There is NO songwriting teams better than Greenaway/Cook and Goffin/King. This is the cream of pop genius. The melodies are beautiful, the harmonies take to the stratosphere, and a killer string arrangement AND a great lead vocal from the one and only Tony Burrows. Sublime.

It was Pete Nelson on lead here. Tony Burrows was never the lead singer of White Plains. Ricky Wolff and Pete Nelson were the two main vocalists of White Plains. To classify this as bubblegum music is to misunderstand the nature of music. Very melodic, which somehow always sounds as fresh today as it did 50 years ago. Very special memories are triggered hearing this.
@angusmecoatup98492 жыл бұрын
Their harmonies were outstanding, pity they had such a short chart career. I've got you on my mind was my favourite, also loved the B side Today I killed a man I didn't know 👍
@pauldunn812 жыл бұрын
@@angusmecoatup9849 Haven't heard of that tune, will look it up. Two of the line up were in the original Brotherhood, virtually at the same time as White Plains, and also one of these two was in Jonathan and David (had a couple of mid to late 60's hits) and the other one was in the Flowerpot Men (lets go to San Francisco) - can't imagine such crossovers in bands happening these days. Music then had a much richer and experimental nature to it, whereas a lot (though not all) of current music seems shallow, dull and "pre-digested". In my opinion.
@angusmecoatup98492 жыл бұрын
@@pauldunn81 totally agree Paul. It was quite amazing back then how many guys chopped and changed bands, and why not eh? I'm a fan of harmonies and I loved the Hollies and Marmalade for that reason.
@pauldunn812 жыл бұрын
@@angusmecoatup9849 Yes I particularly always enjoy hearing Lovin Things by Marmalade and the lead singer in the Hollies had a very distinctive clear voice. I wonder why present day music just doesn't have the same calibre of singer, or song. Still they can all be still heard thanks to youtube.

Glorious song! Surprisingly it struggled a little to climb the UK chart, eventually peaking at No.17 and spending four weeks in the Top 20. Maybe it was overshadowed by its predecessor 'My Baby Loves Lovin' ', a No.9 hit from just two months before. White Plains' backing vocals were 'spot on', complementing the lead singer perfectly.

Funny how oldies stations always play 'My Baby Loves Lovin'" when White Plains feature, but to me this was every bit as good. Session supremo Tony Burrows doing the business again on lead vocals - he truly was everywhere back in the day. I truly hadn't heard this for years until I logged in tonight. So good, it's almost edible. Bubblegum in all its glory.

Ricky and Pete were the main vocalists until early 1971, then it was mainly Pete. I don’t know how Ricky’s history as a main vocalist got lost, but it did. He sang lead on about 10 tracks. Brent Carter and Tony Hall replaced Ricky on sax and flute in ‘71, not ‘73.
