I designed and 3D Printed sandals inspired by an Iris Van Herpen dress. The filament used is made up recycled plastic waste from the footwear industry.

You can use modifier in PrusaSlicer to vary your infill density to different parts of the sandle. Make the bottom thicker and the top thinner maybe. Softer on foot. Harder/longer lasting on ground. I haven't read up on it yet fully, but I also heard there were people able to print TPU onto PLA/PETG/ABS via a complicated filament change/slicing process (maybe even adjusting extruder tension at the same time of course).. maybe there's an option to use PETG/ABS that with more bendability than PLA to print most of the sole but then use TPU for the padding on the foot and the straps going up. If I missed it rushing at the end.. oops.. but maybe even a post process to glue a more wear resistant bottom to the shoe but that's dependent on usage determining if the TPU on the rest of it last long enough to worry about it. But this is all before various Nylons and Polycarb are on the mix. I can print them on my setup now so I'll keep an eye out on their characterstics for this application.... I might give that a shot someday for a gift for my girl. Hmmm.

Awesome feedback. I have yet to mess around a bit more with all the features that slicers have to offer. That material layer idea is something I’ve though about and have heard others suggest as well. I also love that concept of adapting the print’s infill or properties for different parts of the sole. Plan on making more footwear so I may dive into some of these explorations in the future. Thanks for the tips. 👍🏼

If I were tasked with making those things with the mesh I would use a very small needle and just loop stitch it, but it does depend what kind of mesh, some require a zigzag stitch on the cut edge to stop fraying. But using glue you might be able to look into the glue that is on stabilizers and the wax paper those use to stop it from sticking, but the glue might melt at the same temperature as your 3D print

they're stunning without the buttons, too! Love the meta of the source filament, even if it didn't work out, it's fun to think about. i hope you get the button thing working -- that's a neat bit of tech. 7:40 sketch artists will take the masking tape and stick it over their arms before using it to lower the adhesion a little and make it less likely to damage the drawing. bye

😮 Good point in regards to the tape!!!! Thank you so much!! I’m definitely going to explore this again and do a “sandals take 2” 😜. I appreciate the encouragement.

I was thinking what would happen if u mixed the two different filaments like make the black as a bottom and then print a white over the at well ig basically putting a black layer after the white with how u printed so u have the comfort of the white filament and the stability of the black filaments

This is really cool because one of my ideas is to make a 3d printable version of the Lobster Claw shoe. However, my problem isn't designing in Fusion 360 but rather printing it where I have no supports. Short of SLS nylon printing, it won't be possible with FDM - maybe you have ideas? I like how you made the sandles flat and pretty much used a sheet metal method (design). For the Lobster Claw, the top must be in softer TPU. The bottom must be strong enough to support a person's weight (static and dynamic force). Not so easy to solve.
@SewPrinted
@SewPrinted 2 жыл бұрын
Interesting ideas. I think the main challenge (with FDM) will be testing the angles at which your printer can print without needing support. I've seen people print sneaker-like shoes before and some use support but others don't. I haven't tried printing a non-sandal shoe yet but I plan to at some point. I do suggest using a TPE /TPU material when you do. I truthfully don't have experience with SLS printers so I can't speak to wether or not that would be a better option. Would love to see your claw shoe when you accomplish it!!

Seeing the first prototype's floopiness and the second one's warping makes me wonder if warping could be used to give something made with a flexible filament a bit more rigidity(like folding pizza?), or maybe even to get a somewhat ergonomic shape without directly modeling it. If you know if this has been done in the past or have general thoughts on this I'd be happy to hear them :)

Is your printer direct drive? Just an idea but id love to see a video of your equipment and maybe how you got tpu dialed in. Alot of people struggle with it but you seem to have it nailed.

Thank you for suggesting this. Glad to hear its something that would be of value to you. I’ll add this to my “video ideas” queue. To answer your question: yes, my printer is direct drive and great for flexibles !! 👍🏼
