ഇടുക്കി അണക്കെട്ടിന്റെ ‌ചരിത്രം പറയുമ്പോൾ ഒരിക്കലും മറക്കാൻ പാടില്ലാത്ത പേരാണ്, കരുവെള്ളയാൻ കൊലുമ്പൻ എന്ന ആദിവാസി മൂപ്പന്റെ പേര്. ഇടുക്കി അണക്കെട്ടിന് സ്ഥാനം കാണിച്ചുകൊടുത്ത ആളായിട്ടാണ് കൊലുമ്പനെ ചരിത്രം ആദരിക്കുന്നത്. കൊലുമ്പനോടുള്ള ആദരസൂചകമായി അണക്കെട്ടിന്റെ കവാടത്തിൽ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ പ്രതിമ സ്ഥാപിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.
Chemban Kolumban, the Adivasi leader who discovered the site of the Idukki dam, is finally being remembered by the authorities with the renovation of the Kolumban Park, close to the Cheruthoni dam of the Idukki Hydroelectric project here.

ഇടുക്കി ഡാമിന്റെ ചരിത്രം!!! ആദ്യഘട്ടത്തിൽ 15000 തൊഴിലാളികൾ ജോലിചെയ്‌ത പദ്ധതി നിർമ്മാണത്തിനിടയിൽ 85 പേർ അപകടത്തിലും മറ്റും പെട്ട്‌ മരണമടഞ്ഞു. 1932 ൽ മലങ്കര എസ്റ്റേറ്റ്‌ സൂപ്രണ്ടായിരുന്ന ഡബ്ല്യൂ. ജെ. ജോൺ ഇടുക്കിയിലെ ഘോരവനങ്ങളിൽ നായാട്ടിന്‌ എത്തിയതോടെയാണ്‌ ഇടുക്കിയെ കണ്ടെത്തുന്നത്‌. നായാട്ടിനിടയിൽ കൊലുമ്പൻ എന്ന ആദിവാസിയെ കണ്ടുമുട്ടി. തുടർന്നുള്ള യാത്രയ്ക്ക്‌ വഴികാട്ടിയായി കൊലുമ്പനെ കൂട്ടി. കൊലുമ്പൻ കുറവൻ കുറത്തി മലയിടുക്ക്‌ കാണിച്ചുകൊടുത്തു. മലകൾക്കിടയിലൂടെ ഒഴുകിയ പെരിയാർ ജോണിനെ ആകർഷിച്ചു. ഇവിടെ അണകെട്ടിയാൽ വൈദ്യുതോല്‌പാദനത്തിനും ജലസേചനത്തിനും പ്രയോജനപ്പെടുമെന്ന്‌ ജോണിനുതോന്നി. പിന്നീട്‌ ജോൺ എൻജിനിയറായ സഹോദരന്റെ സഹായത്തോടെ അണക്കെട്ടിന്റെ സാധ്യതകളെക്കുറിച്ച്‌ തിരുവിതാംകൂർ ഗവൺമെന്റിന്‌ റിപ്പോർട്ട്‌ സമർപ്പിച്ചു. 1937 ൽ ഇറ്റലിക്കാരായ അഞ്ജമോ ഒമേദയോ, ക്‌ളാന്തയോ മാസലെ എന്ന എൻജിനിയർമാർ അണക്കെട്ട്‌ പണിയുന്നതിന്‌ അനുകൂലമായി പഠനറിപ്പോർട്ട്‌ സമർപ്പിച്ചെങ്കിലും സർക്കാർ തയ്യാറായില്ല. പെരിയാറിനെയും, ചെറുതോണിയെയും ബന്‌ധിപ്പിച്ച്‌ അണക്കെട്ട്‌ നിർമ്മിക്കാൻ വിവിധ പഠന റിപ്പോർട്ടുകളിൽ ശുപാർശകളുണ്ടായി. കേന്ദ്ര ജലവൈദ്യുത കമ്മിഷനുവേണ്ടിയും സമഗ്രമായ പഠനങ്ങൾ നടത്തിയിരുന്നു. 1961-ൽ ആണ്‌ അണക്കെട്ടിനായി രൂപകല്‌പന തയ്യാറാക്കിയത്‌. 1963 ൽ പദ്ധതിക്ക്‌ കേന്ദ്ര ആസൂത്രണ കമ്മിഷന്റെ അംഗീകാരം കിട്ടി. നിർമ്മാണച്ചുമതല സംസ്ഥാന വൈദ്യുതി ബോർഡ്‌ ഏറ്റെടുത്തു. 1969 ഏപ്രില്‍ 30-നാണ് നീണ്ടനാളത്തെ ആലോചനകള്‍ക്കും പഠനങ്ങള്‍ക്കുംശേഷം അന്നത്തെ മുഖ്യമന്ത്രിയായിരുന്ന ഇ.എം.എസ് പദ്ധതിയുടെ നിര്‍മാണോദ്ഘാടനം നിര്‍വഹിച്ചത്. പദ്ധതിയുടെ പ്രധാന അണക്കെട്ട്‌ കുറവൻ മലയേയും, കുറത്തി മലയേയും ബന്‌ധിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. ഇതുമൂലം പെരിയാറിൽ സംഭരിക്കുന്ന വെള്ളം ചെറുതോണിപ്പുഴയിലൂടെ ഒഴുകി പോകാതിരിക്കാൻ ചെറുതോണിയിലും, ഇതിനടുത്തുള്ള കിളിവള്ളിത്തോട്ടിലൂടെ വെള്ളം നഷ്‌ടപ്പെടാതിരിക്കാൻ കുളമാവിലും അണക്കെട്ടുകൾ നിർമ്മിച്ചു. ഇടുക്കി ഡാം ഇന്നും വിസ്‌മയമാണ്‌. പാറയിടുക്കിന്റെ സാന്നിധ്യവും മർദ്ദവും ശക്തിയുമെല്ലാം താങ്ങാൻ കഴിവുള്ള അണക്കെട്ട്‌ കമാനാകൃതിയിലാണ്‌ നിർമ്മിച്ചത്‌. കോൺക്രീറ്റ്‌ കൊണ്ടു പണിത ഈ ആർച്ച്‌ ഡാമിനു 168.9 മീറ്റർ ഉയരമുണ്ട്‌. മുകളിൽ 365.85 മീറ്റർ നീളവും 7.62 മീറ്റർ വീതിയും. അടിയിലെ വീതി 19.81 മീറ്ററാണ്‌. ഇടുക്കി അണക്കെട്ടിന്‌ ഷട്ടറുകളില്ല എന്നതാണൊരു പ്രത്യേകത. IS 456-2000 അനുസരിച്ചുള്ള എം - 40 കോൺക്രീറ്റ് മിശ്രിതമാണ് ഇടുക്കി ആർച്ച് ഡാം നിർമാണത്തിൽ ഉപയോഗിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. കോൺക്രീറ്റ് മിശ്രിതം തയ്യാറാക്കുമ്പോഴത്തെ താപനില കുറയ്ക്കുന്നതിനായി ഐസ് ഉപയോഗിച്ചിരുന്നു. രാജ്യത്തെ ഏറ്റവും ശക്തമായ അണക്കെട്ടുകളിലൊന്നായ ഇടുക്കി അണക്കെട്ട് ഭൂകമ്പത്തെ പ്രതിരോധിക്കത്തക്കവിധത്തിൽപ്രത്യേക ഡിസൈനോടെയാണ് പണികഴിപ്പിച്ചിട്ടുള്ളത്.... 1976 ഫെബ്രുവരി 12-ന് പ്രധാനമന്ത്രിയായിരുന്ന ഇന്ദിരാഗാന്ധി നാടിനു സമര്‍പ്പിച്ചു.

നമ്മൾ അവശയപ്പെട്ടെങ്കിലും അവർ അധികം വെള്ളം കൊണ്ടുപോകാൻ ആദ്യം തയാറായില്ല എന്നാണ് പത്രത്തിൽ വാഴിച്ചത്. മുല്ലപ്പെരിയാറിന്റെ ജലനിരപ്പ് 242 വരെ എത്തിക്കാനുള്ള ശ്രമത്തിന്റെ ഭാഗമായാണിത്. പക്ഷെ ഇപ്പോൾ വെള്ളം കൊണ്ടുപോകുന്നതിന് അളവ് അവർ കൂട്ടിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. ഞാൻ മനോരമ ഓൺലൈനിൽ പലപ്പോഴായി വാഴിച്ച വാർത്തകളിൽ നിന്നും അറിഞ്ഞതാണ്, തെറ്റുണ്ടെകിൽ ക്ഷമിക്കണം.

Ronneyrocks Ray simply i will explain..,On this video its described about the history about Idukki dam...there is one story behind the building...Near to that dam area there is one estate Malankara estate...it is the property of one British person mr Thomas Ertati..one day he just went for hunting through the deep forest ,while his traveling he become friendship with one Mayor of Tribes..his name is Kolumban...he well knwn about all that area...he explained all details about that forest and the river "periyar"....so mr Thomas shows his interest on it and he made an effort and his knowledge with the help of his brother to build a dam between two mountains.&through the dam will get the electricity for Kerala ...that time kerala is called as Travancore...he submitted to Authorities of Travancore govt..but they disapproved it...atlast around 1967 it was inaugurated by smt Indira Gandi for the first Asian Arch dam....and there is underground powerplant too..dam is connected with two mountains one is Kurathimala(kurathi means tribal girl or lady.;Mala means mountains or big rocks) and anotherside is kuravan...it is longest rock...(its situated as an image of Male tribes).,,,both of them are lovers..,bcz of some deeds they r become rocks according to Mythology...related to Hindhu believes.,around 1500 employers worked hardly behind the dam building and around 85 persons died in different times during the time..For kolumban remembrance & respect they built one statue of Kolumban.., every festival time of Onam..,Electricity board allow the visitors here ..,
