We mostly fish the scrounger / wobble heads uphill for that very reason you described. Try that and your catch rate will go up. Instead slowing down to maintain bottom, going uphill makes you speed up and speeding up gives you the action your looking for. Good video!

Jacob Anderson I went back to the other video because I was curious how many complained about him talking too much. It was just one comment, maybe others got deleted, but that one guy was just rude. Couldn’t sit through a couple minutes of him laying out the test. The rest where comments on him not mentioning the brands and camera angles. He talks about the brands this video so he is listening. Cameras are expensive so I didn’t expect much in that department.

So those complaining about you talking too much don’t want info on the baits, the retrieves, the action? Sounds like those viewers are on the wrong channel then. Please keep doing what you’re doing.

Just wanted to add my 2 cents. I fish the Scrounger heads a lot, mostly for inshore, saltwater bass in So. Cal. I used both the Jenko and Picasso Suijin 1 Oz. Mag. The standard bills on the Picasso are similar to the Jenko bills, so they seem to effect the tremor shad the same way with good side-to-side action at a steady, medium retrieve. When you scale down to the 5" tremor shad, the 1 Oz scrounger heads overpower the bait and you get a more pronounced, violent action. To adjust for this, I have found that you need to trim the sides of the bill approximately 1/8" on either side to make it narrow. It takes a few minutes in the pool or on the water to figure out how much you need to trim to get the bait to swim correctly. I have also used the 7" Z-Man Jerk Shadz on the 1 oz. heads, and for that bait to swim well, you do need to trim the bills also. Same for the Magnum Zoom Super Flukes, as they have similar weight and density as the Z-Man. The Picassos also come with additional bills, one thicker/stiffer and one thinner/more flexible. I haven't tried using the thinner blade on the smaller/lighter flukes yet. THIS DOES MEAN THAT YOU HAVE TO DEDICATE A SCROUNGER TO FISH A SPECIFIC BAIT (TRIMMED FOR SMALLER FLUKES AND UNTRIMMED FOR JENKO TREMOR SHAD, FOR EXAMPLE).

You have / had the retrieve right. The best dude I’ve ever seen with it is Jake Lawrence. It’s not a steady retrieve because unlike a swimming pool there is Current..the scrounger will rise and it’s hard to keep on bottom. If it’s too heavy it doesn’t have the correct wobble once you add a bait. The Hog Farmer and Picasso Heads are very good. Good Video

Even with the straight tail baits it’s seems the lighter sizes don’t work as well as the heavier versions. Seems to me these heads shine working through the lower to middle water column.

Great video!! As someone who fishes on Pickwick, the slow retrieve that is steady is what works best. You can pop your rod to make it dart a bit if you want to give it a different action, but in the summer when ledge fishing hits its finest those bass will hit it even going faster. I actually think keeping it a couple of feet off the bottom is best for this bait. You really don't want it dragging. Thanks for showing the different baits. It really helps when making purchases and knowing what action you are looking for in a bait.
@bobfishnut
@bobfishnut 4 жыл бұрын
You probably mean a soft sweeping retrieve with a gentle pop once or twice. Correct? What speed reel do you recommend using the bait?
@joepatrick3720
@joepatrick3720 4 жыл бұрын
bobfishnut No it would be a slow retrieve. No sweeping. You don’t want to be at the back of your sweep and get a bite. You sweep your rod to set the hook on this like a chatterbait. Usually a 7:3:1 or close to that speed.

Nice style of video. Scroungers, to me, are very temperamental. I received one in a monthly box, and struggled to get good results. Seemed too easy for it to blow out. I eventually gave up on it. I'm guessing that's what a lot of others have done, too, which is probably why it never took off like it's sibling, the chatterbait. I think you touched on something, though, in trying a paddletail with it. I'd be interested to see how it reacts, if you rig the paddletail, upside down, like many do on a chatterbait. Anyway, keep the informative videos flowing! 🙂👍

I've been fishing scroungers since the original one A Mart developed. The thickness of the plastic bill is key to the action of the bait. The originals had a softer bill, like the current Picasso head. It is night and day compared to the Jenko heads, that bill is thicker and stiff. The softer bill will create alot more action and side to side roll and with the proper retrieve speed, will feel like a crankbait almost. Jonny, give the Picasso a try w a straight tailed bait, no boot tail, and I think you will be pleasently surprised how much better it runs on retrieve. Love the content, keep it coming. 513

just getting into these scrounger heads and seen just a couple videos before yours. I think others have come to a pretty certain conclusion that the straight tails, whether they be specifically designed for scrounger heads or not, will work the best. The objective of these heads are to create that side to side body roll, and by using a boot-tail you're not letting the blade wag the bait because by forcing action to the tail its impeding and defeating what the blade was meant to do. Guys swear by flukes with these heads although they weren't designed for scrounger heads!

Cool video! One thing to consider in future videos of this kind is; the durometer, or the "stiffness" of the soft plastic being evaluated and/or compared. For example, the reason Keitech swimbaits have better action, both wiggle and side to side, than most of the Keitech knock-offs is they have a durometer properly matched to the specific size of the bait. In other words, the bigger Keitechs have stiffer plastisol than the smaller ones. It would have been interesting to know the durometer of the Jerky J compared to the Tremor Shad. Keep up the good work!

The boot tail acts like a keel and limits the rolling action. The slender tapered tailed baits lack this and twist much easier along their long axis.

With the scroungers it is all about flash in your swim bait or craw trailer. It moves left to right so much that if you are using half glitter half just color it gives you that natural flash like a bait fish. One thing no one talks about is using it as a wake bait. Works good deep but works better as a wake bait in my opinion especially when looking for bed fish.

The heavy scrounger with jerky j works for lege guys , but I would research Aaron Martens he claims spent 30 yrs re inventing the bait. He frowns on boottails and key to scrounger is Aaron Saya diff water temps effect the bait bill. That is why he invented suijin. With changeable bills. I recently purchased every size and bill, because I feel Aaron is on to something.

No. Ideally the bait with castaic is a moving bait. Gear ratio is another factor. Jason lambert destroyed ky lake ledge fishing with jerky j and might I add I’m on staff with castaic. Pool has no current, no pool in the world I’ve seen is as smooth as a lake bottom. You can’t move the scrounged head side to side if it’s being prevented from movement on the pool. You bump into something you get reaction which leads to reaction strike. The water being pushed on scrounger head is why the kietech is reacting differently
