I am a full time programmer and use the Kensington Expert Mouse. It has basically saved my wrist from carpel tunnel and constant pain by keeping my hand in one ergonomic position. They work basically the same as a trackpad when you get used to moving the ball. The technology is really not that much different than moving an optical mouse, except you manipulate the surface instead of using the surface to move. Highly recommend these for anyone with wrist pain.

I've got RSI from being taught to touch type from 1983 (heavy old 'sit up and beg' typewriters originally so I type HARD). Been using a trackball since the very late 90s and it's helped a lot. If I need a mouse I can use one of those vertical mice, but much prefer trackballs!

Switched to a Kensington trackball - the Orbit with scroll-ring - and never going back! Before that I had been using a graphic tablet for years so no carpal issues at all but after rearranging my studio, it was taking too much space. It might take a while getting use to it but it is worth the while - your hands, arms and back will thank you.

I've been using a trackball for gaming for over 20 years, in both league play and non. I've played nearly all genres and once I used one, there was no comparison in how much more effective I was was compared to using a mouse, especially in fps games. If this device is good enough for that application, productivity is a no-brainer, which I also used it for with Reaper and Acid (rip)
@MrHitomiplum2 жыл бұрын
Would love to hear more about this. When I was deep into computer games and FPS in the 90s trackballs were still a viable alternative to mice. Niche, but not an alien artifact like they are now. Even in videos where they are of the opinion that trackball mice are great for productivity and day-to-day use, the caveat tends to be "but not for gaming."

Holy heck, I know this video is 4 years old as of this comment, but you just opened my eyes and blew my mind. Years ago my dad who worked an office job got us a trackball for our family Windows XP, and I didn't really like it for gaming but I made it work. Later I changed to a crazy traditional "gaming mouse" for my own PC, and began doing my own creative work. Nowadays, over 10 years later, my old gaming mouse is really starting to drive my hands crazy. So I decided to look up other mouse options. Now this whole video explains a programmable trackball with all these features, and my brain exploded when thinking of how I might be able to use this in Blender. Programming keyboard shortcuts, super accuracy, all that. Heck, something like this might just have been the better option for messing around in gaming after all too.

Actually I've tried Kensington trackballs and they haven't done so much of a difference for my wrist and arm. What did the difference was Logitech MX Ergo trackball. So much better controlling the movement with the thumb and don't have to raise your two fingers consistently to move the trackball which adds to arm and wrist strain. More the two fingers stay where they previously were with normal mice so you are more familiar with it too. I was so relaxed working with it on studio that I bought a send one for home. Much of a difference and good price, starting from 35€ for the simple ergo and 70€ for the pro.

The slimblade has a flatter design, superior scrolling and cursor movement in my opinion, but worse button action; the button sweet spot is weird to me. On the other hand, the expert has great buttons, looks like higher build quality, but has a janky scroll wheel that's scratchy and wobbly, and angles my wrist more than the slimblade. I got my Kensington Slimblade today and man was I surprised? This is the best trackball I've ever used. The precision is remarkable, the software is so deep and what's even cool is that the software is even more advanced than what you get for gaming mouses for example a profile per application totaly crazy! Not sure if I will always use this or combind this with a regular mouse but for the moment I do not want to use my normal computer mouse. A nice thing is that if you have many or wide monitors is that you can set in the software a temporary mouse speed that takes place while you hold down a modifier key example ctrl or shift or alt or you can do the oposite that mouse slows down during selected keypress. Also this can be set as a mouse button event to change speed temporary :) Now I want to give an advice back that is when it comes to keyboards check out the logitech G915 or G815 depending on wired or wireless preference. The wired is good with the USB-slot near you for memory or charge things while at table. However that keyboard is so good for cubase since you can set individual colors on the keys and also you have 5 macro buttons that can be switched in 3 profiles!

Yeah, this thing about moving "so fast, and stress free" with a trackball, as if mice are slow, is just wrong. I measured how much i need to move my mouse to go from one end of the screen to the other, and it's not about 1cm (less than 1/2 inch). And that's my normal setting, which is very precise and comfortable. With a normal mouse I still use less space than that giant Kensington slimblade would take up. And i don't know what paper mice other people use, but mine (which weighs about 100 grams) never moves when I take my hand off it. These trackballs are still cool imo, but no need to invent problems :D

The reason why a lot of people into music may get pain in their wrists from using regular mousies is because a lot of people into music position their mouse in such a non ergonomic position, because their midi keyboard kinda is in the way of a good ergonomic positioning of the mouse. You need to sit up straight, with your upperwarm downards and your lower arm about in about a 90 agree angled compared to your upper arm. It's really not htat hard, but I see so many setups where the mouse is completely put on some random space somewhere, while you may use hte mouse more than the midi keyboard. I've just set my midi keyboard next to me, so that when I use the computer itself, I can position my mouse in a propher manner and do not get wrist pain. And I gotts say I'm phrone to get wrist/hand issues, since Ivé had them before when i was in the wrong postion.

espace: i use trackpad. And this ball looks comfortable but takes all the space, you can use only in one position (trackpad can be vertical) precision of playhead: use keyboard, set nudge by tick views: hold option and swipe fingers for zoom in, out, whatever mixer: a pro has second display for mixer or midi roll no? Or open with a letter like M. loop: ?, move selection by cycle lenght playing instruments: i use a track pad on the piano keyboard , you can place a trackpad everywhere cc: you can even use it for cc and automation, many times the best choice since you don’t have to learn midi every time ! precision: it is not precise for everything, but more than a mouse. For precision you should use inspectors, midi controller, or a mouse with a solid scroll button this looks good for mixers with big studios, not composers with small studios. Now i understand why i only see trackballss in these cases ;) trackpad can be better with some extensions or buttons , but is far superior than mouse if you compose music on keyboard/computer

The Logitech M570 trackball mouse is the best for gaming for me. I have large hands . All other mice are way too small. [actually I need something bigger]. You control the ball with your thumb. Interesting. You do bring up some really good points, about not having to worry about your cursor moving while placed and the short cuts are great to assign to the buttons too. I think I would personally replace your open mixer command, to open the lower zone in Cubase instead, but that is the beauty of being able to customize to the user. What I am worried about is the comfort and speed of moving around. I am VERY used to a regular mouse and don't find it slow, or fatiguing at all, to use. I am wondering just how fast and awkward these trackball mice would be to use, as I think they would be quite an adjustment. To top it off, aren't track ball mice going backwards? I swear we had these in the late 80s and early 90's as the norm.

Pros: - May take up less space - Prevents carpal tunnel But other than that it's inferior in every way to a mouse, I can see you're struggling to make precise movements with the mouse, using a mouse you could do all the same things but faster and more precisely.

It does take less space. And this is huge. It does help with carpal tunnel (in my case it was the only mouse that helped). Health comes first. I find it way more precise. But it’s a personal thing. I always used the logitech thumb trackball on my pro music making pc. It just works for making music because also when you scrub and scan through timeline the idea of doing this from a fixed point of refference gives you the feeling you have more grip on your workflow. This is in contrast with playing 3d games where it's exactly the other way around. I could never play 3d games with a controller or a trackball because it feels like moving the camera is more tangible if you can move the mouse around.

You picked my interest ! I usually work with a Wacom tablet (size L), which is a no brainer for graphical and design works (photoshop, solidworks), the precision is very high and can be increased dynamically, and you have pen pressure and tilt, and even pen rotation ! There is nothing better when one need high precision with non 100% horizontal or vertical movements, eg., with drawing a shape or writing. You also can have other pens such as the airbrush (pressure is associated to elevation). I use it also for regular desktop and cubase. Many button are programmable; but the size L of the surface can be a problem; maybe M and S are better if you have a crowded studio. I wonder how it would compare with the trackball for cubase !

I'm still using the Orbit and I'm quite content so far! I'm left-handed but that's irrelevant since you can use it with both hands + depends on your set-up. - Point accuracy would take some adjusting to do. (If you care for it but doesn't take that long). - Scrolling with the wheel is smooth and most say it's smoother than the Expert. - Panning with the mouse cursor, it's very responsive - Discomfort no more, especially if you experience Carpal Tunnel. - If you want to test an entry-level trackball, I do recommend the Orbit. - You do need to clean it from time to time, the area where that trackball's in and those small light sensors to be specific. Just use a cloth to wipe the gunk. I'll probably invest on the Expert or an Elecom if I want a wireless one. Also I'm not using a bigger screen, I'm just using a standard 1980 x 1080 monitor. I've seen the Expert more responsive in larger monitors, iMACs in particular.

aiborie thank you, do you think it would work well for a PC sitting in an office. I have carpal tunnel in my hands and clicking a mouse all day long is killing me!! In fact I have no use of my right hand is I’m in so much pain my wrist is all swelled up.

@@tonymarinelli7304 Np! I think it would be perfect for an office setting, this is my setting at home though since I share computers in the office. It's important you're comfortable! You do still need to click with it but you'll be using your thumb and your ring/pinky finger for right-click with the Orbit. I specifically chose this as my entry level since my other options were the Logitech M570/MX Ergo and I didn't like it uses the thumb, the motions wouldn't be as wide than of a trackball that uses your index/middle finger. The Orbit is cheaper too! Buy it your life kind of product. Well I'm taking care of mine haha.

Eager to try trackball one time, but I've never understood the argument of lack of space. I can move to furthest corners on whichever monitor on less space than the footprint of that trackball. Only reason I'm interested is that I want to move my motion from wrist to fingers.

But how did you set it up, @Dom Sigalas? I just got mine based on this video... But your menu shows labels which are apparently custom... So the problem is now, we have to know which keys are associated with the buttons you are pressing. Are they macros? If so, what are the macros? A tutorial would be SUPER awesome! Best wishes on a successful 2023.

Dom - got the Kennsington and loved it immediately. In the video, you mention another video on how to further customize with Cubase. I can't find this video. (?) You also mention a "link" at 6:27 but I'm not seeing it. Appreciate you help :-) - Pete Radd

@@DomSigalas - the link goes to another (splendid of course) video on creating the perfect mix. Do you have a video specifically on customizing the Kennsington for Cubase functions like you demonstrate here? That's what I thought you're saying at 6:27. For example - are these "key commands" or macros? Thanks - your friend / student / and fan - - Pete Radd

Guys be VERY careful with these. They absolutely destroyed my wrists, 20 years later Im still struggling with tendonitis. The constant flicking of entire wrist will take a toll on your joint and tendons, trust me

I started using a Steam Controller as a mouse when I began working from home this year, and it works great when I am standing (since I can pace around while working), and I can program in most of my hotkeys. However, the Steam Controller is NOT very convenient when I am sitting down and need to use both mouse AND keyboard at the same time. Problem is, I use a recliner, and don't have a lot of mouse space, even with a custom removable armrest mousepad I built. Picked up a trackball mouse and... woah. This is really super convenient! Plus with the red trackball sitting on the armrest, my chair now looks like something out of a sci-fi movie. 😎

as for space... my mouse is way way smaller than any trackball.. as for moving the mouse, i move it 2cm (less than 1") to get cursor from upper left corner to lower right, rarely do i need to move it that much.

Hi, thank you, just bought a slimblade pro it sound's amazing. I don't find how to assign shortcut of the click to a shortcut or fonction in cubase, for exemple the loop, how do you do that please ?

Wonder if anyone could help me. I've just bought a kensington expert mouse wireless and I'm really loving it. I'm using it in Cubase Pro 10. My question is, how do you customise it to bring up options like 'open mixer' etc in Cubase. I don't see the option for cubase specific triggers in the kensington works software, only generic commands like cut, copy, paste etc. Thanks.

I use a logitech trackman, and I permanently said goodbye to wrist cramps. People keep looking down on trackballs saying it's old and not good for gaming. Hey bro, guess what. People with actual careers who want to stay healthy uses these things so maybe don't think that all computer items should revolve around gaming.

Would Logitech MX Ergo be a good option? I like the idea of trackball for precision in Cubase, but am also in need of a mouse for a bit of gaming once in a while. Currently the game, Baldurs Gate 3.
