You’re right about winter tires. I’ve lived in Canada’s snow belt areas all my life and over the last 50 years I have owned and driven rear wheel drive, front wheel drive, all wheel drive and 4 wheel drive. Two things have become very apparent, good winter tires are a must and winter tires on all four wheels is required. I have driven in the worst conditions imaginable and have done so with confidence. My biggest fear has always been “the other guy”, the one ill equipped to cope with the conditions due to lack of proper tires, regardless of the type of drive they have.

I've got a 2014 Hyundai ix35, but it's made in Korea (all Hyundais and Kias in New Zealand come from Korea as far as I know). It's very reliable and nothing has ever gone wrong with it, and the fuel economy is pretty good (I don't drive it very hard, but I don't baby it). Still on original tyres and brakes with 81,000km on the clock. It's very well built and only has a slight creaking in some plastic in the console (solved by turning the stereo up). Hyundai and Kia are vey popular in New Zealand and there are plenty of old ones still driving around. I've never heard of any problems with them over here, apart from the interior trim being crap on the old models.

5:33 Scotty is 100% correct about snow tires. I grew up in Alaska. Lived there 32 years before moving to Texas. Years ago, I had a Ford Escort-ONE wheel drive (front wheel drive). I drove that thing delivering newspapers in all kinds of snow. I had good snow tires, and I kept a snow shovel in the back. Once or twice I got stuck in deep snow and was able to dig myself out with the shovel and drive away. Remember this saying about 4WD and AWD that my friends and I had back then, it can save your butt. “If you get stuck in 2WD, you can get out by switching into 4WD. If you get stuck in 4WD or AWD, you can get out BY CALLING A TOW TRUCK!” It’s more about your tires-and mostly about your driving skill-than about your drive system.
@totallyfrozen
@totallyfrozen 2 жыл бұрын
@David Moore I can’t imagine a scenario where studded tires would be necessary in Texas. The worst I’ve seen it here was the deep freeze in 2021. That was a one-off. Usually if it gets cold enough to ice up the roads, it only lasts for a matter of hours. Even then it’s a pretty rare event. I’d be surprised if you can even buy studded tires down here. Even in Anchorage, there’s a season for them and you have to have them off the car by May. The studs do tear up asphalt over time. I have no experience with rubber studs. To me rubber studs to metal studs sounds like Glamping to camping. Hard to take that seriously. LOL!

Hey Scotty just wanted to say you’re doing some great work! I have two issues on my first car and high milage hero a 09’ Pontiac G6 GT 3.5 V6 with 160k miles on her (originally bought at 82k mi). I recently had a remaned transmission put in about 10k miles ago to keep her going through this crazy inflated car market. (Also I accidentally serviced it incorrectly which left it three quarts low on ATF when I put it back together… oops) I’ve noticed that the last two oil changes I have had an increasing amount of oil seepage seeming to come from the top of the engine. It’s not enough to drip on the garage floor yet. I have been thinking of using your recommended oil system cleaner because I have also noticed that the oil when I change it out every 3,000-5,000 miles has been a lot more dirty and smelling very burnt. Gas milage has dropped pretty much 8-9 mpg during that time as well. She’s still running very well but I’m getting the suspicion that the engine is beginning to wear out due to her age. Should I use the oil system cleaner and see if it helps or could it possibly make the seepage worse by cleaning the deposits that may be keeping it from leaking?

I have a 93 Honda Accord EX Coup and my car broke down on an onramp to an interstate freeway. When I finally got my car to the mechanics. I told them that we change the fuel relay about 11 years ago. Well, they found that the the main relay under the dash was the problem and that main relay includes the fuel relay. I hope this new relay will give me another 11 years before it breaks again. Also just for the heck of it, since I couldn't remember when I last changed the fuel filter, I told the mechanics to change that too. Now the car is running just fine.

That is bad news, Scotty. I'm sorry for those companies: their workers, their dealers, and their mechanics. I don't know when the first ones showed trouble, but as soon as they knew something was wrong, they should've 'nipped it in the bud' and retooled.

Good afternoon Scotty, and everyone else in the comments! I have a question: I am looking to buy my first car in a few months, and I just want something fuel efficient and reliable. I am definitely looking at the Toyota and Honda cars, but I have noticed that Ford Focuses are usually a lot cheaper, and they usually have 100k miles versus the 150-200k that the Toyota/Honda ones have. Are the Ford Focuses so cheap because they suck, or because there is way more supply than demand? Should I look at Ford Focuses or stick to Toyota/Honda? Thank you guys, I hope you have a good weekend.

If I was looking for an SUV project I think I would look for an older Ford Explorer with the 4.6. As long as it hasn't been wrecked you can do well with those. Parts are very available and don't cost a fortune. Plus they are simple and easy to work on compared to an SUV today.
@robc7323
@robc7323 2 жыл бұрын
The 4.6 Explorers are nice b/c they have all of the timing components on the front of the engine and they can be replaced with the engine in the vehicle. I have a 2005 Mountaineer (Explorer) with the 4.0 SOHC. I had to pull the engine at ~240k to replace the timing chain/guides. Unfortunately, the 4.0 SOHC has timing components in the front and back of the engine necessitating either an engine pull or transmission drop and special tools are needed for timing. All Explorers up to 2010 were built on a frame so they are sturdy vehicles. Just make sure to check the transmission (5R55S)... If you have hesitation into reverse or flared shifting, you will probably need to replace solenoids and/or valve body. Trans work on these vehicles is usually not too expensive but good to negotiate price. They 4.6 and 4.0 SOHC Explorers can be solid budget SUVs especially if you can swing a wrench since parts are relatively cheap... the older 4.0 OHV Explorers can be solid as well and are easy to work on.
@komradkolonel
@komradkolonel 2 жыл бұрын
@@robc7323 Another bad thing about the 4.0 is that if someone was using their Explorer for towing or if they were loading it down those V-6 engines would wear out faster. If someone has been doing that when that engine gets to around 150,000 miles the rings and bearings are going to be well worn and it's going to be burning oil. The good thing is you can get a factory reman 4.6 or transmission for not a lot of money and they come with a warranty.
