If we only consider Z, then he still ended up in a better position than Gohan. Sure, he was killed by Cell, but every Z-fighter has been dead at least once, so it's not a big deal. At the end of the saga, he was the second strongest (after Gohan) person on the planet, and THE strongest once he returned to his timeline. He also killed the Androids and technically avenged himself by killing Cell, and then finally got to enjoy the peace he created, since no threat of that scale ever showed up in that timeline again.

Gohan tells Chi Chi Goku is dead and he decides to dedicate his life to training, to prevent any unnecessary sacrifices in the future 7 years passed, haunted by his recklessness, Gohan continues to train, struggling to live up to his father's name, but is occasionally congratulated by Vegeta for his Saiyan determination (He still goes to Orange Star High but not frequently) Gohan, not bothered by his public image being ruined, DOES NOT become great saiyaman and continues to fight crime as super saiyan, being more and more violent with the criminals, ridiculing them for being weak, and stupid He gets caught by Videl and she asks him to join the tournament. he refuses and flies off. He tells his mother he was late and someone offered him to join the tourney (Stretch) Chi Chi noticing the dark change in Gohan, urges him to take part and its what his father would have wanted. Gohan reminds his mother that Goku is dead. and that there is no time to play around with weaklings for trivial things. Chi chi and Goten are frightened. Gohan storms out, slamming the door behind him. The day of the tournament arrives. the z warriors are all there. including Goku. he asks where Gohan is... the mood suddenly drops... Meanwhile, Gohan is strapped in the Hyperbolic time chamber, pushing himself beyond his limit. sometimes pushing himself to his death. The Buu saga events play out (With Piccolo having his energy drained this time) Goku takes on Dabura, Vegeta turns Majin, kamikaze, Goten and Trunks learn fusion, Goku goes to stop Buu. his time is up. he must go back to the overworld. he didnt even get to see Gohan... Piccolo opens the HTC to see Gohan in peak form. He is dissapointed. "Get out." Piccolo exclaims. Gohan smirks and walks out, seeing the Goten and Trunks. "Weak." he mutters, as he leaves. Gohan steps out and meets Buu. Buu smirks POINT IS: Without that closure he got from killing Cell, and without that reassurance he got from Goku with the Father-Son Kamehameha, Gohan would essentially become an edgier version of Vegeta, or at least a more overly confident and cockier version of Ultimate Gohan. IF I GO ON ANY LONGER, I'LL GET SUED BY MASAKO X, IM OUT

And if he can get one from his own son ...he'll get it AND lecture him on the finer points while doing it, like he did in the HTC when training for Cell.
