In this deeply reflective reaction video, Atma Clinic's Integrative Therapist, David Lovely, gets into the powerful and raw lyrics of Ren's "Hi Ren," providing a therapeutic perspective on the song's exploration of internal battles, mental health, and the universal struggle between light and darkness. By closing his eyes and fully immersing himself in the experience, David offers genuine insights into the hero's journey and the wounded healer archetype, emphasizing the importance of mental well-being, self-reflection, and finding support during challenging times. His vulnerability and heartfelt reactions make this video a powerful connection point for viewers who seek more than just a typical reaction.

My foundation was shook 2 1/2 years ago when my son passed away suddenly. It caused ripples in my reality that physically shook me to the point where my Apendix failed, we lost our house, shut down my business, my wife resigned. One of my children started experiencing suicidal ideations. Our PTSD symptoms hit so hard, my wife and I now struggle with Agoraphobia, Catstrophic thinking, and have basically had to start all over again. I am now seeing a PTSD specialist and a counselor, a grieving group, along with having to go through dietary adjustments due to lack of apetite.. I go in and out of feeling insane. The triggers, flashbacks, anxiety, memory loss, and physical ticks have become a regular experience for me. Ren's perspective gives me sanity, knowing others go through similar experiences, and give me hope. Not sure how it will take till I stabilize again, but I feel like I'm making progress.

Hang in there. All is not lost. I know those are cliches, but when I lost my dad early last year and found Ren, just seeing how he touched people’s lives helped me hold on and remember to value my life and how I’m connected to others, even when I’d forget and think i just couldn’t go on. Hang on to hope and my music that soothes your soul. I truly hope things get better for you. 🤘🏼🎧🤟🏼

I think that's the true gift of his songs - and even him speaking on Instagram and stuff - that no matter where you are hope exists because just a little bit of research will show you just how tortured HE was and he made it on the other side. My sister has a way of saying things to me that finally make certain things click. I know the serenity prayer for a long time. "Accept the things we cannot change." Very hard for me to do that sometimes. The fact that Ren mentioned this as a dance instead of something I'll overcome just made it click. Plus the victim/student perspective though I know I'm a slow study at life. Hang in there. We know from Ren's experience that brighter days are ahead. One other thing that always stuck with me was that I had a teacher that used to tell us that suicide was a permanent solution to a temporary problem. I'm 53 years old and that was in Middle School and I never forgot it.

I often wonder what the therapists and doctors who treated Ren think now, knowing that his illness was actually triggered by Lyme disease. So much of his medical story seems to be doctors building on previous diagnosis and and unfortunate lack of time. I went through a similar medical situation with a family member who was deemed "untreatable" by a doctor because she wouldn't follow his treatment protocol even though it was making her worse. Every doctor she saw afterwards, at some point referred to her "unwillingness" to follow treatment, even in first meetings. When she would get upset over it, they would blame her and say she was combative. I really enjoy watching therapists react to Ren because every one, seems to be heartfelt, and well intentioned. I only wish there were more.

I don’t think that a therapist would have any way of knowing that RENs illness was physiological if Ren didn’t know it himself. I have some kind of undiagnosed autoimmune shit that has my body feel like it is literally on fire and I have had 8+ pages of bloodwork, x rays, mri etc with nothing conclusive.

MrEkshin, this doctor explained why he closed his eyes. Did you not listen? I often close my eyes so I can listen better. I'm visually oriented and sometimes the visuals distract me so it helps to close my eyes or stare at something inanimate. This guy is probably the same way

@@cathywethington5913 - He was supposed to be reacting to a VIDEO performance, not an AUDIO track. There's superb acting and performance art going on and an atmosphere portrayed by the location, the lighting, etc. All of this conveys the message the artist wanted you to feel. Sure, you can react to an ice cream sundae by sitting on it, but you'd be missing a lot of the experience. You'd be able to talk about how cold, wet and squishy it is, but there's a lot more to it than that.

I am a 57 year old man farmer from Kansas. Discovered Ren in April 2024 and quickly dove into his extensive catalog of musical content after hearing Hi Ren. To date I don’t believe that there is thing that he has posted on you tube that I haven’t seen and it is all remarkable, wonderful, enlightening, Insert adjective. As great his musical talents are he may be a better human soul. I strongly suggest you check out his chapters 1-8 this is him telling his life story you can find by going to his channel ren makes stuff or I just put in Ren chapters 1-8 and they popped up but that may be because he was already in my algorithm. In any case they are definitely worth checking out, not necessarily for reaction purposes in fact there was another therapist reactor that started to react to them and decided against it for reasons that will become evident to you but it will definitely give you context, he ends most of these chapters with a music video that you may not want to watch or be prepared to record a reaction video to it. Ren is an independent artist and relies heavily on us Renegades and the reaction community. Thank you great reaction!!!!

Yep. Seen the look in your eyes and know you will be falling down this Rabbithole. Ren is a special person because in my almost 50 years on this earth I have not seen an artist..any artist literally be a magnet to those in the dark. I have a theory that on one of Rens many trips through the halls of hell he stumbled on to the lock that opened the hearts of all the broken souls in the world. He put it in his pocket for safe keeping until the day he sat down and wrote this song. That was the day the RENagades were born. Have fun with all the people coming your way. Totally agree with the Hero's Journey comment. I believe that is one of the reasons why this resonates with so many people. Ren seems to drop bits of Jung and Joseph Campbell in his songs. Definitely check out the tale of Jenny and Screech (3 parts), he talks about generational trauma. Sick Boi, Troubles (personal health history), Money Game (3 parts) he covers societies sickness. Ultimately his whole catalog is excellent, Ren is an iconic artist, been waiting decades for an artist like him. It is like watching Bowie or Lennon (or the like) in real-time.

Great reaction---what you had to say was valuable. If you would like a few tips on reacting to art pieces like this, Stop the video where you like, and speak as long as you want to. But please---rewind slightly before you go on. You actually jumped ahead a number of times and missed some of the lines. A click on the "10" to the left of the pause button will automatically take the video back 10 seconds, which would be helpful to both you and the audience viewing the video. If you would like to react to more of Ren's music as a therapist, you might like to react to 'Sick Boy' next. Another good choice would be 'Chalk Outlines (live)'. You, as a therapist, could find plenty to react to in those pieces, and there are many, many more. Great choice for your first music video reaction, and I'm sure that we would like to hear what you have to say about some of the other pieces. His KZbin channel is @RenMakesMusic, and there you will find over 200 of his pieces. One thing we all agree on is that Ren does not know how to write a bad song! Everything he does is excellent.

I really feel what you are saying. I'm 33 and have suffered for 14 years with depression, lack of confidince, weight gain and addiction. Thankfully I have always had good support around me. My family or friends that I've made throughout my life. I constantly moved around growing up so I was blessed with the ability to make friends easily ND I'm a guenely happy person most of the time. Also a deep thinker. I say all of this because I want to share my message and story to inspire as many people as possible that anything is possible. I'm starting school on Wednesday and I am going to become a medical doctor with a specialization in international medicine. And I say I am because I've learned in life that you have to say out loud to the world what it is you know you can do. It helps it really does. And it's never too late, you can make change and get to a place in life where you are stable. And I purposefully say stable because you will struggle that's the only way you are able to have those happy moments. As ren points out in this video, life whatever this beautiful thing is; is definitely a pendulum. And that means that in order to experience bliss you must experience suffering. And that sucks, but without suffering you would have nothing to compare bliss to. So be aware of that. And yes as mentioned so eloquently by Dr. David Lovely, please reach out and that can be to anyone who will listen. You are loved who you are know that I love you. And I mean it too, I love every human being on this planet even those who have really harmed others. Because we are all in this struggle together we really are and we need you here, thriving and balanced so that we all move towards the best possible future for all of humanity, nature and the universe. You got this. ❤❤❤

Rens catalog will blow you back. The man is a genius. I wish I would have had someone like you when I was walking through the depths of hell. The first therapist I found really began to help me...then he left me. For someone struggling with abandonment issues, it crushed me. I never did find another therapist that could help me so I had to do the work myself. There are not very many people who understand the depths of CPTSD. It's extremely complex. Hence the term complex ptsd. There are so many layers and so many symptoms that come with living in pure terror since birth. I'm getting through it, though. I finally see the light at the end of the tunnel and I'm reaching for it. It's not easy and it's misunderstood. But that's okay. I've learned to be my own best friend. I began encouraging myself. Notice the word courage in the word encouraging. It's a tremendous task but I figure I must be built for it or it wouldn't be my own task.

I consistently see a lot of people say something along the lines of, "reach out if you're depressed and want to end it". I feel like saying something like this does very little for people that are actually depressed who likely have looked for something or someone to reach out to so they can crawl out of the darkness. Another one is saying, "I care" even though x person saying this doesn't even sometimes know the person they are saying they care about. I wish the messaging was instead more along the lines of, "it sucks for whoever is suicidal or find themselves to be in hopeless situation. I hope whoever is in this situation doesn't end it and doesn't give up hope, but it's understandable if you do give up hope" (this is the sentiment that would be good to put forward, doesn't have to be in these exact words at all). There must be empathy and undersanding for people that are suicidal, instead of people fearfully saying don't do it don't do it I care, reach out!!!

When he stands, how he dances without caring visualising acceptance etc. That being said, good analysis. I’m 39 and have been “stiffly” fighting this battle since I was 5. Plenty of therapists later, this song has been my greatest teacher (and I only first saw it a week ago).

It helped me when the team at UCLA assessed me and informed me of a diagnosis that actually made sense. I didn't mind finding out I will ill...I was relieved it wasn't ALL my fault. And, it helped guide treatment that got me to a stable point that stays pretty consistent. As to Ren, he is so talented! He can sing, play instruments, rap, perform, etc. He is a force, and, yes, authentic. He's also very insightful. They did this is several camera angles, but, it's my understanding that this was done it one take. That, in itself, is impressive as hell.

Did you notice it's live? He created this stripped down and live (he's wearing a lavalier mic. The flashing lights on his darker parts is genius. This is an ode and an absolute piece of art. I love your input on mental health because it's not just music but lyrics.

I just saw your Hi Ren reaction, and put this journal entry of Ren's as my comment to that reaction. jAN 01, 2023 rEN~ Up until I was 9 years old, I would intermittently hear a voice in my head that was not my own. The voice was distinctly different to mine, and always negative. It would self criticize or urge me to do things I knew to be morally wrong. The most peculiar thing about the voice was that it took no effort on my behalf to produce. My own thoughts always felt like there was a process that required effort to bring them to the forefront of my mind, this voice appeared as though it was spoken by another. The sentences felt predetermined like they had already been constructed. I remember very vividly at 9 years old, becoming very frustrated with the voice. I stood in my back yard, internally screaming at the voice to be silent again and again, and it did. In a flash there was silence, to the point where my head felt like an empty room. I wasn't used to the quiet and that voice never returned. It almost felt lonely in my head. When I got older I had intermittent bouts with auditory hallucinations where I would hear perfect symphonies, usually at night when drifting off to sleep. They were so clear that they sounded like they were emanating from a radio in the corner of my room. I knew they weren't there, but for some reason they never came with the feeling of fear. I also recall sitting on a bus at the age of 15, and hearing the sound of a crowded room, with about 100 voices chattering away, I was the only person apart from the driver on the bus. These experiences were always very brief, and few and far between. My last hallucination was during an intense bout of psychosis in 2015, and was my first visual hallucination. I was walking down a pavement after jumping out my mums car in a crossroads in a moment of frustration and distress with my condition. I was trying to run from myself. What appeared to be a homeless man with a dark complexion approached me, and asked me what was wrong. I explained that I had been sick most my life, and I wasn't sure I had the strength to continue. He looked at me, and smiled and told me 'everything is going to be okay in the end Ren.' I had not told him my name. There was something so overpoweringly sincere about this very simple message, which brought with it an overwhelming feeling of inner peace, and in a flash, he vanished. My rational brain always linked these experiences to what the doctors have told me, that there are parts of my brain compromised by the autoimmunity in my body. That the myelin sheaths surrounding the complex electrical system that conduct my thoughts were damaged and compromised, causing these lucid experiences that I knew did not exist inside the physical world. The part of me that edges away from logical and rational thought always attributed these thoughts to some kind of otherworldly intervention, that made my thoughts the battleground of some spiritual tug of war. For a long time I never really acknowledged this part of myself, for with it brought the danger and stigma of sounding like a crazy person. I decided with my latest release, to the best of my ability, to capture and express this chess match of thought. Hi Ren comes out in just over 24 hours. I can't wait for you all to hear it.

Ren's problems started with misdiagnosis of the original condition which turned out to be Lyme disease, but it took ten years of wrong medication and consequently unsuccessful treatments before he found the right path. After the right diagnosis he got stem cell treatment in US and Canada and is now starting to recover. However he spent 10 years with 'Troubles' afraid that he might die at any moment and tempted to self terminate.

I was a young woman in my early 30s with a job that I loved and a career that was taking off very quickly when I was a passenger in a stationary car that was hit from behind. The airbags failed and I suffered a very nasty whiplash. 3 months after the accident I still had crippling pain that no one could explain. I bounced from specialist to specialist and no one had an answer - it was decided that I was "just after the insurance payout". It took a year and about 15 doctors for me to find a specialist who ordered a very unusual scan of the area and the results lit up like a christmas tree, very clearly delineating what was going on. I lost my career as I'm permanently disabled now. Being a woman without children who was unable to return to work, several pain management doctors decided to experiment on me without my knowledge or permission, making my already nasty injury much worse. So I can relate to maybe 5% of what Ren has been through with mis-diagnosis. But the fact that the drugs he was fed was the worst possible thing for Lyme disease and did insane amounts of damage to his already sick body is just appalling. The world is so very lucky that he survived to share his wisdom.

Excellent reaction, I love your compassion and eloquence. One suggestion, if you do the song "Sick Boi" -- early in the song he starts talking about symptoms and side effects, and this always seems to throw medical/therapist reactors into "diagnostic/professional" mode, trying to explain to the audience what these terms mean. We don't need the explanations; many of us have lived our own versions of these discussions. Watching this "Hi Ren" reaction and your discussion afterwards, I don't foresee you'll have the same issue, but what we as reaction viewers hope for is some empathy for what happens on the OTHER side of the desk; we want to see doctors put themselves in the patient's shoes, really LISTEN to an excellent lyricist describe his fear and frustration with the medical system. Discuss whatever you want to discuss, but remember that you're talking to an audience that clicked on your video because they identify with what Ren went through. Also, Ren is telling his individual story, in which his symptoms really did have an underlying physical cause, and he kept asking them to look for one, but he was told over and over by both medical and mental health professionals that it was depression or BPD or a trauma response. He's not against mental health care at all, in a general sense, but he is condemning the lack of listening, lack of curiosity/initiative, and repeated assumptions/ jumping to conclusions that he encountered within the system, even as his body went eight years eroding itself from within.

Thanks! I always enjoy people sharing healing art and this one in particular. If you're going to do reaction videos, most of us reaction fans can attest that pauses can really break important parts. The reactors that minimize the number of pauses & back up a bit to splice back the continuity, of really key phrases and ideas, enjoy the video more and give us a better sense that you're really listening, and not just looking for opportunities to say something. We're all interested in your thoughts, but we're also interested in seeing your reaction. That is why they're called reaction videos. Thanks again!
