Scrappy in his prime. The absolute voice of the 1920's who could turn any sing into a hit. Just my impression. 🐸

Not only is this music a treasure but so are the labels! Beautiful art work and historical information. I’m sitting listening and really appreciating both. Thanks!

Thank You Barbara!! I have always LOVED this Orchestra, When I was a kid a WONDERFUL Lady in Dardanelle Arkansas, knew I always wanted 78 rpm records, and walked across the street carrying a box with a bunch of them in it! "Weep No More My Mammy" -"Leave Me With A Smile" - Carl Fenton's Orchestra was among the first Brunswick records I ever owned, been hooked on this great Orchestra, It was later when I found out it was actually Walter "Gus" Haenschen who was the actual leader of this band! His Brunswick, Supertone & Q.R.S records or at least the records under Fenton's name are just the best! I Scrappy Lambert makes is AWESOME!!

Carl Fenton's band and Harold 'Scrappy' Lambert are absolutely glorious in this scrumptious performance. This is so great in every possible way, both orchestrally and vocally. Thank you so much for sharing this precious performance, I love, love this!

Amazing dance tempo, extremely rich orchestration, and this is supposed to be a Dime store band??? Really I wish every well established dance band of this period could present such depth in their respective recordings!!!! Thank you for sharing, and have a happy /healthy/balanced new year

It is indeed a great record on a dime store label. However, I wouldn’t consider this a dime store band since the recording was made by Gennett , a few years after the Carl Fenton orchestra left Brunswick.

The arrangement is very similar to the Al Goodman cut on Brunswick (which I suspect was really staffed by a lot of sidemen that Brunswick happened to have around). Might well have been a stock arrangement, with different embellishments by the different bands.

@@mamemu Usually dime store bands are defined by the lack of stringed instruments.

This was played in a lower key than the Al Goodman recording. I enjoyed the vocalist on this record.

I'm glad you liked my comment. And of course, I'm asking politely if you have a sig 2 of this beautiful SUPERTONE record. It's also a fantastic orchestra. Sam Lanin's University Orchestra with Or What Have You. I have a lot of these (Supertone recorded 90% of Carl Fenton). I can send it to you if you want?

Just a theory, but the metallophone attacks at 0:52 are REALLY crisp - almost "too good" for a dime store record. It's marked as being an RCA recording, and this is (I think) before the Victor acquisition. RCA-Victor issued some REALLY fine recordings sporadically from 1932-1934 (the "early hi-fi" stuff), using a heavily modified WE Model 1 cutter that could run all the way out to 10kHz. I was under the impression that there wasn't any commercial hardware that could pull this off, reliably, until 1932. I'm wondering if RCA was playing with something earlier than that, and they offset the costs of R&D by selling metal masters on-the-cheap to dime store labels like Supertone.

I'm sorry you can't send the other side of this record. I have 24 titles from the University Orchestra - all on Supertone.. I can send them all to you as audio in exchange for the other side of this record. Best Regards D. Markiewicz
