Common Stages of Reaction for the song 'Hi Ren' by Ren: This looks creepy. Pig mask, ha. Guitar sounds nice. Nylon strings. Is this live? Oh he’s singing. Falsetto. I did not expect that. Will the whole song be like this? Okay, he’s rapping now. Cool. He's good. Has anyone noticed he looks like Tommy Shelby? This guy is scary. Now he seems nice. Oh I see what he’s doing. This is interesting, it's like Eminem or Plan B. This is intense. Time has lost its meaning. The mean guy is a jerk. This is INTENSE! Make it stop, I need to cry a bit. I haven’t blinked or taken a breath in four minutes. OMG THERE GOES THE 4TH WALL!!! How did he know what I was thinking? YES! You tell him Ren. You are a genius! Okay, scary just guy got way scarier. (You didn't know it was the devil, you would have dressed properly.) The hopium has arrived and I am so here for it. 'Loosen the noose on the rope'. ... HOLY SHITBALLS HE CAN SING!!! Damn, he can really sing. OOO-OO-OO-OO-OO-... (your head bobs, tears in your eyes, you get it now) I need some time to be still, wait there's more? He's talking now and peering into my soul. I was not expecting to feel this much. That was the longest nine minutes that has ever passed instantly. (you sit in deafening silence as you contemplate existence) "Good art makes you think about the art, great art makes you think about your life."

Renegade here! Yes, this rabbit hole is deep, Sick Boi , Chalk Outlines (live), How to be Me (live) and Suicide are all good choices for more of his mental health message. Tale of Jenny and Screech (Full) is great for his bardcore style of storytelling. The Money Game trilogy is great for showcasing his drive to bring awareness to the consequences of greed and consumerism run amok. Eden is more a visually compelling poetic speech/poem retelling the story of Adam and Eve and not really a song, but many of us Ren fans, both religious and non-religious, find the final message inspiring.

Although the song touches on mental illness, it's actually about the human condition generally, as the end section makes abundantly clear and which Ren himself has said. With Ren, you'll soon realise that there's metaphor after metaphor and double or triple meaning after double or triple meaning, probably with a meta metaphor, or two, hovering over the whole creation. To take him too literally is to sort of miss the point. His lyricism is truly world-class! Sinead O'Connor, in a post not long before she died, effectively said, bin all existing music. Now it's just 'Before Ren and After Ren'! She even emphasised that she was including artists like Dylan in this. :)

I know right, then again, what should we expect from someone so delusional and unhinged as this reactor, that he puts bible verses sprinkled in through the reaction, so he can relate it and everything in his life apparently, to his sky daddy and zombie son that no doubt he talks about ever waking second of his miserable life.

If this is your 1st Ren reaction I'm subbing in ... in hopes there'll be more. Woohoo!!!!! Ren has a horrible medical history of mis-diagnosis and incorrect medications that really messed with his mind. He tried all traditional medical options, then went to holistic, herbal, religious, spiritual etc. At it's worst he decided it must be demonic because there were no other untried options... after almost a decade they discovered it was Lyme disease. Ren's music, like Hi Ren, collected a group of music lovers but also the hidden, broken, damaged, hurt, ignored or just different people who have come together in a community of sorts. Ren is just a nice guy, a thoughtful poet, a great artist and someone who never quit, and never gave in to the dark. Welcome to the world of Ren.

@@Tortex88 ...I don't think the OP's take was undermining at all, In fact I would say yours is a bit on the myopic side. Which is fine if your stating that's what the song meant to you personally, most of Ren's songs, and IMO most good artists songs, are meant for the listener to interpret and take what meaning out of it that best suits them. This song has many messages with a multitude of layers to each, but if one had to pick a single overall message I would say it's a struggle with our inner demon who is always our biggest critique and sewing doubt every chance it gets. No doubt he will absolutely ruin Eden and totally miss the point, and for absolutely sure will drone on and on through it or after it, about his delusional and dangerous beliefs. While I hope he never calls himself a Ren fan or give a single shite about what he watches next, it's probably not great that you tell new fans of Ren what their "next song should be". So what if that's the steps other fans took, it's not your path to take, I understand one can be a helpful guide on others journey, but that ain't the way to do it. That attitude is exactly what turns off a lot of potential fans of artists like NF and Tool, insistent fans that demand or tell people what they need to do next and losing their minds if the reactor veered off the correct order, or watched the wrong video. I'm not saying you're being that extreme, it's just a slippery slope that can easily evolve, when too many people start suggesting stuff like that.

It is not only a great depiction of the angel and devil on your shoulder, but a very typical day in the mind of someone not just battling mental illness, but also of a person fighting their own negative thoughts, or "dark" side. It can show the eternal battle of humans to choose their path in life, whether it be in goodness or darkness. I also like how he explains at the end that we are not evil or angelic but have been given the gift/curse of free will and navigating that can be difficult. I just love it. As an artist his range is so vast, from very dark songs pointing out the sad and negative things in the world, to beautiful and meaningful songs, to hip hop / rap, more songs giving glimpses into what it is like to deal with mental struggles and illness, to cover songs and silliness. One of my very favorite videos of his is not music at all. It is when he hit 1,000,000 subscribers he put out a video just speaking to people and it made me a fan of his as a person for life. It's just beautiful.

What genre of music Ren is? Yes! lol. He does every genre and does them all brilliantly. He raps like a rap god, scats and beatboxes brilliantly. His vocals are incredible,! Capable of multiple voices, styles and tones. He plays about a dozen instruments well. Half of them RIDICULOUSLY well! All self-taught! He's a top-notch producer. He lays down all his own music/beats/audio. He directs most of his own videos. Many of which, like Hi Ren, are recorded live, in a single take! His songwriting is world-class! Especially his lyricism! Ren's a poet really and a bloody good one at that! It sounds like a 'jack of all trades, master of none' situation. It isn't. It's a 'jack of all trades, master of all trades situation! :) Ren's a ridiculously diverse and talented musician/singer/songwriter/producer and he never misses, no matter the genre! A musical genius! A once in a generation talent! What's more, he does it all despite suffering from 2 extremely debilitating, chronic illnesses and a whole host of associated conditions and illnesses. He's in near constant pain. Even more, he does it all as a fully independent artist! No label. No financial backing. No PR machine. No management. Just raw talent! Every label under the Sun has tried to sign Ren. He's turned them all down! With Ren it really is all about the music! People fall in love with Ren's incredible music and end up falling in love with Ren himself. He's an incredible human being, with a great perspective on the World. Highly intelligent, profound, full of empathy and compassion, wise beyond his years, yet incredibly down to earth, honest and open and with a wicked sense of humour! If you continue down the rabbit hole, you'll see what I mean. :) tl/dr - Ren's great! Ren's music is great! Definitely react to more Ren! Interesting. When I first heard this song, I did not think it came from a place of mental illness, so much. If you really listen to the words, it's mostly just about battling one's inner-critic, then learning to go with the flow so to speak. I thought Ren demonstrated that brilliantly. Even though what Ren says at the end about his illness and psychosis is basically true (insert long story about years of suffering with misdiagnosed Lyme disease and the aftermath), he has also said that this song is not about mental illness, but about the human condition in general. To me that was clear. I think most people's minds do work this way. Most of us experience some degree of this "psychological warfare" and find this song relatable in some way. Also, Ren is agnostic, but likes to use religious stories and imagery metaphorically. I have seen that Christian reactors often focus in on Ren's religious references in this song, and sometimes miss his actual message. Anyway, this song demonstrates just a few of Ren's many talents. Have fun diving down the Rabbit Hole. Ren is an artist through and through.

Have another listen and see if you come to a similar conclusion. Welcome and I hope you come along for the ride. Ren does not fit into any genre and yet he can perform just about any genre. He's fun, he's philosophical, he has Shakespearian style tragedy in a trilogy called The Tale of Jenny and Screech. He does a lot of one-take videos just because...just because he can and he is great at it. Ren does all of this as he suffers from residual side effects of a long undiagnosed Lyme Disease. Also...your kinda not getting the message here. The 2 sides of his subconscious were talking...no one 'won' the battle...it was a dance...but as far as the song is concerned hope won out in the end and when he stood up the 'devil' side of his subconscious tried to come out right after the first real singing part but it didn't and his 'light' side took over til the end. The only reason he invokes God here is to show that despair and hope are eternal and will always be part of the human experience. He isn't talking about a literal God. Since a literal God he knows...like every smart person does...is all shit we made up.

That couldn't be true. I'd survived so much shit and still achieved some success. How could I possibly be what I was so sure that I was not?!? It takes FRIENDS who know- and anyone else that cares- to point it out. Repeatedly. Against your will. Only the most persistent, annoying, concerted friend/family groups can keep you among us. One way or another, those are the people that will save you. I owe several friends and a couple of dogs my life. The first friend to save me was a dog. The rest have ideas about where they are in that list.

So glad you found Ren! Welcome to KZbin also. As a fellow reactor, I was blown away by this. Now I'm addicted to Ren! I've never been a "Rap" fan, but he is much more than that. Anyway, If I can ever help, feel free to reach out, I have some tips to help you get your views up even more. Example, at the end of your title, and the first sentence of your description, (Which should copy exactly what the title is) use 3 #hashtag words. Since you're doing music reactions, I would suggest #reaction #artistsname #songtitle OR #yourchannelname. As you start typing in the hashtags, you will get a pop up that shows you the best ones, by the total # of videos that use that specific #. Also, use as many Keywords as possible in the first 3 sentences of your description (So it still makes sense) Ex: "First Ever Ren Reaction - Because Isacc Reacts #reaction #ren" You can get creative with these, titles are limited, so if you use VidIQ, you can get some good title suggestions. Anyway, enjoy meeting Ren, You MUST DO "The Tale of Jenny & Screech" FULL TRILOGY next! He is a storyteller like you've never experienced before. DEEP, DARK, INSANELY TALENTED! ALL LIVE, ALL 1 TAKE. GENIUS!! Cheers, Jennifer/The Speak Easy Lounge

The fact he didn't recognize that this is a universal human struggle should tell you how much his brain has turned to mashed potatoes from too much god think. Anyone that can't relate to real world human experiences such as Hi Ren, drops bible verses everywhere and can't shut the f**k up about something extremely personal, ones own faith, is a dangerous and unhinged person, trust me, stay far far away from this guy. This is the type of guy you'll see running some extremist Christian separatists camp like in Waco Texas, convincing all the females over 12 that they must take his seed, and all the men that he is god's vessel, with the whole thing ending in a shoot out with authorities or a mass suicide. I'm totally not joking either, look in his eyes, pure evil.

The look on Isaac‘s face halfway through when we all realize we all know nothing about music and the creative process in the shadow of Ren. He is on another level.
@albamartinez4987 Жыл бұрын
Funnily enough, he doesn't mention 'Christ'. He mentions 'hope' he mentions the 'feeling u get when u loosen the noose on the rope'. He is only using religion here as a metaphor as he says at the end 'it is this eternal dance that separates human beings from angels, from demons, from Gods' because we always think of ourselves as having a 'devil on our shoulder' or having an angel protecting us or feeling above everyone else as a god. We are humans. We make mistakes, we go through problems and challenges and we are not invincible or invulnerable. We shouldn't feel like we need to be perfect. We must accept that we have both dark and light within us and learn to live with that in order to be healthy mentally. This is one of the things he is trying to say using religion as a conduit. Ren is actually agnostic in real life even though he uses religion a fair amount in his music. Also...remember that many of us are not religious, or want to be or are of different religions. The World is a big place.
@becauseisaac Жыл бұрын
I see no difference between “hope” or “the feeling when you loosen the noose on your neck” and Jesus because he saved me from my sin deserving of death. I’m not religious either, I just believe in the one who created me and listen to what he says. Do you know where you’re going after you die?
@debrashrider4062 Жыл бұрын
@@becauseisaac i have noticed you repeat randomly the question of does the person know where they go when they die? That is not an answerable question. No one KNOWS, besides God. Do not fear Death dear. Its the natural conclusion to your life.

I found it very interesting that you immediately and exclusively interpreted this piece as about someone with mental illness. REN isn’t singing about someone who's mentally ill, he’s singing about the inner demons within us all. We all have that voice inside of us who is casting doubts and using our own logical thoughts that cause us to question everything about ourselves. Bad ren is the one who convinces us to doubt ourselves enough to throw a rope over a high branch and place the noose around our neck, while it’s our better, healthier self who is “the voice that you hear when you loosen the noose on the rope". We all carry both of those voices within us, and it’s curious that you only recognize that as existing in someone who is mentally ill. If you’ve never heard that dark voice with you, God bless, you are clearly one of a kind. But as Ren says quite eloquently at the end of the video, there’s no need to act like an angel or a god, we are all human beings.

Ren has said many times, his lyrics/songs are left open to an individuals interpretation and he enjoys hearing peoples different takes on his songs.
@briankeniry219 Жыл бұрын
I disagree. To me, he's explaining a psychotic episode. At the beginning the 'other' explains that it's been a while since he visited and normal Ren seems nervous and anxious, and it proceeds from there. Now ren has had psychotic illness and he seems to have comes to terms with it. However, it's open to us to interpret it how we want and maybe I don't think everyone has that internal voice that creates, I don't for instance.

I always hate it when reactors turn on closed captioning on Ren. IT NEVER gets it right. Ren nicely provides the lyrics in the description or in a tagged post. But he enunciates so well, that you really don't need them. Plus, most of Ren's stuff, you can listen to multiple times, and hear something new. Seriously. Don't turn on Closed Captioning on future Ren songs. Please. And looking down to read them, distracts from the amazing videos that Ren puts out. EDIT: Ahh, I typed this early on. I see you shut them off right after I was whining. LOL Thank you. GREAT reaction. HUGE rabbit hole to go down. You will find Ren to be SO multi faceted.

I think everyone has that internal struggle where you feel you are not good enough. But for people with depression and anxiety etc. that evil voice inside you are sometimes overpowering. You should really dive deeper into Ren, all his music is so good and touches on some heavy topics.

Late to the party and welcome to the Renegades. :) Ren has helped so many of us with chronic illness and mental health issues. I hope you delve deeper into his catelog, he is not religious, he just likes to use the religious iconography as a metaphor for what we go through as humans. Plus a lot of his music is pure good fun. It's not all heavy, but when Ren goes heavy, he's astonishing!

You asked if Hi Ren is a real depiction of what mental illness is like, and I can affirm that it is. Not precisely everyone’s experience of course, as mental illness manifests differently, depending on the type and nature of the illness, and unique person experiencing it. My older brother battled with Paranoid Schizophrenia and he heard voices, inside and outside his head for most of his life. We would talk about it sometimes and he would try to explain what it was like…in his case, he not only had the internal dialogue going on, but also experienced physical images (seemingly outside himself) who talked to him as well. He told me that he saw and heard them just as clearly as he could see and hear me, and that those images seemed every bit as real. Even with medication and treatment, it was hard for him to distinguish reality vs illness at times and everyday was a struggle. I’m a very empathetic person and it is pretty easy for me to put myself in someone else’s “shoes”, and to see a situation though their perspective. I couldn’t do this with my brother’s mental illness though…no matter how much I wanted to understand, my life perception did allow me to do so. Think about it….you or I might see crazy stuff in movies and it seems real, but we know it’s not reality. But he’d see crazy stuff, just like in the movies, that seemed real but wasn’t, and yet it was still HIS reality. The first time I saw Hi Ren, I cried, because Ren was able to help me finally see and experience a little of what his mental struggles could be like.
