She did not visit North Korea, she visited DMZ from South Korea. It is possible to legitimately visit North Korea through China for people on approved tours.
@jv-collects62522 ай бұрын
Few corrections: She didn't visit North Korea, she visited the Dora Observatory in South Korea, overlooking the area of the DMZ. Therefore she was essentially not in any danger unless she were to climb the fence, nor was she likely under any surveillance from the North. The Panmunjom Flagpole is in fact not the tallest flagpole in the world, though it was that until 2010. It is still however the tallest supported flagpole in the world. You can't exchange any currency to the North Korean Won in South Korea by official means but tourist spots like these sell often outdated, but sometimes still valid (as with her case) North Korean money such as the 2009 series 5000 Won banknote she bought, hence the "higher than usual conversion rate". She essentially bought a souvenir rather than exchanged money. And last but not least, the beer she purchased is not in fact North Korean but Jin Dalai lager made by the Chinese regional distillery Wangqing Longsheng Beer (汪清隆盛啤酒有限公司). It is commonly and falsely attributed as North Korean beer online, likely as it appears to be sold in touristy spots near the North Korean border as "North Korean beer".

I’ve listened to Yeonmi Park speak about people who visit her former country. The way she phrased it, it’s a really sad idea to want to visit there. Like going to a zoo with concentration camp theme… everyone knows this citizens are suffering, but are trapped in their own country . Meanwhile, visitors come with their visas and are free to go whenever She has a point… it’s kind of a cruel place to visit if you think about it… all funds that are spent in NK go the government, not the people.
@maxir12323 ай бұрын
I went there too and I kind of disagree. You don‘t go to such places to have „fun“ in the way you visit an amusement park or zoo. I‘ve been to places like the Korean DMZ, Ground Zero, Auschwitz and Hiroshima. And if you treat it with respect and really are interested in the history of it, I don‘t think it‘s bad to go there. I learned a lot from it. Especially Hiroshima was a place that really stood out to me. People need to see what‘s wrong in the world.

I lived in incheon S Korea for a year as an English teacher. One day one of my American coworkers said he was going to visit the DMZ on the weekend, and it was clear the Koreans didn’t appreciate it. Someone explained later, the situation is obviously very sensitive so treating it like a tourist spot isn’t appreciated by Koreans.
@BakeXlove11Ай бұрын
I was just wondering how they feel about this being considered a "tourist spot," especially since I'm not Korean and I feel like it's in extremely poor taste for this to be a place for tourism. I don't know, I found this video odd with its upbeat tone. It honestly just makes me sad, the history and the present state.
@sammyp9514Ай бұрын
@@BakeXlove11 it is sad. Korea has a long history and this division was really recent. I had coworkers with family on the other side.. so it is a very real and sensitive topic for them! I would not recommend visiting, I never went. There’s a lot to see in Korea so it’s kindve an odd choice anyways.
