Hi Tim my parents use to take me to Thorpeness on a Sunday it’s a beautiful place, Dad said the village was build as a folly by the Ogilvie family for friends and family to stay in on holiday before the war. I’ve been back there as an adult it’s so pretty an whimsical. Thank you for a lovey video so many happy memories there x

What an interesting place - these “model villages” built by wealthy landlords in the 19th and early 20th century always fascinate me - I love the arts and crafts architecture - thanks for showing us around!

Thank for this. I used to holiday in Thoreness for many years as a young boy. We stayed in so many different houses and I would spend most of my days on the mere. I knew every inch of it. I’m now 68 and wonder where did that time go. Nothing has changed which is wonderful. I remember taking a sailing boat and and telling my parents, brother and sister, plus our dog that I knew how to do it. Half an hour later I flipped it over and we all had to wade back to our garden as the house we were in backed onto the water. My parents were not impressed!

My cousin lives about100yds from the House in the Clouds. The windmill next to it was to pump water to the tank which used to be on top of the tower. Thorpeness is a lovely place spoilt only by the fact that local people can't afford to live there, as so many people buy properties to use as second homes. Meaning it's quiet in the winter, and teeming with people in the summer. Lovely restaurants, but oh so expensive, and packed out at end of term with kids coming home from their private schools. The local shop recently was forced to close, as the second home owners chose not to use it..

Tim, the videos look great. It would be great to have you record the walk from Thorpeness to Dunwich including the beautiful beach at Sizewell, as this whole part of the coast is under threat from the plans afoot to make landfall for two new windfarms on the cliffs at Thorpeness and building the new power station at Sizewell. We will need the historical record to make sure the coast is eventually put back to normal, and it would be good to have that memento for the15 or so years we lose it.

The history of the Mere is, it was built by a friend of J.M Barrie, who wrote Peter Pan...it was dug to just a 3ft. depth of water, as they didn't want any accidents to kids, who could pretend they were pirates, etc...We went by horse and cart, that was hiring to take people around the village, and he tells you how it all began..That cost £15 for 4 people, well worth it though, as my bro. and his wife were over on hols...it was perfect, as my bro. used to have his own horse ranch in Australia...

Has a nation we have many 'authentic' and beautiful villages. We hear a lot about such places has Sandbanks and the opulent distaste in parts that it brings brings and attracts. But like many of those of the opposite, Thorpeness has got to be one of the cream of the crop. It, like the others than we are still lucky to have, is just magical, nostalgic and the purity of english excellence. Todays developers should should learn from this 20th century builder and many of our original and earlier villages we are lucky to still have. (instead of the soulless, treeless lined tombstones we are today forced to call homes). It should be law that whether developed built modern or traditional designed homes, 60 % of the surrounding land that is left 'post' the build, developers should have to soft and hard landscape, rather than leaving hard tarmac walkways and nothing else. But of course we need a government with a backbone to return to such ideals.

It's a beautiful place, but a word of warning about the mere! Walk around it with a group of friends and we all suffered from the worst mosquito bites ever! I'm not sure how common this is, but a couple of people were very bad.

Hi Tim, I have an apology to make. I mentioned you added a filter, as the sky was a strange colour. This week was the same deep turquoise? So I look at your blog on my tablet. The tablet showed a beautiful blue sky. we eventually found our tv had tint mode and it was this that was set up wrong. We love your blogs and can now watch in true colour. So i hope you will accept my apology. 🤗
