ultragames007 i think since the nitrated tomatos made terrible rocket propellant he should revisit this, and use the sugar he separated to make sugar rockets... Tomatos will still be terrible, but they will be less terrible as sugar rockets i think...

VIDEO IDEA: Since you have a lot of empty Co2 cartridges why don't you use as a tank for solid rocket fuel (for example the sugar one). With cartridges you can get a nozzle simply by going to countersink the hole. The divergent part will be missing, you could perhaps weld, on the outlet of the cartridge, a bolt or any suitable piece of metal and then countersink for make the divergent part of the nozzle.

@Integza Congrats on surpassing your goal of subscribed folks. I too am not a fan of uncooked tomatoes. Your videos are great. I truly enjoy watching and as a "less educated nerd" I appreciate that your content is made so I can learn and take something away. Bravo sir.

Hey Integza, I just recently found out how flammable popped popcorn is. Maybe you can use that as fuel?

video idea: perfect your tomato nitration and grind them to a fine powder. use the fine powder to proppel fireworks for upcoming new year celebration or just make firecrackers out of it and see how much bang you get! Congrats on your 500k!

Actually I never thought about where you were from much because despite the obvious accent, your grammar is perfect in a way that 90% of non-native English speakers miss, so there is never any confusion of words that reminds me of it.

I think you should test different rocket nozzles (and maybe propellants) under different pressures, showing aerospike's main feature. I've heard you can get lower than atmospheric pressure by partially submerging a bottle with an attached pipe into water and then lifting the bottle, while keeping the other pipe end stay underwater.

It's all been culminating into this final moment .. I knew you were going to use the tomatoes as rocket fuel one day, the only logical choice here 😂😂 EDIT: I showed this to my kids, and just noticed the silent night music in the section where you're blending the dried tomatoes... :D

I know i'm a bit late but you can make a powder with your dried sugar-free tomato , nitrate it and then filter it with just a funnel with a cottonball at the bottom so just the solution passes and your nitrated powder stays. This should give you a better nitration therefore a better burning rate.

Congratulations Integza! 🎊 can we have more collaborative videos in the future? This was great 👍 Might I suggest the project be a electromagnetic sled tomato railgun, or a centrifugal spin launcher to hurl tomatoes into space (or just the neighbor's backyard as a prototype), to highlight other ideas of space propulsion? Keep up the great work!

I remember when I was studying chemistry. I could just go to the pharmacy and buy concentrated sulfuric and concentrated nitric acid. And I made lots of flash cotton. I think I used a 2:1 mix of the acids, though. But I can't remember which one I used more of. But I'd say that since you got burned from igniting it in your hand, that implies that your nitration was not complete. Several times I put flash cotton inside an open fist, and burned it there. Just make sure you don't close your fist, or you might end up with fewer fingers than you started with.
