In honor of my dad! He loves his wife the way one should. He just sang a few verses to me over the phone today. Love you, dad!

Thanks for the song. This is on of my favorite Eddy Arnold recordings. Reminds me of WWII when so many "walked alone" waiting for the return of their loved one. Some of them, like my brother, didn't return. I think of him and his girl friend when I hear this song. I hope she has had a good life. CowboyOld

As a kid while building model airplanes I'd have a country station out of Chicago WJJD playing these wonderful songs
@bobharris70469 жыл бұрын
John Bullard Your comment about building model airplanes and listening to WJJD Chicago brought back memories. During the '30's and '40's I would listen to WJJD; also WLW Cincinnati; Renfro Valley Barndance; WWVA Barndance, W. Virginia. Do you remember XERA from Villa Acuna, Mexico with 100,000 watts? I too built airplanes from the mid '30's to mid ' '40's, then I went into the Army Air Corp in '47. I lived 70 mi from Nashville so I got WSM Grand Ole Opry. Those were some good days. Take care.

This song reminds me of the war years-1942-1945. Eddy Arnold made some great records back in the 40s with Little Roy Wiggins playing the stright ahead country music guitar.

Amen! One of my dearest friends on earth was LRW. Never accepted by the "western swing" and Nashville steel players; but he helped EA to rise to fame while playing on ALL but two of Eddy's hits: "It's a Sin" and "To My Sorrow" for 25 years! His simple style and perfect embellishment of Eddy is Unprecedented in music IMHO. He died a pauper. His family had not a dime to even place a grave marker on his grave. Thankfully someone later did it. Eddy would not contribute a dime! I miss him.

The shortest running time is usually the original. Look for 2:45 sec, Vol 1. It"s on here, just added in Nov 2014. See the difference for yourself.

Have only listened to Marty Robbins Version for many years, but i think Arnold's Version is more correct to the country-(cowboy)-life back some years. (Reminds of old Roy Rogers Songs)

+Joe Blow-You are correct; the original came out July 9, '45, with "Did you see my daddy over there", "I walk alone", "Many tears ago", "You must walk the line". Session #1 was Dec 4, '44, with his first release ever, from that session, "Mommy please stay home with me". I was 14 in '44. Eddy was my idol. "Did you see my daddy over there" was my favorite at the time; I found it on U-TUBE. His style singing changed the 1st. part of 1950, when he let go the steel guitar and fiddle. Hope this helps. 12/15

This song came out in 1945. It also came out in Dec 1948. This song you hear here is not the original. Eddie did a lot of his original hits later for stereo effects; and as he once said "for the money", but they nevet did to well. Reason; after you' ve sung a song a few hundred times, you don't sing it with meaning as you did when you first recorded it. The tempo is slower ; and the song is "drawn"out". Tip! When you look for the original song, find the shortest running time , it will have a faster tempo. KZbin has added a bunch of songs and I find most of them are the original. A remake is never good as original. It's only original once.

+Bob Harris ..well said Bob, but sometimes it is hard to have "The Original" because of being rare and hard to find. It is kind of like eating warmed over oat meal, - but it is still good :)
@bobharris70469 жыл бұрын
+56Rickster You are correct about finding the original. You have to search for it. U-TUBE released a bunch of songs Nov 2014 on Eddy. They were all originals. I have Eddys; songs from the;40's;s to early ;50's,. Never cared for him after '53. When you look for the original, look for the shortest run time. This song is 3:15 min, original is 2:46min. Check out the difference. Thanks for the feedback. 12/15

+ Bob Harris - Interesting. It's been more than 30 years since I looked through several boxes of old 78's my dad left me. He had quite a few of Eddy's. I remember some of them. Think I'll look through them again. Thanks for visiting and sharing your comments on many of my videos. I appreciate you sharing your knowledge with all of us. Take Care, & Peace :)

AvidOldiesCollector, They are not the same song. I Walk Alone/Did You See My Daddy Over There was recorded in 1945. I believe it was his 3rd or 4th record release that year. You used to be able to get that information on LP Discography but they have changed their format and no longer list single record releases. So I can't tell you the record number. However you can now get past issues of Billboard online. Look up record reviews from around October 1945.
