I legitimately love what they've done with Barret. His speech makes you understand why AVALANCHE follows him so closely. Because he's a damn good leader, and he motivates them. He's not just loud brash asshole; he's legitimately telling these people that he's here for them. It's wonderful. SO much more characterization.

In the original game Barret was much closer to cool in the way Solid Snake was, but the English translation really leaned into the whole Mr. T thing. This take is way closer to what Barret was supposed to be but takes some characteristics of the translation too. It's interesting.

No cap, he is a brilliant world building addition to the game, he's the first person to challenge Barrett's black and white world view and offers the first grounded real life look into the people that make up Shinra beyond the evil executives. I legit hope he shows up in part 2, maybe Tifa entrusting him with helping the people on the train will motivate him to re-examine how Shinra operates and he ends up working with Reeve to try to change things from the inside

One of the seemingly small, but vast details that I've loved about the remake, is the seamless change of the music when engaging in combat and then coming back out of combat. They have alternate versions of the same area's theme perfectly switching between each other in and out of battle. It's beautiful.

There's one section in wall market in one of the side missions where you first hear the normal overworld theme then it transitions when you see you someone you're fighting before you fight them or interact to the theme associated with them and it's one of the best usages of the music so far

Seeing Max so emotional as the opening credits roll, and as he plays the opening sequence... I wish I loved anything half as much as Max loves this game. Half my life is already done, and odds are I never will; but knowing this kind of passion and gratitude exists in somebody else is nice to see. I think that's why I watch, actually. When this game was first launched, I was 14yo. I've waited 23 YEARS for this, and It's a weird thing to be 37 now and find such an amazing feeling about something that is supposed to be for people far younger than I am... but I really don't mind. I've waited this for so long that it's hard as shit to believe this is real and not come to tears. One thing I love about this game is that the developers actually took the time to match the lip movement with the corresponding language. I played it with Japanese voices and the lipsync was perfect then and now, watching a playthrough in English and seeing the lipsync perfectly match the English voices as well is really something.

Though it was Avalanche that planted the bomb, Shinra caused the explosion to be much bigger than it was (The robots were shooting the reactor), thus allowing the public to see Avalanche more as a threat to the public than an enemy. Some well-played propaganda by the true villains ;w;

My uncle talked about FF7 all the time when I was younger and how much he loved this one in particular. Needless to say I got addicted to it. Watching the Sephiroth fight scene over and over again on psx. I remember there was a anime that was based off Zack’s story and I got invested in that. This game made me travel back in time. Playing this remake evoked all the same feelings and more that I felt when I played the original game over 20 years ago. I've been saying the same as your title "I've been waiting over 15 years for this game." whenever someone asked why I was so hyped about FFVII:R finally releasing. It is mesmerizing the care with details that the dev team had with this game, in all its tiny details recreating scenes from the original, on fleshing out the world with small things like posters and objects in the background that tells a small story on its own, with how expressive the characters are and how they interact with each other, the delicious dynamic music and nuances to other themes. I see some people complaining about how the game has "too much filler" with side missions and other chunks of main story in between the portions from the original, but I am loving every second of them. Expanding Midgar and its characters was the best thing they could've ever done, and I'm thankful to the team for the passion behind this project. I'm 11 hours into the game at Chapter 8, and it is magical. Much like Max, I sometimes stop and look around the background so masterfully crafted, with my jaw dropping. Then I take a deep breath of satisfaction and thank the Lifestream that I'm alive to play this game. Makes me forget about this whole real world crisis. Whenever I see Max stopping to admire the beauty of the game, I feel the same, because I'm doing that as well to savor every single moment. Final Fantasy VII changed my life 20 years ago, and it changed again with this remake.

Doubt it. If I remember correctly, Kunsel is a SOLDIER 2nd Class, not a lowly Shinra Officer. This might be the Officer that trained with Cloud during their time together when he was still an Officer or he could be one of the few members of Zack's Fan Club that was made after the Genesis Incident that disbanded after the Nibleheim Incident when everyone thought Zack and Cloud died in; that's probably why he'd recognize the Buster Sword since one of the Fan Club's Perks is getting memorabilia of the SOLDIER they are following. Sephiroth's Fan Club gave its members a replica model of his Masamune. I wonder if Kunsel got promoted to 1st Class after Crisis Core. Besides neither Reno or Rude recognizes Cloud's Buster Sword during their encounters especially that it is one of a kind and spending a lot of time together while Zack was part of Shinra.

I forgot to mention that you later on encounter that same infantryman during the Shinra rescue mission and mentions that he'll get Kunsel. He's more than likely 1st class now, but the real question is: since it's assumed he's still Shinra's loyal lap dog, I wonder if you have to fight Kunsel later on in the next FF7R game...or will he resign as SOLDIER and join Cloud and co.? Either way, there's so much up for discussion regarding this side story, imo.

I'm loving your commentary. I came here for the remake of a memory and subbed for you, dood. I'll be honest, that opening scene brought me to tears. It hits home, literally. I think for many of us this game has been like another home for the time we played and replayed it. There has not been a game quite like it. There are a lot of great things to be said about this game and I'm glad that you pointed out that the lighting is truly amazing, but what I'm missing is poor slobs like me, commenting on the 3D environment and the way it's displayed. I'm a poor slob that has never played a 3D game with a moving camera for longer than 2 or 3 minutes without getting seasick I can't even watch such games in a video, not even in a background on a screen in someone's room, in a video. I missed a couple of Final Fantasy games because of that. But I have watched through the entire demo in one go, completely confused as to how that was possible without my getting sick. And here's the thing: It's not just the lighting, it's the entire environment, it's perfect and it's displayed without any distortions, stretching and bending like in literally every other game. It's as if that mako reactor is actually there and you're moving around in it. That's fucking amazing and prize worthy, but to me it's much more than that: it means that though I get seasick from playing any other 3D game, I can play the best remake ever and it's the remake of my all time favorite game, in 3D, without getting seasick. It's not even a dream come true. I never dared dreaming or hoping for this. This game exceeds all my dreams and then some! A day after watching a playthrough of the demo I was knocked out for two weeks by a virus and I completely forgot about the game. My birthday is coming up this month. I guess there's only one gift I want: not die until part 3! :p Okay, maybe I want 3 presents :) But there's apparently over 15 hours of cutscenes in this one alone, so yeah, I'm not in a hurry :)

Can I just say that this game has some of the most satisfying combat? Not necessarily for the depth, but for the momentum. I can do a meaty ass combo into a finisher with cloud, and instead of waiting for his recovery frames to finish I can immediately switch to barret and do some thunder magic into another finisher, and then switch to tifa to do EVEN MORE crazy shit. The way you can smoothly transition from character to character and keep the flow of combat going is so addicting. Square, ya did good.

I can't wait for the other parts. This is the only lp i currently want to watch just for the reaction and the atmosphere. ( i dont know if this is interesting for everyone): i just noticed that the conversation scene with aerith where she gives cloud the flower in regards of the context was changed a little in the german Version ( might be an exception , i don't know). There cloud tells aerith that he doesn't trust her and thinks the only reason she gives him the flower on the house is because so that she can get a favor later on in the game. It's not something major but i found this small change quite interesting .

Back then I always interpreted that scene as Sephiroth taunting Cloud by paraphrasing Zack's dying words and Cloud somehow remembering Zack no problem in that moment. After all, Cloud somehow remembers killing Sephiroth when he's not supposed to know what happens after confronting Sephiroth in Jenova's chamber.

this is just an observation but if you played crisis core zack fair says "consentrate" at the begining of every other battle... i think its a fair touch they did with Cloud Zack to do the same.
