Today I wanna talk about Dolores Umbridge and in particular why she was able to produce a patronus despite having what id call the ugliest heart in the wizarding world. For a woman who loves imposing misery, how is she even able to conjure the level of happiness required to even conjure a patronus.

Simply put, Umbridge will only produce a patronus if she's happy. Her perspective of being happy is to give kids hard time and seeing Muggle Borns being punished.

I was going to say this. Because a patronus is more than just a happy memory, otherwise any deatheater could perform one. It takes a pure of heart element, free of doing bad things, and enjoying them. When you look at Snape's ability to produce a patronus, it comes from his love for Lily, and the memories of the only time he was truly happy. With Delores, it not only comes from her ability to be in charge, and in full control. It comes from her self righteousness, and believing that she is doing the right thing. It's like a lot of religious people that commit horrible acts in the name of their God. We might view their actions as evil, but in their minds they are doing the right thing.

So I do think she gets genuine pleasure from making kids suffer. Education (and politics for that matter) is unfortunately a common field for functioning psychopaths to go into. They like the power and they like using it to cause children pain. She likes order, but it's far more an excuse to be able to abuse kids.

the thing is those who are evil don't see themselves as evil. Also I want to point out that it has to do with a pure emotion like love, for those who have no love in their hearts or no "pure" emotion can't conjure a patronus. It's about more than happiness.

Before watching this video. I have this theory, the fact that Umbridge's heart is very twisted have something to do with her ability to produce Patronus. For example, a good chunk of Death Eaters although they enjoy doing evil, the fact that they are conscious that they're doing evil despite enjoying it made them unable to produce Patronus. Umbridge is completely unaware that what she's doing is remotely wrong.

In the book when Umbridge's quill cut words into Harry's hand they healed up so he could could keep cutting them in again and again until eventually his hand stopped healing and Umbridge said "I think we can get the message to go deeper next time."

My question is WHY was Umbridge not punished by the law for her sending Dementors after Harry at the end of the fifth book? Sure, she was removed from Hogwarts and two years later she was sent to Azkaban for crimes against muggleborns, but I still question why was she never punished in the first place.

1:16 The reason why people (self included) hate Dolores more that Voldemort is actually quite simple. Reality. Voldemort is the type of evil only found in movies/books/comics. He is so evil through and through that he is non-sensical - almost cartoonish. Dolores, however, is more grounded. Most people have, at one time or another, run into the type of person who, given even the smallest modicum of authority, goes full tyrant - making life a living hell for those who 'dare' oppose them. And they do so in the name of the parent/teacher/school/company/government/religion/etc. that binds them together in the first place. They are morally wrong, but can justify their actions based on some interpretation of the the code of the body that gave them the authority. We all know that person. Dolores triggers that personal, real connection we had with that individual in our life, and we empathize with the characters under her thumb. That's why we hate her.

I think the fact the screen was splashed with pink tones while you were describing all her tyrannic acts, is quite telling about her ambiguous character. She was comfortable in her own skin, being a walking contradiction. mostly because color pink can be associated to childish/girlish innocence, yet, her heart was so inclined to the achievement of power and getting her way at all cost. So it is definitely why, as you said, she was living a life of joy and happiness and it's why she was able to produce a Patronus without exploding into instant combustion. Being cruel and merciless made her happy and the Patronus fuels from happy memories to the caster, so being vile produced in her stamina and happy hormones and that's why she was able to produce her Patronus. Let's hope she's not as skillful I'm wand less and non verbal casts, so she can't never scape from Azkaban by warding off dementors.

I thought the tale of the dark wizard who got eaten by maggots had that happen because his idea of a happy memory was something cruel and horrific. Maybe that isn't the case or Umbridge didn't quite reach that point. I was thinking her happy memory involved cats, and her patronus herself helped remind her of it. Her fondness for cats seems to be the only "normal" good thing about her.

In point of fact, if you look closely at the podium where she sat adjudicating in the Ministry, you can see her wand is atop the podium and her hand is resting atop the wand. Thus, it appears she didn't have an extraordinary power that allowed her a patronus without a wand.

It’s pretty interesting that specific type of magic doesn’t distinguish between types of happiness. That a happy feeling/thought which is caused from the harm of others can’t be seen differently than one that is from thoughts that most people would consider happy (friends/family, playing with a pet, falling in love, etc). But then again, happiness and joy are subjective so I can see what the magic doesn’t separate them but still fascinating

I totally agree with this analysis. I would add that once you master the patronus spell, it is not impossible to let it last more (as when Dumbledore or McGonagall use it as a messenger). But of course, it's not the case for Umbridge, outside some extraordinary circumstance

Just read the books again and I still don't know where the idea that you need a pure heart to produce a Patronus comes from. All it takes is a very happy memory, in Umbridge's case that would be a memory of her being a particularly nasty b*tch to someone. Unfortunately there are lots of people that think they are doing right but are evil gits that hurt people and they're very happy. When you think that cats are very independent creatures that you have to earn their love and trust...how is it that her patronus is a cat? Unless she is the cat, like Ysa in the Emperor's New Groove.
