ALL of Umbridge's RULES at Hogwarts - Harry Potter Explained

Hey everyone, welcome to another installment of Harry Potter Theory. In this video, we’re going to be discussing everyone’s FAVOURITE character: Dolores Umbridge.
As we know, in the 1995-1996 school year, the Ministry of Magic put out a statement expressing that they were unimpressed with the slipping standards of Hogwarts. This was of course driven by Fudge who was blinded by fear, and in utter denial that the Dark Lord Voldemort had returned. Dumbledore repeatedly tried to convince Fudge of the truth, but each attempt was dismissed and he was subsequently stripped of his title as Headmaster at Hogwarts.
In place of Dumbledore, the ministry of magic appointed Dolores Umbridge, who, in that same school year, worked as the Defence against the Dark Arts professor, as well as the Hogwarts high inquisitor. Almost immediately, Umbridge instated 'Educational Decrees' which are laws created by the Ministry of Magic that enforce standards at the school. You may remember Filch hammering these up on the walls in the film. With that said, here's a full list of all of her decrees/rules.

You know, if anyone had bothered to read these, they could have trolled Umbridge so hard. Oh, all writings by half-bloods are banned? Well, guess half-bloods can't do any written assignments, then. We'll ignore anything written by Snape, since most people don't know he's a half-blood, but all these educational decrees? Well, sorry Dolores, but you're a half-blood, which means those are all contraband. Oh, all groups of 3 or more students that gather regularly are disbanded? You know where three or more students gather every day? Classes. Also, lunch. Sure, we could say lunch is disbanded, but it's more fun if we interpret that as meaning the group itself is dissolved, rather than the meetings. Why? Well, because that means _The Student Body of Hogwarts_ is disbanded. Oh, also teachers are banned from giving information "not strictly related to the subjects they are paid to teach". Yes, well, I'm very sorry to tell you this, High Inquisitor, but I _do_ know of a teacher violating that. You see, Professor Umbridge has been giving out all these notices that have nothing to do with Defense Against the Dark Arts. Yes, yes, I _know_ she has other duties at Hogwarts, but the rule is quite clear. She's not paid to _teach_ any of those subjects, now is she? You don't like me telling you that you're breaking your own stupid rules? Well, I'm very sorry, however No. 136 was quite clear that I must report _all_ violations.

Voldy he at least respects you fighting back while Umbridge represses such things and strictly punishes you for fighting back. She also uses torture far more frequently then Voldy. Generally he will simply kill you which is more respectful to me. Finally: Umbridge is so Evil she can look a Basilisk in the eyes and survive. To be fair some of those decrees weren't unreasonable. Keep your pets in your house and not wandering the school. Use your brooms only in designated areas. Magic exist outside the physical realm of possibility hence why things like the force are considered science not magic as it manipulates an element found within the boundaries of reality (of the star wars universe) called medichlorians which is in all living things.

Processes occur at the hands of a sorcerer when they wouldn't have otherwise been spontaneous. She was fully human. In the wizarding half breed means an offspring of two different magical species one being human. A half blood is fully human and excepted by more than 97% percent of the Wizarding community except for the worst zealots which were very few. Half bloods were allowed to stay at Hogwarts but were punished more harshly when Voldemort took over. Those were the ones that spoke out and didn’t try to disown their muggle family.

A surprising number of these were actually sensible, like banning red howlers and attempting to curtail the number of pranks. Even some of the restrictions on clubs are not too dissimilar to the ones placed on clubs by every American high school IRL. IRL, if you wanted to make a club you often had to get it cleared by the staff. Even if you didn't need approval to nominally create the club, you would still need permission to use the school's grounds to even be able to meet. And in a parallel to what ultimately happened to Dumbledore's Army, if you are caught on school grounds (IRL) without permission, you risk having the police called on you. Of course, most of the rest were quite bonkers. All in all, I suppose it's like McGonagall said: "it's not rules that I oppose, it's your medieval methods".

The High Inquisitor was an absolutely ridiculous idea. I would pretty much return to the rules in place before Umbridge came but I would forbid bullying. Great video! I truly dislike Umbridge the most, even more then Voldemort. Yes Voldemort is evil and murderous, but she's just as evil or even more so in different ways. I remember when reading the 5th book and anytime she did anything I slammed my book, clenched my fists, sighed and if it was at a particularly frustrating part I would pace until calm. They casted Imelda Staunton perfectly for Umbridge. When I saw the movie and she first did her little interruption I jumped up from my seat and yelled an obscenity at the screen.
