People fleeing conflict and poverty across northern Africa and the Sahel region are increasingly attempting the Atlantic crossing to Spain’s Canary Islands. Mediterranean crossings have dramatically reduced, owing to more frequent patrols along Europe's southern coast, pushing migrants to take the more dangerous Atlantic route instead. More than 900 people have died attempting to reach the Canary Islands in 2021.
