Yeah that's about around the clock speed for the base model PS4/X1/ and if the rumors are true, the Switch as well. So I suppose it's no surprise these did a lot better then some of us expected performance wise. Ivan, PS4's is actually around 1.2 GHz as well. It's the GDDR5 ram and the slightly better GPU that edge it out above the X1.

It actually wouldn't vary much. Minecraft doesn't multi thread very well (except the W10 version of it). Java also has some serious bottlenecks limiting how fast the game can run. Meaning it's ability to efficiently use hardware is not-so-good to say the least. What I'm getting at is- the point where your hardware is powerful enough to play Minecraft VS how powerful it has to be to "max" it, is a very small window with a quick diminishing returns on performance after you reach recommended spec, and that's why it makes for a very bad benchmark- because it scales poorly.

Your honestly a man after my own heart Salazar. Personally what I like to do is build gaming PC's that specifically match the tech specs of game consoles. Reason being is because that's all developers seem to care about nowadays and I refuse to pay a fee to play online. So I build relatively inexpensive PC's to match the performance of consoles and I've had a lot of success doing it that way. The PS4 Pro is currently the most powerful console with a 2.1 GHz 8 core processor for a total processing power of 16800 MHz. All I do is make sure my CPU has a total processing power of at least 16800 MHz and that my video card matches the GPU specs of the PS4 Pro followed by how much RAM the system has. By following those steps I've never had an issue with any game and I run everything on Windows 7. A lot of PC gamers take everything to such an extreme and it's pointless because few things are optimized for it. So it's basically a waste of money in a lot of ways.

Not relevant to the video but I recently overclocked a friends FX 6300 but could only get it to 4GHz. I tried up to 1.4v for 4.2ghz but even that didn't work. I've gotten my 6350 with the same motherboard model to 4.6 and haven't tried higher so I think I'm doing everything right. If i wanted a perfectly silent PC with "OK" framerates (60fps) and reasonable temps, what is the lowest usable speeds for the case, radiator and GPU fans. I'm aware milage will vary depending on setup and cooling systems and even games played, but there has to be a way to correlate fan speeds and noise to clock speeds.

underclocking is relevant for hpc, since the main cost is powerdraw, and u can get to an optimum with lower clock speeds for some problems.

nope, i highly suggest an i5/i7 or upcoming Ryzen. Dual cores suffer in gta5, especially maxed shadows/reflections/distance

ok so im planning on buying a rx 480 for my intel pentium . can i overclock it and run crysis 3 on more than 30 fps with ultra settings and 4k resolution? im planning to game on my new gaming rig for 24/7 but my cooler fan broke so can i use an electric fan instead?

if you're planning to buy a 480 just buy a cpu-fan for the love of god. "HIGH STATIC PRESSURE" or short "HSP" Fans. And no, Crysis will bring your pentium on its knees.

that was a really cool experiment. I am now wondering whether if you took an old chip set (same speed as the under clocked) and ran it side by side to the 4.5 ghz chip would it yield the same results?

man underclocks card to 1/4 speed ... resultant performance 25% of normal. mind blown.

Nice experiment. Thank you. It is nice to see, how strong today´s CPU´s really are. Underclocked at 1,2 GHz most of the games are still playable at 1080p (!). Not very good, but the underclocked CPU still does the job. And 1,2 GHz is ridiculous low.

Good video. I too, wanted to know the result of a low clock speed in comparisons to a high clock speed, bonus for being a 6-core processor though! This is great for a processor like the xeon E5-2650L because it is a high core count CPU with 14 cores, but only gets around 2.1 GHz max if all cores are active. Would be interesting if you tested in 500 MHz or 1 GHz frequencies (1 GHz, 2 GHz, 3 GHz, 4 GHz, maybe 5 GHz) to see if the percentage difference increases, decreases, or is linear with the increase in CPU frequencies. This will provide data for the minimum frequency for a consumer when buying a processor for games and work.

Hey Salazar Studio, I've been hearing mixed reviews on the DeepCool Captain 240EX. People are complaining about leaks and pump failures in the 1st week. It would be nice to see a video with your thoughts on the product now that it's in Heisenberg.

What was the single core score on Cinebench? I'd like to see how the single core performance has changed since 1.2GHz days. Cinebench isn't quite the right tool for that, but we all know the scale. Any other synthetics would be appreciated. Anything we may be able to measure against an Athlon or PIII.

I feel like you missed some major questions. Did the underclock allow the computer to run at a lower power consumption for one. Of course you would not underclock for gaming purposes but what about trying to turn your old rig into a power efficient linux server. Something that handles light requests like a home built NAS or a VOIP server.

I have the same Cpu, and I under-clocked it to 2.6Ghz and disabled 2 cores, and tested a bunch of stuff. I wanted to see how the average laptop would fair in cpu performance. Haswell/Haswell-E is still rock solid and even 2.6 will power games perfectly fine, it was never the difference between 60fps and not 60fps, tho it did hold me back on the high end quite a bit. Max frame rates were bad and avg fps was down about 25%, not too bad. I always worry game developers will look at high end and not consider those with avg Cpu's, or especially gamers using gaming laptops, where Cpu performance is often halved compared to a comparable PC.

i built once a PC for 3D rendering, i don't remember the specs but i think it was some 3.6GHz amd quadcore cpu. The only thing i remember that that fan was incredibly noisy under load. I didn't bother myself to change the fan, i just limited to the lowest frequency from power management, that was like 0.9 ghz and it was completely silent and still very fine for everyday tasks. When it was needed for rendering, just set to high power profile and... it sounded like an airplane taking off
@spencerwaters59627 жыл бұрын
I've done the same thing with my fx-8350. I clocked it down to about the same, 1.2 or so. The other thing I had some fun with was turning on only one core per module. Not sure if you have a motherboard that can do that but my gigabyte had the option for one core per compute unit and I actually got better single threaded scores in my cpumark tests.
@kuksio927 жыл бұрын
Just a tip, try to find the biggest core clock speed at this voltage and check the power consumption and temps and make another video with comparison. I once underclocked 4790k on asus z97ar motherboard to 3.0 ghz at about 0.8V and paired with one gtx 980 i had stable gameplay in witcher 3, above 60 fps in novigrad (ofc not ultra max settings/FHD) with gpu bottlenecked. Temps were about 38-40 celsius (dark rock pro 3) and power consumption was about 3 times lower (about 40-50 watts). So, there is some use for underclocking if you dont push your games on uncapped fps, but keep cap at 60 or so.
