Why migrant crossings from Africa to the Canary Islands are soaring | DW News

Around ten thousand migrants have arrived on Spain's Canary Islands so far this year - most of them crossing from Mauritania. Last week, the European Union and Spain pledged 210 million euros to help Mauritania clamp down on smugglers and to deter migrant boats. The Canary Islands are an important destination for people trying to reach continental Europe. The numbers of those attempting the dangerous Atlantic crossing are soaring. So too, the number of those who die. DW's Jan-Philipp Scholz reports from Las Palmas and Mogán, on Gran Canaria.

Im afraid this is one of sad consequences of social media owning a mobile device? The planet has become alot smaller now. Globally people can see. People like themselves living good happy healthy life styles. Everyone has aspirations in life? Why not! People say the grass is always greener! When you havent got the basics in life,you see all these images all the time of people living good lives. What are people going to do? Look for a better life. We are very lucky in our countries. Global some people are living in really bad situations. "People with" and "people without!" Sad story.

Nope, the previous inhabitants of the archipelago were called guanches, and their society was tribal, not part of another state like Mali. Also, it was more than 600 years ago, and the Mali Empire was nowhere near the islands. The people in the islands have been also for centuries from European descent. Please inform yourself before spreading misinformation.
