You should add cloth between the weights, acts like a mini shock and sound absorber. That way when you're screaming around the track you don't hear the inside of a gym in your car

Would you consider adding chasis braces? It would make the car stiffer and heavier. Maybe even a steel brush plate
@craigsawyer6453
@craigsawyer6453 Жыл бұрын
I would put the ballast weight UNDER the car, as flat as possible, (lower weight = better handling) and move the stiffer springs to the front of that tail happy beast. Tuning the suspension means actually tuning it not just going with what Toyota did. That car needs more than just wider tires to not swap ends. You are so right about the chasis braces and heavy plate.

@@craigsawyer6453 This is not an SW20. the ZZW30 has an extended wheelbase of almost a foot compared to the old MR2 and is very hard to swap ends with. It's far easier in an S2000. this is no Porsche 911 Turbo from 1978. You're exaggerating heavily based on myths made by older REAR engined cars and an MR2 that had a horrible weight distribution due to a cast iron block and far more weight nearer the rear axle.

How about fabricating some braces to make the chasis more rigid while adding some weight? Building some heavy duty underside metal skid plate (not a diffuser by the way *wink wink*) also could be a good way to add some more low CG ballast.

I feel like if you want to run 230whp, you'd want to use a 260whp capable engine (or more, depends on what the torque curve looks like) and detune it so that the peak power is the entire duration of the usable RPM range when shifting. In this case, unless there are rules to prevent this, wouldn't it make more sense to run this engine at 200hp, keep the additional weight out of it, and flatten the power band to ensure that you're at that 200hp peak for the entire upper RPM register or at least as much as possible? DBW makes this really easy and it seems like the obvious choice, because otherwise you're always being penalised for the extra weight, yet only at 230whp for a very small amount of time relatively speaking.
@FCustureri
@FCustureri Жыл бұрын
Now this is the way to play the rules and was commonly done in other racing orgs, so much so that most of them now use average HP in the rules instead. GridLife has always been really wacky on their rulebook and classing though, just checked and looks like GLTC still only uses peak WHP with a % modifier based on displacement (and a few cherry picked examples) so he prob can detune the peak legally
@thechris84567

If you dig through the gridlife rules, they specifically forbid this. Not detuning the engine but abnormally flat torque/power curves.
@FCustureri
@FCustureri Жыл бұрын
@@thechris84567 Reading through the 2023 GLTC rules states this, which sounds like they just use the displacement modifiers now as Ben showed? There also was a section above which assumed an additional modifier for detuning, but is now crossed out. "Based on the prior 4years of judgment and analysis of percentages of engine detunes, nondetunes, and types, it has been determined that in 2023 certain engines and sizes will receive modifier percentages inline with what has been judged to be effective for parity based on historical data. This percentage may change for certain brackets or engine families, as needed at any time."

If you ever want to push stupid amounts of power in the MR2, there’s a guy based here in the U.K. called StavTech on KZbin who’s worked out swap kits for 1.8t, VR5 and VR6s with both DSG and manual. Which means you can push past 1600+ without any subframe modifications or serious bulkhead work(I say that only because it’s easier to make part of the bulkhead rivnuted to be able to remove it when you need to work on the intake side of the engine). He’s got a fairly stock 1.8t one pushing over 500 on pump fuel rn, obviously the issue with your car isnt power it’s suspension/arb/tires (or a combination of all 3) but it’s possible to make these 3rd gen MR2s fking rapid without that much work!

I'm a 2ar-fxe spyder owner, hello :) If your bhp figure isn't accurate, e.g. those dyno figures over read your power, then right now your ballasting yourself to slow down the horse power you don't really have. A really good idea would be to dyno it at a few different places and see how the power figures compare. Ballasting for power you don't will make you very noncompetitive indeed! Mine only makes about 166hp at the wheels, and 200 at the flywheel. Its a fast car though, 13.3 second quarter mile on road tarmac and 4.45 second 0-60.

For a quick and dirty way to achieve the regulation demands that does seem like a good plan in the limited time frame.but i would do things a little bit differently instead of just directly adding ballast. 1- Since the rules consider the peak HP i would try to work a new tune with lower timing in the peak of the hp curve to have for example a constant 215hp in the rpm range you are gonna race instead of a 230hp peak. 2- Considering the car gets weighted with the tank empty instead of full in combination with #1 since e85 is not only has a higher density in weight but a lower density in energy going back to gasoline would allow you to run less fuel and most importantly less weight during the race and that's important especially when you consider as said before fuel weight does not affect the minimal weight. 3- Although the car has a cage already if you are already adding weight why not add it in the form of chassis bracing to improve rigidity as a consequence at the end of the day as much as the zz30 chassis is great it still is 25 years old so every bit of bracing is better that gym weights and if it is connecting points like sub-frame/suspension mounts an the bottom of the car is pretty much the best place to add weight. 4- with everything done as great as the single ballast mount looks great you are still raising that weight rising you center of gravity so bolt those to the floor and in two places for the lowest mounting location possible. and those are just simple observations without reading or knowing anything from the rulebook if you guys really wanna be competitive im SURE there is a lot more that can be exploited

I would like to see you add a rear wing to stop oversteering. Try moving the weight around front/ rear / middle and just see what works best. This with the wing and some bigger rear tire might fix the issue.

I hope you get the handling sorted out because it's the car's best feature. Lots of other folks have success with this chassis on track

@16:17 lol all that eating is not going to make you gain as much weight as Gyming lol. Muscle weighs way more than fat, and just like the car got some lifting weights in her, you should consider going to the gym and get a mass gainer and put in some work, it's healthy and you will gain those lbs.

Re. Adding weight - based on my experience of building a track going/race AW11 MR2 using parts from a very modified dedicated GT Class race car donor - wouldn’t you gain more (eventually?) by adding weight via: Fully seam welding the entire shell (I had mine done by a v. respected rally prep. company - literally welded all round the car & made it so much stiffer as a platform) Further adding to/ fully triangulating the cage including extensions to suspension points, engine mounts etc. (ditto, on mine) Strengthening key points like suspension towers, fixing points etc. and adding chassis braces to floor pan, strut towers (unless using the cage for that?), steering rack etc. Using bigger, heavier, stronger ball joints, fixings, hubs, brakes Then ballasting up as necessary with weight mounted to help weight distribution … rather than just adding plates. Mine was so stiff as a platform and so closely corner weighted front to back and side to side that it could run much stiffer suspension than normal (advised) and helped steering feel, precision, turn in etc. that once set up by the builders (a top notch race car builder/renovator in the Formula and Sports Racing arena) it was not only lovely to drive but was competitive with cars with much greater power. Just a thought(s)!

This racing class sounds like an absolute joke. "so that it's fAiR" sounds like why they make it such a horrible power to weight ratio because they know most cars made in america are absolute pigs and anyone with a decent weight savings would annihilate everyone else. It sounds like these are also rules set by 250lb Mcgriddles that all own big heavy cars that got mad once about a civic beating them so they had to make the rule to make it GROSSLY underpowered if it were to weigh less. eliminating the incentive and locking out the possibility. 230whp at 2800lbs is a sunroof equipped leather 240sx S14 with a bone stock SR20 and a light bump with nothing else done to it or a base FR-S. It essentially defeats the entire purpose of you owning a ZZW30 to make it weigh the same as an SW20.

This isn’t surprising. Below 60ish mph, it’s power to weight. But how much time will a race car be under 60 mph? Not a lot. Above 60ish, it’s about the power to drag ratio. Drag remains constant regardless of ballast so trading weight for power makes you faster all the time speed is over 60. Also, they get to use more tire which will easily offset the weight in the corners. This is because the force formulas for cornering and traction both have mass as a linear component. Add 100 lbs of weight and the effect on cornering is equal but opposite to the positive effect on traction. This equivalence is assuming identical tires! The only other factor not accounted for is that extra weight reduces the tires’ ability to chemically bond with the road surface. This is non-zero but it’s minimal. While this would be a small hit if the tires were kept the same, they’re not. The rules allow more tire for the extra weight which easily overcomes the chemical bonding trade off and the net is higher cornering speeds. So while losing weight is good ALL THINGS BEING EQUAL, in this case things aren’t equal and the rules favor heavier cars.

Something I did to cut my strut mounting area is use a hydraulic knockout punch kit on my MK7 GTI to get more camber adjustment without dismounting the coil-overs. Worked extremely well and cut a clean hole.

snap over steer isnt nearly as bad if you use proper braking zones and try not to drive like a fwd or awd car. seems like in this case, its more the driver input than the platform. its a mr, not a rr platform, you might not survive one lap if you drive a porsche the same way you drive a mr2 spyder.... spyder is really not that rear heavy 47/53 weight distribution you just need a lot more seat time and probably a better alignment
