Coming from someone who's skated almost 28 years and teaches beginner and intermediate groms... Good observation; however, I believe the real issue is that an ankle with so much incline has less potential energy for a good pop, not so much the surface area of contact. When your foot is more flattened, as you pop up, your calf/ankle isn't wasting energy. Having more contact is definitely important, especially in the center of your tail, though - as you've said. If you apply this reasoning for heelflips, it stays the same. Back foot on a heelflip is best placed close to the pocket opposite your toeside of the tail. But again, if your foot is angled up high, you're still left with a muted pop, whereas a relaxed near level foot can give you more. So, it's not necessarily about surface contact - but it depends on the trick. Just food for thought. Keep shredding brother.

Your deffiently right on that. My reasoning originally was less area of contact more power in a specific place, which in some cases does help me. This was the first time though I really broke down tricks i already knew how to do. So for me personally I may have lost some height on tricks but gained consistency. I am stoked to see everybody adding tips to this video so thank you. Now heelflips is where I'm on the neen side. I heelflip from my Ollie position.

Crazy difference man! So cool how one little change in technique can change all your tricks that much. That’s what I love about skating, sometimes you plateau in your progression and then you discover something like this and make massive improvements in a day.

I probably do the same thing as you. I skated mainly in the 90's, picked it back up briefly in around 2005, before having mental troubles that prevented me from really going out. Picked it back up again in around 2014, and the same thing happened again. We're now at the end of 2024, and I am using Skating as a way to try and get myself back outside again. Anyway, I probably do the same thing with the pop. I also realised I am not lifting my back foot enough on an ollie, which is killing any height I might get. Well we're properly into Winter here now, so everything is frozen. I won't get to practice unless I go to an in door park, until Spring now. I just hope I can learn to pick up that back foot, and get some decent height. I won't be able to move on to kickflips until then. I mean I've always been able to do 180 shuvs, I had them before I could even ollie, but I never learned the proper flip tricks because I couldn't get enough height on my ollie. I moved straight to doing 50:50 grinds, as soon as I could pop the board on to a small ledge. Would be cool to be able to finally learn to do kickflips, but I am a lot older now. I just wish I'd done this sooner, but mental health has really impeded any progress for the longest time.
@CpSkates
@CpSkates 28 күн бұрын
I didn't learn kick flip until I was 21. It wasn't something I even set out to do. I was skating with a friend who had been trying them for a couple weeks. To mess with him I tried a few and landed the 3rd one. I've just started to focus specifically on my pop. To do a 5050 I never need a ton or special foot placing. Once I got into 5.0s nose grinds and tail slides it made all the distance. I'm sorry to hear about the mental challenges, but happy to hear your back on boards.

Great session bro - the more we dedicate to skating the better we will be - in my opinion as a 43 year old- I’ve been removed from skating consistently for more than 15 years- I have to approach skateboarding like professional athletes- everything matters - lifestyle - diet - rest . Keep it up don’t do what I did and have to learn all over again

Another funny foot placement that many dont seem to notice is to take the foot in a lil from the end edges, whether its nollie or regular. Is most noticed for nollie stuff when approaching a ledge to nollie into. Take the pop foot in a lil rather than at the end of popping edge. Its like leverage for more popping power which, technique permitting, holds the board to the feet better
@CpSkates
@CpSkates Ай бұрын
I do that when ever I need a quicker pop. You actually loose a little bit of leverage, but gain speed from it. I do use it for nollie the most too.

I think of popping with my toes (or something like that) for most basic tricks especially ollie variations, although the way I’m doing it is probably not as drastic as I feel it is. The idea of my foot being effectively flat is super foreign to me, popping with your toes is all about building up pressure to snap the board into the air more naturally and that’s what’s worked for me but I also pop from the back heel side corner not the toe side, I’ve never understood how people get a good pop with their whole tail covered (except for things like backside flips etc.)
@CpSkates
@CpSkates 25 күн бұрын
My foot position on the tail depending on what trick. Front side vs backside stuff. The biggest take away I would say is this wasn't directly about the pop, more about the consistency. It also feels a lot more comfortable, not in doing the trick itself, but with the bones in my foot. Of course do what works for you brother. It ju

Flat backfooters of the world, unite!! I realized I do this for a while now, and even talked about it in a comment on a recent rose anvil video. I feel heavy on my board still. But that heaviness ties in to balance, when I squat low enough I feel I reset my balance. I’ve been doing the same thing, but was getting scared of landing primo on kickflips over small gaps. The back foot always took more damage because of how heavy I am on it also. I worked on ollie’ing a gap and then I kickflipped it. I suck at gaps and stairs but the more I work on it, the more comfortable I feel. On manual pads, too. I remember watching a yuto b-side of him getting a clip and observing his back foot. He had it closer to the pocket/concave. I realized you get a straighter pop hinging over the axle, but less power that way. Incorporating that into my skating slightly, I felt more confident about where to put my foot. I think for skating we get hung up on “the right way” when there’s personal variations, some people have different style, and there’s also trick variations. I can give you like 5 different kinds of shuvits but none of them work for me when going fast. Doesn’t invalidate those 5 variations, just means a way of doing a trick is usually not one size fits all. I skate flat footed as hell, my plantar fascia always hurts after a session, especially if I land primo. Mines is a quest for shoes that don’t bend in half.

I completely get it, thankfully no dancers toe for me. I am flat footed though I have zero arch and talk about it more in the next video. I explain my 575$ insoles and stuff like that. Popping with my foot flat deffiently doesn't work with every trick, that's why I chose those 5 for this video. I'm sure there are more but that is something I'll figure out over the next few years. Thank you for your feed back and experiences.

@AgedSkaters
@AgedSkaters Ай бұрын
You know I've been thinking about this as well. I wonder if it's also the amount of travel you have available in your ankle to slap the tail. Basically, with the foot at a 45 degree angle, you can't use the ankle as much to get that additional slap because there's not much additional movement available to most people. Having the foot at more of a 5 degree angle would give you an additional 40 degrees of ankle movement for that slap. I've been telling people to load up their ankles like you used to do, but I'm starting to question if I've been guiding them wrong all this time.
@CpSkates
@CpSkates Ай бұрын
Well honestly I agree with both ways. So I'm moment I lowered my foot it felt significantly more comfortable but when I went to do a crooked grind just due to a Fear Factor I guess I rather have my foot tilted up more so I didn't bump it against the ledge . And kind of the same thing I want to do a switch 50/50 and I couldn't do it with a flatter foot. And that's why in the video I picked out five particular tricks. I'm sure there are more I just need to go back and try hundreds both ways.
@AgedSkaters
@AgedSkaters Ай бұрын
@@CpSkates I think fear factor and reducing chance of getting in the way are totally valid reasons to switch it up, but with tricks requiring a really good pop, I can see how lifting the ankle less would be beneficial. I'll have to try it out, but it makes sense, conceptually.
@CpSkates
@CpSkates Ай бұрын
@AgedSkaters yeah I think it's worth a shot giving a try. When I gave it a try for the kickflip it was just kind of like a slap in the face. Everything else was a bit of a happy accident.

I also never bail and land on the ball of my feet. Always on the heel. Your leg (and body weight) is supposed to be over your heel not your toes. (For toeside grinds, it requires daily conditioning.) Sometimes the outer edge of the foot when shifting weight. Dunks have extra foam in the heel of the cupsole. It’s called the ‘midsole’ and you can’t see it, but it’s there. Some cupsoles are hollow with a lattice structure. Sometimes I'm glad I did other stuff for the last 15 years haha, gives me a fresh perspective. Good luck 👽🛸

hi mate, cool video but i just started yesterday and if i may ask, is the "goofy" stance any bad than regular?..and may i get any tips in starting skating?
@CpSkates
@CpSkates Ай бұрын
Thank you for the compliment. There is no difference with regular and goofy. You choose your stance based on your balance level. Simple question is if I asked you to stand on one foot which foot would you pick to balance one. That would become your front foot. The best tip I can give you is a beginner would be that if you want to play around practicing Ollie's and tricks that's perfectly fine. But spend a lot of time riding your skateboard do you want to be very very comfortable with your pushes with your turns once you have that unlock you want to spend just as much time mastering your Ollie and I know it might feel frustrating that you're not progressing much but trust me it makes everything else significantly easier as time goes on.
@wipegaming1569
@wipegaming1569 Ай бұрын
@CpSkates appreciate it mate, also how do you conquer the fear of skating, i know it might sound a bit stupid but i really overcomplicate and overthink a lot especially on riding it, like what if i fall or something or might not get my balance right
@CpSkates
@CpSkates Ай бұрын
@wipegaming1569 you will fall many many times. Best way to get over the fear of riding is actually to have friends around. If thats not a option you just start slow. I learned to ride in a very slight down hill drive way and rode down it for weeks before I started to push. Once the over fear is gone, it becomes a battle of fear for each trick. Some the fear goes away fast and others it never does. So you build your bag of tricks based on what feels comfortable at that time.
