Yea! I had one, “Minnesota-ized,” around fifty years ago. The Minnesota edition was lightened by the running boards having long ago rusted and fallen off, allowing the holes where they mounted to act as water inlets and outlets (alternating as you accelerated or braked). It also had a recurring timing issue which once resulted in a very loud backfire followed by a receding bouncing metal sound (the passenger side tailpipe blew off and rattled back along the road). It also featured a special four-speed transmission which you operated by stirring the gearshift like a cauldron of porridge, anticipating eventually finding a working forward gear. What a machine! Have fun with Ragnar! There must be an Iceland story in his history.

I also have to agree. That’s way to nice (even with minor mods and a few paint jobs) to cut up. And it’s an older bug. I’m not saying you should restore it I’m suggesting either sell it to someone that does want to restore it or someone that just wants to drive it as it is. I say find one that’s rougher, or already modified. Or maybe a later version (mid-70’s or newer) that isn’t as valuable as a 60’s beetle. That’s just my opinion. Do what you want, it’s YOUR car. I’ll still watch the build. 👍🏻

The suspension on this is front torsion leafs and rear torsion bars. The torsion bits are inside the tubes. Many years ago my father then myself built aftermarket off-road suspension systems for bugs and baja's. We also did disk brake kits and CV joint adapters so you could use 911, 914, or 924 CVs and longer splinted axles. OH that was all so long ago... now I feel old.

Great project, I had a 69 Beetle as my first car back in 1982. I think the "van, increased ground clearance parts swap" you mention was the installation of reduction gear boxes from a van to the rear of the Bug. It does give more ground clearance but it does change the final drive ratio and it reverses the rotation of the axles so you have to flip the differential over so you don't have 4 speeds in reverse.

I actually had one of these, it was a 1971. I also helped prepare and race a Baja 1000 bug in the dark ages. Usually we Replaced the stock distributor with a Bosch centrifugal advance unit called a 007 after the last three numbers. And replaced the carburetor with a Holly bug spray for the street or dual Webers if going big. We also used a counterbalanced crankshaft as the stock unit lacks weights and pounds out the bearings if reved over over 5500. We changed the heads for units with silicone bronze guides, a competition valve lap job and replaced the rocker arms and cheap bushings with roller bearing rocker arms that don’t gall. With new pistons and rods that you file down to balance, you can rev to about 6000 without blowing up. With an extractor exhaust this should give about 100 HP. If you want more you can use a stroker crank and big bore pistons and a spacer under the heads to restore deck height. Don’t go too long or it won’t clear the case. You will need a lighter stronger flywheel with additional ( four more) oversized dowels to take the power and a completion clutch. And there are kits to strengthen the transmission and differential spiders. I always liked Bilstein shocks and steering damper but your lifted suspension may have a kit with shocks. Don’t forget an additional oil cooler and blueprinted oil pump. Add a temperature gauge in the speaker grill on the left.

What a joy to see this . This was my first car and I still miss the character of it . This is a lucky find in this condition. In the UK they used to rot out really badly . The tiny bolts holding the running boards on used to weld themselves in with rust and the bolts holding the wings on did the same . The jacking points were also very prone to rotting out . Cars in this condition (lack of rust) are worth a lot of money in the UK now . Looking forward to seeing you work on this . Great choice 🙏🙏👍👍

the pan on that bug is excellent, back in 1977 when i was in the Marines the guys would pick up my 65 bug and put it sideways in a parking spot some days. You have a lot of work to do on that project, Sarah. I did take out the 1300 and replaced it with a 1650 and kept the 1300 tin, I used a Crowler cam, counter balanced crank, ported heads with 1.6:1 ratio rockers, windage tray inside the cases, dremeled all the flashings for oil return to the bottom of the case, high volume oil pump, Bosch 09 distributor, Chrome Velocity stack with air filter, Trimill exhaust, 200mm clutch kit from Southland clutch, shorty shifter kit, Bilstein shocks, 205R15 continentals and a roll cage. It was not slow and very much fun to have back then, i do miss it.

This is going to be great. What a fun project. My Dad had a brand new 1969 Beetle when I was 6. We travelled everywhere in that thing. In the days before seatbelts my brother used to sleep in the compartment behind the rear seat 😮. I helped my Dad convert several of these to dune buggies and we generally installed the bus rear transaxle. I am going to watch this agin with my Dad tonight. Really looking forward to the rest of the vids on this project.

Beautiful car in excellent condition it deserves full restoration like grandma's truck with some power upgrades. It's a piece of history. As a giveaway turning it into an off road Class A is a no from me. I think it will have limited appeal.

I learned to drive on a 65 bug in 1971. It was fun to drive it was like a Go-cart, and if you could drive that you could almost drive anything.

My love for the Beetle started when I was in Puerto Rico . My Uncle had a 68 bug dropped with Porche wheels. I guess I will be going to be in the giveaway. It would compliment my 2012 beetle.

I'm here for this, should be great. I nice addition would be something called a Fireslayer for the engine bay. It mounts in the engine bay, and if you have a fire, the heat melts the plastic ring containing the fire suppressant, putting out the fire. Put a short throw shifter in it, dual carbs, and a performance exhaust.

This is gonna be a fun one! It’s cute. Just wish it didn’t have that blue line sticker… My suggestion as a lighting nerd is Koito H4 halogen headlamps from Daniel Stern and Philips/Osram RacingVision/NightBreaker Laser bulbs so you can see at night. They even look sorta like sealed beams and work way better than Hellas or cheap LEDs

Great Choice Sarah . My generation learned to drive in those cars. They were most families second car. Vee-Dubs gave us an honest feel for the road. Taught us how to down shift and rev match by ear. We ARE Not one legged drivers like I see today.

If you really enjoy driving the bug, and you haven't ever had the chance to drive a VW Karmen Ghia, you should. It is a ton of fun. My dad had one, used to love driving it.

Ragnar is one clean bug ! Nice find 👌... ive been into bugs for forever and a day... 69 is a great all around year as far as bugs go...plus it seems to have an upgraded engine with the dual port heads. Vdubs respond well to dual carbs and a header exhaust which it look like there is a type of header already in place... weber makes a nice 34 mm dual carb kit they are known as baby webers. You can lift the rear by adjusting the torsion bars for no cost at all and ad taller tires. They sell adjustable front beams or you can buy the adjusters and weld them in place. Less drag on the brakes the better since bugs need all the help they can get lol... if your drums are hot after a short ride id back off the adjusters a bit... looking forward to this build... your semse if humor kills me 🤣🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪
