The soleus muscle is a huge glucose consumer. Its why walking burns so many calories. There is even a study that showed seated calf raises after eating will curb a glucose spike. You should do some experiments with glucose monitors.

Happy new year, great video. This video seems great for me to post this. I am 45 years old and I always had problem with bodyweight. I weighed 320lbs, but last 6 months I changed my habits... and now I am at 250lbs. My goal is to achieve 180lbs by the end of 2025, and I think it's possible. So far what I did is that I got workout and meal plan from website OnlyMeal, than I started to drink more water and make at least 5000 steps per day. That's it.

i was thinking of making this my new year's resolution, so thank you for posting this and showing us what it's really like. i didn't realize 1. how long of a distance 10k steps actually is and 2. how even a trained athlete can get sore feet and need rest just from walking. i'm still pretty sedentary currently while off work, but my goal is to get 7-10k a day at least 4 days a week, like mon-thurs once i'm back on schedule :)

Ive been walking 10k a day minimum for 3 years now, averaging around 12-13k on a yearly basis, went from 290lbs to 211 in the first 2 years. (I do weight training as well 3/4x a week so put on a ton of muscle mass as well) Some tips: -Don't build up too fast, add 500-1k steps few days, or every week. -Try implementing walking into your daily chores, take stairs instead of elevators, park your car the as far away from the entrance of the supermarket as you can. so you're forced to walk further. When walking, always take the long way around. Walk around in the gym when resting inbetween sets. -buy a good running shoe with a little bounce, not too much, it'll save your knees when you're on the heavier side. (Nike pegasus, adidas ultra boost are great, especially for walks on pavement) The most important thing though, implement first, then optimalise.

Tip for anyone else wanting to get into walking ( I do 20k a day); break your feet in gradually. Add a couple of thousand steps a week, look after your feet (plasters, foot moisturising, change your socks) and you'll have a much easier time getting into it. Best of luck for everyone jumping into something new in 2025.

Great video. I try to do this every day.... it's kinda hard because of time. One thing I noticed is that if you walk more, you get more hungry. So, be carefull if your goal is weight loss. Another thing is that I think my cardio vascular endurance improved as I do walks with a steep incline or just walking fast. That helped me in weight training too, my recovery time between sets is shorter.

During the year I normally attempt to ramp up steps throughout the year to take advantage of the weather and go on hikes/backpacking trips. I start just trying to get around 5k a day for the first couple months, then go to 7500 a day the next bit, then 10k+ until the fall. Last year I got to around 15k a day before the weather turned, with a couple 28k+ during some backpacking days. Part of me is thinking about getting a treadmill to make the transition easier because of weather and lack of walkable areas quickly acceptable. I tend to realize the steps turn into a maintenance thing for weight and mood as they increase and I want to capture that joy you can get by just exploring new areas!

I walked an average of 28k+ steps a day (not counting steps outside of work) for about a little over a year straight. I didn’t really notice too many changes besides being unable to put on weight (I was eating an obscene amount and still losing some weight) and getting decently strong. Although the strength likely came from work rather than the walking. Edit: I would strongly recommend getting/finding footwear and insoles that work for you. I eventually got a pair of boots just right and they didn’t start feeling uncomfortable until the 14 hour mark at work (likely 45,000-50,000 steps).

Been doing the following since September 2024: 10k+ steps per day. 6+ mile walks/ 15k steps on the weekends (about 12k steps on the walk alone, 3k steps for the rest of the day). Quit drinking alcohol entirely. Small snack in the morning, large meal at night. Cut out bread entirely. Just watching my calorie intake seriously, but not counting everything. -- I'm down from 240 to 195. Walking is my thing now, because holy crap it works, it's easy peazy just get comfy shoes and calf sleeves, and doesn't take that long tbh.

A walking pad makes all the difference especially during busy work days and the winter. I recommend to everyone i know to invest in a walking pad and standing desk. If your job doesn't work well with walking while working because it diminishes your ability to focus, it's easy to turn on the walking pad and turn on a show or pop some KZbin videos up that you were going to watch anyways and get to stepping. The time flies when you're keeping your mind occupied and next think you know you go from 0 to 10k steps in an hour and a half. If you have a smart watch that tracks your steps like most of us do, i recommend attaching it to your ankle to track steps when on the walking pad (as my arms are on my desk so it does not count my steps accurately). On days that the whether or my busy schedule allows, i do like to get a majority of my steps outside. However as we can see in this video you don't rack up as many steps as you'd hope being outside. So on days when i just don't want to be outside and/or find multiple places to get my all my steps in the walking pad provides me with that option of walking and watching. No excuses! Once i incorporated 10k steps a day into my daily activity i noticed weight slowly just drop off with the only change being moving. Don't under estimate how much walking alone can do for you!

I did a minimum of 10km per day for 2.5 years during Covid (April 2020 onwards). Did five half marathons and once a full marathon over the course of 24 hours all locally (no actual races). Didn’t miss a single day no matter what the weather. Over 10,000km logged in my health app. Thankfully never picked up any injuries other than the odd blister. Lost about 16kg in weight and got my body fat down to just over 10%. It was time consuming and sometimes got a bit boring do the same route most of the time. Listening to music, podcasts or making a phone call would often help make the time seem as though it was going faster.

North American car dependence sucks. Our bodies were made for walking. Last year I walked an average 10.100 steps (says my Fitbit) per day without trying. Just living life and going where I need to go without a car. Walking to the grocery store, to the neighborhood café,, to the metro station, walking instead of waiting for public transport, or taking my bike to work or wherever.

For anyone that needs help getting more steps: I couldn't say more about how much my walking pad has helped me. It's a great combo to my adjustable stand up desk and instead of bed rotting/doom scrolling like I used to I easily get 20,000+ steps in a day. I just watch KZbin/TikTok while walking. I even get to walk while I work since I work from home. It was around $200 on Amazon, a GREAT investment into your health. After awhile you don't even notice you are walking. The only thing that eventually starts to happen is your feet start to hurt like he said in this video but I bought new shoes with comfort padding and it's helped immensely. Even just resting for a day or two would help as well. I also bought a cardio bike for when my feet hurt so I can switch over to that and keep the calories burning... yeah, I guess I'm a little obsessed but the results speak for themselves! I've never looked/felt better!!

I have also walked over 10.000 steps/day for about 5 years, First, I do a moderate walk in the morning to a store and back, then a much longer walk around sunset to the store, through a park, and along a creek and back. Then the rest is achieved during my 2 hour gym sessions, long parking lot walks, or sometimes a third walk.

Problem I have is that I know of fear, and then I still look back.. Stupid me. It's better to give in to nutrition, have more of a routine, find exercises that I can actually perform within my abilities, and realizing I could walk before I run. It will be useful to live this way. beneficial.

Walking 10K steps for 1 month straight I was able to lose about 8lbs and all my slacks/pants started fitting way better.. I recommend buying a $200-$300 walking pad for the house, also having a gym membership makes it way easier. I get most of my walking done at the office/while commuting. Then I get the remaining 3000-4000 on my walking pad or at the gym.

I literally walk 20,000 to 25,000 steps a day working at a garden center. Feet don't hurt so much as legs typically do after 8+ hours straight. I try to rest on days off, but even without going to work I walk about 10,000 to 15,000 steps just going out and about. Idk how 10,000 is considered hard, I do it by accident. As long as you don't work a sit down job and actually go out on days off, I see this as a beginner challenge.

10,000 steps can seem like a lot if you're someone that doesn't usually get more than two or three thousand but myself I get about 10 to 15,000 a day. I find the easiest way to do so is to download a few episodes of a show I like to watch and then walk on the treadmill at the gym while watching the episodes. Makes the time go by quick. Set my speed to 3.2 and my incline to 3.5 and doesn't usually take more than 2 episodes of a 40min show.

Working from 7 am and when I’m done I have anywhere from 4-8 thousand steps before I’d go to the gym early in the afternoon makes it significantly easier. If I get more than 13-14 thousand a day I do notice moderate pain in my shins but other than that you’ll adapt. You said you only averaged a couple thousand a day. Work up gradually get into a productive routine. Maybe invest in those desk tread mills. Intentionally go out of you way to get extra steps. World Health Organisation recommends a minimum of 8k. 10k comes from a marketing push for a four digit analog speedometer in the 60s. There's a lot of jobs where you routinely hit like 23k every work day. It's amusing to see how the yardstick gets chosen

Waliking on a flat track going as hard as I can go (pretty much) for an hour, I can get in 7,500 steps. This is a speed a little over 3.5 mph. Total calories burned at my weight is 500. Pretty good, but I have little old ladies passing me with a smirk. If you're walking to roll up the calorie burn, speed of walking is key.

10k is usually my minimum - it's 3pm and I'm on 21000 right now. I get an hours walk in every morning regardless of the weather - podcast, or brainstorm ideas and that's usually around 6000. Then if I have chores, or shopping to do, I get the rest of the 10k passively.. I really don't find it difficult. Now getting up and doing weight training? I find that difficult to do every day..

It would be easier if you upped your running to 3 miles instead of 2. Or, all you need is 2 x 1 hour brisk walks per day. One in the morning and one at night. You will hit it easily and sleep much better. Also, you don't need a rest day from waking....

*Walking is the most effective form of exercise for losing weight whereas running and other high intensity aerobics are proven to be the worst due to the energy sources targeted and how it changes the metabolism.* What happens under high intensity training such as running is your body burns off all the most concentrated energy sources such as glycogen and the glucose in your liver, then it starts working overtime to protect the fat, *and especially so if you go from one extreme to another as in sedentary to suddenly intense aerobic exercise.* Your body's fight or flight mechanisms takeover and you destroy any chance you had at easy, consistent and significant fat loss through exercise. The metabolism completely bottoms out and so someone who jogged for a week until they could run/jog 5 minutes straight until the end of the 1st month, jog/run for 15 to 25 minutes without rest has just programmed their body to stay obese. *I've done everything under the sun for weight loss and the most effective exercise was hands down, walking for massive lengths of time and distance, the least effective was jog-running a couple miles without rest.* After I started high intensity running trying to get rid of the very last of belly fat, I looked like a rotting corpse! I was doing everything else right and yet I quickly looked malnourished, haggard and in danger.

People at my gym look at me funny as i take a lap around the perimeter of the building in between ever set. I spend most work days sitting at a desk for 9+ hours and am lucky to have 3500 steps in by the time i get home. Those 2500-3000 steps i get in at the gym make hitting that 10k much easier after work.

Well, with work, I average between 15000 and 18000 steps a day, considering I also walk to work (home > train / train > work, then back) ... though I don't do them on the week-end. What I've noticed is after a month on holidays I put on 8kg (eating like I usually do) as when I'm on holidays I don't walk (only to toilet, fridge, kitchen). So it sure does burn calories ^^ Edit: btw, I have heel inflammations akin to tendinitis of the Achilles tendon ... if I could walk less, I would.
