I use an EX-G Pro. Wish they made the Huge in a thumb form factor because my hands are pretty big. Can confirm that swapping the included ruby bearings to some high grade silicon nitride ceramic made mine MUCH better for fine movements. The included bearings had very high stiction that made tiny movements impossible, which the ceramic solved. I recommend using a piece of sticky tape to keep hold of the bearings during installation instead of free handing it though: being ultra hard and ultra smooth means something the size of a seed that bounces like mad and is actively trying to squirt out of your fingers (you will never find it again). The EX-G Pro uses 2.5mm sized bearings.

I absolutely love my HUGE Balls. I have both the wireless and wired versions and I use them on a Linux laptop. I would definitely recommend either. For the wireless one, a form fitting case ( Hermit Shell Brand ) is a must to both protect the device and make sure the USB BT receiver does not fall out during transport.

There is another type of trackball than those you mentioned and that is the classic style of trackballs that were designed to be used with the palm and usually have the buttons surrounding it on all sides. That is the type that helped me most when I got a rather severe RSI during my IT training that wasn't healing because of a unknown side effect of a medication I have to take. Loved them for most things ever since. Also how I learned how good an IBM Model M keyboards were. Another popular option for replacing the berrings is Zirconium Oxide which can give you an almost free roll reduction in friction.

I have used Logitech trackball since beginning of the 2000. First wired one (with a almost 2 meter cable), then M570 and now MX Ergo. Change to M570 to MX Ergo were purely due ergonomics as it has some adjustment available on tilt. All old trackballs still works, even that early 2000 trackball (Logitech Trackman Wheel Optical).
@supertrexandroidx2 жыл бұрын
I wish I could say the same, The very first 570 I got lasted years, but since then I've been through several more and an Ergo. The left mouse button keeps going on them, not always working when pressed, even when just continually holding down in certain games. Need to find a good alternative, so thinking about the Ex-G Pro. I don't know if I could get used to a finger trackball, I can't imagine it would be easier to control for small movements - but it might just be a case of what you're used to.

I switched to Trackballs in 1994 for much the same reasons. I had to place my arm on a pillow to keep working (this was in college). I did not want to deal with carpal tunnel syndrome, so I bought a Logitech TrackMan II. I can count the amount of time I've used a mouse since then in hours. I've tried finger operated trackballs but never found the same level of accuracy as the thumb operated ones. A couple years ago I banged up my wrist and picked up an Elecom left handed wireless trackball to try out. It is very good, except for the receiver, which does like being on it's own. I used a USB 2 extension cable with it and the problem went away. The Elecom software is a little crude compared to Logitech, but it worked well enough. Currently using the MX Ergo Plus and Ergo M575.

For anyone taking engineering in college, I think the elecom huge wireless is a must. Of course it should be mentioned all the benefits of a trackball mouse for ergonomics (especially with marble scroll downloaded), but it is the superior mouse for portable use. I can sit on a stool with my laptop on my lap and the huge laying sideways on my stomach and use it perfectly. You absolutely may be able to get by in CS with a touchpad, but for most engineers, we will encounter some sort of 3d modeling software whether it be fusion or solidworks. It is integral to be able to use the right click, left click, and middle click while moving the mouse for most of these programs. This type of mouse allows for that while also not requiring a flat surface. Additionally, the trackball allows for an incredibly intuitive rotate view function as you can physically rotate your ball as an analogue of your model, I'd rate it above a space mouse even.
@danieldsouza38293 жыл бұрын
I purchased Elecom's Deft Pro trackball a few months ago; It was somewhat expensive, but is worth it to me for the ergonomic improvement. I only have two gripes, one is that you cannot use the DPI button without flipping over the trackball. The second is that even after breaking in the trackball, the stock "ruby" bearings would stick, making small, precise movements frustrating. Thankfully I had bought the recommended replacement bearings. Actually replacing the bearings was tough. I had to disassemble the entire trackball to get at the housing, and there are delicate ribbon cables inside the trackball. But the result was worth it, and it is great for work or playing my space simulators!

I go through a lot of trackballs, and they all fail for the same reason - the left-click microswitch wears out. My latest purchases have been the huge and the deft pro. The deft pro has now reached the point of failure, so my usage is on the huge. I decided I would try fixing the problem on the deft pro, either by cleaning the microswitch or replacing it. Sadly, I was defeated in my attempts to open it, so I could not get to the microswitch. I will be interested in how I get on with the huge when the time comes. I replaced the ball bearings on the huge as described, and wish I had not bothered. I found the process very difficult, and cannot detect any improvement. I have tried just about every other make and model of finger trackballs (I cannot get on with thumb operated trackballs at all). The elecoms seem to compare favourably to them all.
@fastestoneliner Жыл бұрын
I have two of these. I don't like where the left click is and I use the R instead. Then Fn3 for the right click. The scroll wheel would be more ergonomic if it was turn 90deg as the thumb has an easier time going up and down than having to bend to scroll. You can program the buttons where you want, yet in windows sometimes there's a lag when the overrides kick in when signing back in. Both ones I had, it didn't sit level on the desk, there was some rocking. I removed one of the grip pads and that solves that issue. I'm going to try the bearing change. I do notice the ball being a little sticky, I got used to it. This mouse has solved my mouse issue I had with PCs. Because you can give another finger clicking duty. Thumb trackballs for me were a backwards step because the thumb had to do all the moving and still the pointer finger is clicking. I'd love to be able to firmware set the button assignment, so I can plug into any PC and use the default mouse settings.

When I purchased my first computer in the early 90's, I got it with a keyboard that had an integral track ball where the directional keys are on a typical keyboard. This was a thumb ball with the keys above the num-pad serving as the mouse buttons. Time warp to today and I have a Logitech MX Ergo Plus at my right hand. Because most of the movement is done by the thumb my wrist doesn't have to move at all. The MX updates the older Trackman by adding more buttons, including a half speed button for the ball for times when you need very fine movement, as well as a multi-angle tilt plate that takes even more stress off your forearm and wrist. Since I do a lot of work in the field, another big advantage is not having to have a flat surface for a traditional mouse. It also features 2 bluetooth channels so ch 1 is connected to my primary laptop while ch 2 is linked to my Surface Pro for when I have both systems running.

I purchased a pre-made Ploopy Classic trackball about three months ago and it is very impressive. Of all he many trackballs I have used over the decades (and I have a shelf-full), I can say it is now my daily driver. XMouse software allows customize every aspect of its behavior by application. XMouse is app-aware and switches functionality without the need for intervention. One nice thing XMouse allows is the use of the big trackball for scrolling...very useful for web browsing. I also run RawAccel at startup and created a very useful acceleration profile giving very high precision cursor movements when moving slowly yet still allows me to throw the cursor all the way across two 4k monitors in one toss. I like its operation over my Elecom trackballs mainly due to the instrument-grade bearings and the overall ergos...there is absolutely zero stiction and very low friction. Just wanted to throw that out there for everyone who has been searching for years for a great trackball only to find mediocrity in the marketplace.

I'm a currently user of the Elecom Deft Pro for about 1 year and 2 months and I should had changed it earlier that I've done. My reasons were exactly the same as Jeff with a difference - Pain in the wrists from 8 hours work in front of a PC plus some more at home and also a disease I have that attacks the joints of my bones - Psoriatic arthritis. That's the reason why I choose the index one instead of a thumb one, my thumb suffers from prolonged movements of the cursor, while with the index one it just clicks in a button or moves front to back, not always moving in all directions. I only have 2 gripes with the Deft Pro: The software consumes too much CPU resources in the background (between 5% to 10% CPU on a Dual Core Intel i7 6500U) and the printing of the buttons and body goes away very fast, like in less of 4 months it started to fade. It should be laser engraved instead of pad printing or etched in the plastic mould. Also the BT profile is too aggressive in power saving, sending the trackball to sleep very early and taking around a second to wake up after moving the ball. Other than that, excellent battery life in the high setting and 1500DPI with a Panasonic Eneloop (A pack of 4 gives me enough battery for 6 months, more if i reduce to the low setting). Also I never turn off the trackball.

Oh and a thing you might want to try with the wireless dongle is putting it into a USB cable with a ferox core and run it underneath your desk near to where the trackball sits and attach it there. Some people have put foil lined paper over it to get a stronger signal but from some of the people working with that they say 2.4GHz doesn't work well with that without making a dome over it with the paper and then that is just getting silly unless you are on a standing desk.

I used a trackball for years because none of the mice available at the time fit my hand well and I also had the tendon pain issues. I still have that Microsoft trackball stored away. I have a mouse that fits my hand pretty well now. Ironically it's one of those Logitech ones with that fast scroll option you mentioned. I hope they never stop making mice that have that because I use it a LOT. I assume it's patented since Logitech seems to be the only company to offer it.

I love that scrolling option as well. there is only one better scrolling feature, a trackpoint, you know, the red dot in the middle of thinkpad computers, when you press the middle button bellow the spacebar converts the trackpoint into a scrolling device and is 2D scrolling now, since all it needs to activate is pressure allows for very precise scrolling it can be very slow or very fast.

I don't know why finger style trackballs are more common. In the real world you see the Logitech trackman and then all the various thumb ones they had since. Kensington has great products that I love. But they don't seem to know what scroll wheels are. I know their newer offerings have the rings, but the scroll wheel button is almost necessary at this point. After stumbling across the Huge and Deft, I've been very happy. The huge is my go-to at work. The hand rests naturally on it.

I do have the wired version of this, however- the hump of it really bothered my wrist placement and hand (for whatever reason)- switched recently to the Kensignton Expert Mouse Wireless. I do love the HUGE though because of its huge amount of buttons!

I used to use the Trackman FX and miss it dearly. Being a PC gamer, I have been using a mouse for past 10+ years, tonight I ordered Elecom HUGE (wired) in hope this will outshine the Trackman FX. Do you have a link to the ceramic bearings you installed?

The big thing i don't miss about mice, constantly picking up and setting the thing down. Still catch myself doing that once in a while with my logitech 570.

The first trackball (and not ball mouse) that I used and liked was a Logitech Trackman wheel on a friend's computer. While I couldn't convince my family to make the switch, I did realize that I liked the form factor better than most normal mice. Flash forward a decade and I've gone on to university. The desks were more credenza sized, so it was not easy to fit a monitor AND a keyboard AND a mouse, so I got a Logitech M570 and used it til the buttons died. I got another and later gave it to my girlfriend, who used it til the buttons died. Then I got a Logitech MX Ergo. All thumb balls til then. Then, at my work, they asked if I needed anything for my computer workstation. I asked for a Kensington ExpertMouse since I was curious about finger-operated models and needed a change in motion from what I used at home. Several of my coworkers made fun of the trackball, but that just means it's effectively coworker-proofed my computer :) The ExpertMouse got me hooked and I wanted a finger-operated trackball for home. I also wanted an input device with more buttons. Cue my first Elecom: the Deft Pro. A brilliant mouse that chews up batteries like nothing else, so I use it in wired mode most of the time. Next mouse I get will probably be a Huge since I like the looks of them and, for the same ergonomic reasons you mentioned, need a trackball that fits my hand just a bit better.

Just ordered one of these mice thanks to your video! And the balls! Hope it works out thank you. The reason I liked this is the nice thumb click and scroll wheel. The thumb is a lot stronger.

I used to use trackballs built by both logitech (trackman) and microsoft (trackball explorer). I ultimately ended up going to a mouse because of the lack of features on the trackballs. I saw all the mice getting wireless, additional buttons, etc, and the trackballs just getting the same (doesn't appear a lot has changed, I see no equivalent to my current mouse). This one is pretty similar to the trackball explorer, which I enjoyed using as my daily driver for a while. The trackman took over as I was more effective in gaming with it. After ditching those to get more features with the logitech G series mice, I settled on the Rival 500 by Steelseries, which I absolutely love with their software. I just wish they'd go back to being the king of macro keyboards as my apex 350 is aging.

I'm new to my used Logitech trackball. My laptop has a pad on the left side of the keyboard, and is difficult to operate right-handed, causing my fingers to ache and start deforming. The ball is much easier on your hand, than the pad. The ball has 4 buttons, and my only problem is vertical scrolling. But it was worth the $15 delivered.

I have this mouse and love it! It replaced a Microsoft trackball that died on me around 12 years ago.

That's the usual story, it seems; same here. I'm pretty happy with my huge too, but I don't feel any need for the bearing swap.

Super, can you make a review of the same mouse, and how to set it up under a resent linux distro, like Arch or ubuntu ?
@JessicaFEREM3 жыл бұрын
actually I differ on your opinion of the logitech selectable wheel, maybe the automatic one from the master, but not the one with a selectable button, it's easier to hold the middle click and move the mouse, and I've found it to be hard to middle click with those mice even in rachet mode.

I'm not having much luck with Elecom Huge mice purchased on Ebay. 1. seller indicated very clearly `WIRED` mouse (which I want) in the title of the listing. The item recieved was a Wireless mouse )-; Try again ... 2. From another 3rd party seller, the mouse received didn't work at all. Try again ... 3. Purchased one from the Elecom store (on ebay), but the response on Button 6 (and probably others) is very spotty. Sometimes the Left-Click I have assigned to Button 6 works, and sometimes it doesn't. There doesn't seem to be any pattern to the failure, and I tried constructing test use cases that are part of my normal usage (leaving a dialog box open and then changing context with the main pointer to another application), but couldn't get a reliable set of actions that cause the problem. 4. Tried working with their very pleasant support on ebay, but their only solution is to return the unit for refund and buy another. Unfortunately, the current ebay store count shows 0 of 18 available. /-: .... Will have to see. (I don't buy stuff on amz) 4a. When mouse #2 above wouldn't work, I did some searching and found numerous other users with similar issues. I was expecting to see at least one writer here complain that their's wasn't working. Glad that yours are working well! My use case seems to be different than many of the writers below. I have pretty bad arthritis in my right hand. I think a lot of this is due to my years of using mice and other computer input devices. When my current (and faulty) Elecom is working, my wrist/hand/fingers are doing much better. This is still probably a temporary solution, as the arthritis seems to progress over time. I think with this mouse I could actually use it "backwards" with my left hand and have a decade or more to wear those joints down. That might be all I need !-; (I have used a vertical mouse for the past ~2 years, and that gave me some great relief, but that really used my thumb a lot.). The alternate brand mice other users mention here are also intruiging to me. Any ideas/insights are welcome

I started using trackball mice about 15 years ago for the same reasons. Started with the index finger kind but found I like the thumb ball better. Elecom makes the best IMHO. I'm using the Elecom EX-G Pro for the last 3 years. I also use it for gaming, which tends to weird people out

Have an Telecom blue tooth ergo, Southpaw roller ball. One of the few I could locate and is terribly comfortable. Makes a huge difference in hand fatigue and shoulder. Excellent reviews, thank you.

is this the best Trackball out there that can replace the oldschool Microsoft Trackball Explorer? or is there something new that's coming out 2022/23?

Switched from a vertical mouse to a Logitech Ergo M575 recently. The thumb ball is slightly twitchy so I may be trying the Huge wired. I have one PS2 port on the new rig, having it's own dedicated IRQ is a good thing in my book.

Love my Kensington Orbit w/ Scroll Ring. Though the hand ergonomics on the Elecom look more comfortable. Having more than 2 buttons would also be nice.

Love me a trackball. Switched both my home and office setups to trackballs and I can't go back! Although, still can't game with it, so I keep a regular mouse tucked away for that.

Hi there , great video , how do you compare the Huge's scroll to Kensigtone experts ( ease of use and ergonomics )? I'm planning to get one of the two for music and audio production. Which one you'de pick for very detailed work ? Thanks alot
