Admission Counselor here! 🙋🏽‍♀️ The second reader needs to go through some extensive implicit bias training as well as learning how to be ethical and professional in their reasoning. Saying that you "come across as self-absorbed" is stated as a fact and not as an opinion and should never even be put in reader notes. Being rude in the notes is not the equivalent of being highly selective. They could've just said " Wish they made more connections to how their business can positively impact society". Reader 1 & 3 are the real MVP's.

Thank you for sharing this! It's great to see someone from the selection side offer their perspective. I think it would be great if schools in the US were more transparent about their selection process, such as offering students the opportunity to see their files, regardless of if they were admitted. It would help to motivate a few people, but also allow a lot of people to feel more at ease and less doubtful of their credentials or fit in a program/institution if they saw how varied the reader's opinion and perspective could be. There might be some bureaucratic red tape or FERPA laws that come into play here, but I think the way Jack was able to see his feedback should be how all academic application processes end.
@keylasebs

@@Arri7979 there’s definitely some red tape but not as much as people would think! I think there’s been a widespread misinformation about it being taboo to ask for reader notes. I think this would also make many admissions counselors a lot more accountable and less bias when reading. But there has been a lot of context training in the admission process so we’re headed in the right direction but obviously not enough so here’s to hoping more students ask for their notes!

@@keylasebs - Thank you for responding! That's great to know! I definitely agree that there needs to be more awareness about this process. I'm glad admissions is working to become more context conscious and I agree that some readers would be held more accountable if applicants can see what they wrote. Do you know if you could also request reader notes if you apply at the graduate level? This is all very new to me and I already completed undergrad, so I would love to do this for future applications!

#2 was probably just being racist toward asians. it really comes through strongest in the interview stage according to most studies as asians tend to be untouchable in test scores and GPA. This is known to be the one way affirmative action hurts asians... rejecting qualified students cause "there's too many asians," so they usually go way too hard or show abject discrimination in the interview process. I feel like you should know about this if you're an admissions counselor...

UMich isn't just some random school, it's highly selective. And remember, he still got in, even if reader 2 thought he was self absorbed (and maybe they're right). Lots of applicants to top schools have impressive resumes and space is limited. You have to stand out in a positive way, and the school may have a specific type of candidate in mind to round out their class. That's their prerogative. They are not obligated to admit you. There are plenty of perfectly good schools that will take students with far less impressive resumes than this, even if you decide to write an essay on Clash of Clans.

I think Reader 2 may have had a subtle bias against Asian applicants. A lot of studies have come out showing that admissions officials who interview Asian students give them a comparable personality score to White/Latino/Black applicants. However, admissions officials who don't meet/interview the Asian students give them a lower personality score than White/Latino/Black applicants. Whats the cause of this discrepancy? A lot of activities that are popular amongst Asian students also tend to be devalued in relation to activities that are popular amongst non Asians. I'm sure the Chinese yoyo program (I honestly don't know what it is) is a legit avenue to build a community and develop leadership skills. I wonder how that would compare to an applicant who is a leader in his/her local parkour group. This post is not meant to be accusatory against particular admissions officers. Its intention is to acknowledge biases so that we can overcome them.

It definitely depends on the Ivy, but some schools don't offer the best financial aid packages because they know they can admit students who are willing to pay the sticker price. Some people who are unwilling to go to a school just for the name-brand recognition might choose to go to a school that offers them a better financial aid or scholarship package or a school in a more affordable or desirable part of the country (for example, if you want to live in DC after college, Howard seems like a better option over Yale which is in Connecticut). Also, a school's demographics also comes into play. I can see a lot of reasons why someone might turn down an Ivy in favor of somewhere else.

College applications are getting ridiculous (I only had to write one or two essays per school when I applied to colleges; one for the common application, and one for the supplemental at each school). Also, what do you expect from a 17 year old? Sure some college applicants are older, but the bulk of college students at major Universities are traditional and straight out of high school. Most 25 year old people have no idea what they want or how the world works, let alone a 17 year old.

They are looking for qualities that can be kindled and mentored beyond just the academics. You can be young and immature but still, show an interest in the world outside yourself. I'd have to go back and look but did he have any extra-circular activities that weren't based on making money or hobbies he enjoyed? That tips them off and people can read between the lines but also we didn't get to read the essays.

I was a reader for college scholarship essays, and it was enlightening to see the backside of it all. I did not go to U of M, but instead a smaller less prestigious university in Michigan. As a recipient of a scholarship when I was an incoming freshman, I had to read the essays of the incoming freshman who were now vying for the scholarship. There was a defined rubric, but as a STEM major I hadn't been in a traditional essay focused class for years and found there is still definitely subjectivity to the grading. Also within my stack of essays I found it hard to not succumb to contrast bias.

If this man wants to be selfabsorbed in high school and do everything for him and focus on him and his future before branching out into bigger things in society THATS OKAY! Focus on getting big for you and your family and loved ones. They expect everybody to be talking about ending world hunger and poverty. When you haven’t even done it for yourself. Sad that you do ALL THESE THINGS in high school and they summarize you into something so short of who you truly are. I was ASB athletics commissioner, Christian club president, RSVP club president, Track/XC captain and CIF competitor, student ambassador, student council member. My recommendations were the mayor of Anaheim (where Disney is), and the superintendent of my high school district. I had water bottle refill stations installed at school AND had lunch donated to the homeless at the end of the day instead of having it Thrown out. I had a 3.8GPA with honors and AP classes on top of sports. I did all this. And I got accepted to 2 cal states and no universities. I got one award. National honors society. That I had to PAY for. Out of pocket. AND during senior award night they gave me 1 award. The NHS award (which I paid for) and they pronounced my name wrong. I refused to go up. I went to get my paper later after the ceremony and they said they already trashed it. I went to community, dropped out, and now investing in real estate and I at 19 years old started making 20 an hour. Don’t let schools determine who you are.

First, super impressive work, really well done. Second, it’d be way more fair if Unis just looked at which classes you took, how well you did in those and then your SAT score. Essentially all other evaluations are just way too subjective and leaves room for implicit and explicit bias. For instance, people on the left who are against Asians being over represented in admissions, mentioning your ethnic background might’ve held you back whereas for someone on the right who values investing you could’ve gotten an extra boost. That being said, congrats and best of luck with your studies.

8:15 uh, honestly I think the reason it was deemed questionable was because it seems like you were stretching yourself thin and didn't personalize the effects in which esports has impacted you. It has absolutely nothing to do with hoe common the extracurricular is.

no, I doubt that sneaker reselling and esports are uncommon in applications; in fact I’d assume quite the opposite. They just don’t elaborate for themselves a clear contribution to community or society. But I guess if you’re going into business that’s really not that relevant, is it :>

I don't think either of these are common for people to mention when applying for a university. These might be common to you, but from an admissions perspective, I highly doubt most people would mention something like this because they may not see it as academically relevant, but in actuality I think it helps an applicant stand out. A lot of the people reviewing these applications are not in the same age group as most of their applicants. These two things could be extremely uncommon to them and I think Jack's critique about how he probably could have explained something like esports and it's contribution better in his application is valid. I can definitely see how both of these could benefit certain communities or society (way for people to conduct entrepreneur endeavors without the need for an advanced degree (sneaker reselling), a way for individuals from different backgrounds to connect via a virtual landscape (esports), but I think they just need to be explained.
