as a Pole, I started to throw "kurwa" around ;D and I'm not even a linguist! first of all, Slavs have many different languages, and we do not understand each other's language better than, let's say, english speakers understand danish. second, protoslavic derived from protoindoeuropean. And yes, latin derived from italic branch of protoindoeuropean, but those branches are far from each other. and I guess there's more words in english similar to latin than among slavic languages. btw, polish for bear is "niedźwiedź" (don't bother trying to pronounce... also, you see, any resemblance to "ursusu"?), which derived from protoslavic medu-ědь which means "honey eater", so that part is at least true ;)

Patronuses aren't born of being good, they're born of good memories. That's why Umbridge could make one: she's evil, but that doesn't mean she hasn't got good memories. That's also why I don't think Voldy had a patronus at all. He just didn't have any good memories.

What I’m thinking about is: For a Patronus, you must conjure a happy memory, but wouldn’t Voldemort be able to make a Patronus, because it his eyes, death and pain is a happy memory, like for example, killing Lily and James, torturing Harry in GoF, etc. I feel like he would be able to make a Patronus with those “happy” memories??
@limiv5272
@limiv5272 Жыл бұрын
I would say he's more satisfied when he kills and tortures, and that a truly happy memory would be something like discovering he was a wizard
@alpinefool8814

The idea of a bear as a villain, is strange to me. I've always thought of bears as caring, respectful animals. Someone who is represented by a bear should be strong willed but also cares about others and has the power to protect them. Voldemort is too cowardly selfish and evil to be a bear. Edit: I didn't mean that bears aren't dangerous to humans. I'm just saying that in the culture I grew up with, dangerous animals like bears and wolves were associated with virtues rather than being villains. The video originally talks about bears in the context of certain European myths. That culture uses bears as a symbol of evil, the culture in some, if not most native American tribes used bears as a more positive symbol. Without metaphor bears are a dangerous animal who are usually kind to their young, which makes them more dangerous to people.

Interesting fact: the Arctic and Antarctic regions of the planet are essentially named "bears" and "away from bears" because the North Star is part of the Ursa Minor (little bear) constellation. Ursa Minor drops below the horizon at 10°S, and Ursa Major drops at 30°S, so both are invisible from the antarctic South Pole. The fact that polar bears are in the Arctic but not the Antarctic is a coincidence.

Just a thought for you since Hogwarts is in Scotland, maybe Voldemort's patronus would be the Gaelic mythology opposing counterpart to stag. In druidic legend Dagda and Rhita Gawr are enemies who often battle using the form of animals with noble Dagda taking the form of a stag and power hungry Rhita Gawr using the form of a boar. There are a lot of interesting parallels.

Voldemort’s Patronus is obviously a Cockroach. It reflects his meager beginnings, his unyielding determination, his attraction to the Dark, his destructive nature, his unreal penchant for survival, his ability to come out on top in almost any environment, his parasitical nature, and his horrifying appearance. Interestingly enough, it also reflects Voldemort’s surprising ability to fly, as one doesn’t usually expect a cockroach to fly until it really happens and because most cockroaches can’t fly, making those that can do so special. It would also be hilarious for Voldemort to expect for something like a Dragon or a Runespoor or Basilisk to pop out of his wand when he first casted the spell, only to see a measly cockroach. I can only imagine the temper tantrum at having a mere non-magical insect for his Patronus.

Yes, what was said in the video was wrong. However, Latin and Slavic languages are still all descended from Proto-indo-european, the parent of most european languages (and many others), so it would not be unfathomable that the original word for bear did sound similar to ursus.
@marina.chayka

Came here to say just that! Slavic languages and Latin are Indo-European languages so they have a common "ancestor", slavic languages are in no way *descended* from Latin. Other Indo-European languages: German, Punjabi, Persian. The languages that descend from Latin are the so-call, well, Latin (or Romance) languages like Portuguese, Spanish and French.

We, Hungarians, call bears "medve". In Serbian, (and probably something similar in Croatian, Slovakian etc.) they're called "medved". I was told that we were so scared of bears that we didn't bother to come up with a name for them, just took it from our neighbouring Slavic peoples, and called it a day. I find this interesting, because I have studied linguistics, makes sense, since "bear" used to be tabu, in the context of this video. Also also, actually actually, Pokémon X makes so much sense now. First of all awesome theory, as always! Second of all, I'm gonna nitpick a little :D while it's true we (I'm a Finn btw) stopped using the true name of the bear we never forgot it. We just didn't use it for a long time. I see how this can be confusing to others because english has only one word for bear (I think?) and we have a lot. The original word for bear in finnish is karhu and some replacements are otso, kontio, nalle, mesikämmen, metsän kuningas etc. They all translate to bear sooo :D Also bear=mesikämmen=honeypalm. I think it's cute. Sorry I'm going off tracks a bit. We started using the word karhu again after the catholics took over and our believes started to fade. But yeah this doesn't really affect the theory it's just something I wanted to throw out there. Love your videos! (Sorry for any errors in my grammar etc. english is my third language hehh)

The most common is Karhu (Rough one) others are Kontio, Kouki, Kouko or Kouvo (evil entity or ghost), Kultaherra (golden master), Metsän kulta (Gold of the forest), Metsän kuningas (king of the forest), Metsän omena (Apple of the forest), Mesikämmen (which is the cutest, honey-palm). Ohto and Otso are names for the bear that apparently are not euphemisms in Finnish language. It is interesting how feared the bear was trough history.
