I was at this shop today and bought a Yonex Astrel 115 in near new condition for 9,900 yen (US$68) which is a screaming deal as Tennis Warehouse is currently selling them for $295. And yes, I admired their vintage wood racquet selection. Thanks Harry!

My faith in Harry has been restored. Best vid of the Japan trip so far. I’m amazed you didn’t pick up on the gimmicky string pattern of the Pro Kennex Micro. I believe it had a 22/28 string pattern and may have used string thinner than 17 g. Would have made for a interesting play test vid.

Actually non warped Dunlop Maxplys are pretty difficult to find. Lots of them are around not many are straight. They sold millions but they warped more than most and if you missed high on the head repeatedly (l did) they broke.

What are the most playable wooden racquets to use today? How would the Dunlop max ply's perform today ?

There are various large headed wooden rackets that are easy to hit with, but they don't really have the accuracy of traditional woods. If you go for a standard size, however, the final versions from each manufacturer tended to also have a graphite reinforcement, and they play fine and resisted warping well. For example the Maxply Graphite and the Slazenger Challenge 100 Graphite are still great to hit with today so long as you are not looking for Nadal-style buggy-whip shots.

It's probably pretty subjective too. There are endless discussions on tennis forums about which wooden racquets played the best, as well as so many to choose from. Being an old codger who stuck with one particular type of woodie, I would be biased , but if you are of a later era, the suggestion of a midsize graphite reinforced woodie sounds a good one, as I still see a few of them around. If you like the feel, perhaps you can then downsize to an older smaller racquet, provided you can find one that's straight.

@@ozmagoo7724 I have seen a good amount of wooden at a shop here in long Island, but the lifespan I was told was normally 6 months and many were warped for display only . Tennis warehouse has wooden racquets too but they definitely are display only . 1 Chris evert racquet near me was the only usable one .

@@derekpappas1556 Down here in Oz, you occasionally come across a quality wooden racket in reasonable nick, but also find some in crap condition. Someone has posted that Maxplys tend to have warped and that certainly seems to be true from what I 've seen. Maxply McEnroes seem to fare a bit better, but I have two with slight fractures or splitting (but probably still playable at a pinch). Some Donny Allwoods seem to be reasonably true, and I came across a couple of midsize PK Blue Aces (wood with graphite inlay) in really good condition. You'll need to find something that either suits your swingstyle or that you can readily adapt to. The woodies tend to be significantly heavier than today's racquets, so that might be something to keep in mind. Good luck in your quest!
