I think it is interesting about the historical perspective of how Rex says the new oak requirement came about. I write "Rex says" as sometimes I am not 100% sure I know when he is trying to slide in real facts to his long-standing making fun of something. If this is true it is truly just one more way people with money and influence have impacted our way of life. (I wrote a paper on hemp versus lumber in college and why lumber companies lobbied congress against hemp.) Begrungliy I will have to side with Rex if he actually taught me something. ugh... Congrats on approaching a wonderful topic in a humorous way. My thoughts, I believe as long as you as the producer are 100% honest on your labeling things are good, and if in the future we have a new category to enjoy that is good too. Rules are a double edge sword and should purposely take several cycles to create, debate, agree upon, and then later reviewed for their actual impact. Cheers.

@@olethanatos8173 I've heard an urban legend that one of the main driving forces behind outlawing marijuana in the US was the wood industry. Paper can be made from hemp as well, and with reportedly greater yields due to faster growth rates. So the wood industry heavily invested in marijuana-denouncement campaigns that influenced the image of hemp as well. Because they look the same and people can't distinguish whether it does contain THC or not by looks alone.

I can't help but constantly be reminded of The Big Lebowski at the bowling alley, where in the middle of the match Walter pulls his 1911 and says "This isn't 'Nam! This is bowling! There are rules!!" Also find funny that we're saying this on a spirit whose standard is only from the 1930s where the barrel requirement was largely set by lumber lobbying. Bourbon needs to have rules, but this isn't Germany with its beer purity rules that date back to the 1500s...

Comparing Bourbon standards to German beer purity rules is ludicrous. Bourbon is a new spirit compared to beer. How many centuries (and countries) was beer produced before the Germans decided there should be rules? By comparison, Bourbon set its rules pretty early on in its existence. Just because people want to get creative with spirit making doesn't mean that purists have to sacrifice their product on the altar of change. Go off and make your flavored Frankenstein creations. Nobody cares if you make them. Just don't try to call them Bourbon. People who want that label are the same kind of people who liked New Coke. LOL

I would love for "Finished" to be an add on labeling law the same way that "Straight" is. You still have your base requirements and then you add additional requirements on how long you can finish something and how you display the information. This way you can apply "Finished" to any category and require that the base spirit meet the original rules. Finished Corn Whiskey, Finished Rye, Finished Bourbon, Finished Rum...all if it. Otherwise you have to come up with a new category for every possible combination of Finished and the TTB book doubles in size.

If you compare the descriptions of the woodinville Bourbon finished in Port barrels and the Double (or Triple) Barrel Blended Whiskey I think it shows they are doing more than finishing to disqualify the label. They seem to imply with Double Barrel that the ex-bourbon barrel "completes maturation" where the port barrel is used after maturation is complete.

I love Matt Porter and his content, and, by the way, he IS "big wood". However, I can appreciate what Rex says after babbling and blowing hot air for 20 minutes. Bourbon doesn't stop being bourbon by finishing it, and there needs to be some simple clarification between "basic bourbon" and "finished/specialty bourbon". That might actually push the Bourbon craze to an even higher level of interest than we see now because it would be much easier for everyone to understand "The Rules".

I love the idea of a separate “finished bourbon” category. Also, after some thought, I fully agree with all of your proposed finished bourbon rules. However, I would love to see a whiskey category where it’s secondary or tertiary aging is longer than the primary aging, i.e. a bourbon aged in new charred oak barrel for 4 years, then a sherry cask for 6 years. I wouldn’t feel comfortable calling it “finished” when it has spent more time in the sherry cask, but I feel like there could be a lot of potential and great whiskey that came from a longer “finishing” process. Maybe double aged? Triple aged? What do you think?

All the puns intended and another way for you to use Dad rap. You're welcome. No but seriously, get other major distillers involved to get that stuff fixed because it's BS that delicious whiskey that should be called Bourbon One Way or another does not get that technicality and crap can throw bourbon on their bottle to use what the deliciousness of bourbon is in likeness to just sell product. One change. Finished bourbon should be a category, but rather than limiting the finishing to time in new oak greater than time in the finishing barrels, you should just have to put the age statement for each stage on the bottle (with a minimum font size) for anything called bourbon. This will be especially important with multiple finishing stages. This also mostly solves the no age requirement at least from a consumer protection perspective.

Hilarious video. But I am in full agreement with Rex. There does need to be a minimum time of barrel aging to qualify as a bourbon. Also I fully agree with the government expanding the definition to include as a "finished bourbon" any bourbon base that is then placed (after adequate new oak barrel aging) into a barrel to finish it and add additional complexities to it. It still remains a bourbon as it meets the minimum requirements, it's been aged as required...they've simply taken it one additional step by aging for more time in other barrels. Personally I don't county that as providing any "additives".
