Same, I don't really even like guns. They're not a hobby, shooting at the range isn't a pass-time of mine, I don't hunt with a gun (I use a bow), I'm not a "gun guy" either. When I starting dating my fiancé I made it clear I owned and operated firearms. I had training and I stored them safely. She had never interacted with firearms in her life until we met. This meant I would dictate how her first experience with them would go. I offered to bring her to a local range I frequent to see what is was all about. We went through safety and the manual of arms thoroughly. She then shot really really well. She didn't hate it. While she will never be a gun enthusiast as I am she no longer fears firearms anymore. I've shown her I can be trusted to be safe and that I know what I'm doing. She's supportive now👍

People are scared of what they don't understand. 1 - Have her take a gun safety course, ideally a concealed carry course. If its a good course, they'll teach her. 2 - Look up actual statistics. Guns are a net safety, unless you're feeling depressed, in which case, DON'T GET ONE. 3 - Get a safe way to store it. I'd never touched a gun until I met my wife. Now I can't imagine not carrying one.

Most American gun owners say they own firearms to protect themselves and their loved ones, but a study published this week suggests people who live with handgun owners are shot to death at a higher rate than those who don’t have such weapons at home. “We found zero evidence of any kind of protective effects” from living in a home with a handgun, said David Studdert, a Stanford University researcher who was the lead author of the Annals of Internal Medicine study. The study followed nearly 600,000 Californians who did not own handguns but began living in homes with handguns between October 2004 and December 2016, either because they started living with someone who owned one or because someone in their household bought one.

@@bkucenski I mean isn't that kind of a no-brainer though? Gun violence is a problem and most gun violence happens with gun owners so it stands to reason that basically anybody with even low level intelligence can figure out that you're more likely to see gun related violence in a home that has a gun. to say nobody has ever benefited from having protection with a gun? I would make an inherent argument that it probably stands to reason that the reason that break-ins don't occur more regularly is because of the assumption that it's very likely there's a gun owner in the home that you are targeting. Like if tomorrow the government snapped its fingers and took the guns out of every single home in the United States, I don't think it's any surprise that breaking and entering would increase because now people would know that there's no danger of a lethal firearm against a burglar. The point is that just because somebody hasn't had to use their gun doesn't mean that gun ownership and self-defense ownership has not had safety benefits.

As a gal Realtor, it took one bad incident while showing a home to realize how powerless I was. I had never felt scared for my life in my 45 years by another human until that moment. I went to gun safety classes and my husband took me shooting (which he has always wanted me to do but I was never comfortable with guns.) I now own a gun and have my conceal carry. It stays in the safe most of the time but I have it in my purse sometimes. I’m 99% sure I’ll never have to use it and I don’t want to. But if it comes down to me or someone else, it’s not going to me. My family are hunters and I grew up with guns. I grew up knowing not to touch them. So I wasn’t trained. I am now.

I showed this man a cabin off the grid miles away from anyone. No cell service. I should have been smarter and should have done my “due diligence” before the showing like I always do for new people. @@brightpage1020 So again, proper training and education are required. A negligent person would leave a gun or hammer or knife within reach of a child. Someone who understands proper safety protocols, would not. Inanimate objects are not dangerous, they are only dangerous if they are not properly cared for or used -therefore it requires a person to make them dangerous. Are there freak accidents where things malfunction, for sure, that’s a very small percentage of incidents though. A hammer on a shelf in and of itself is not a threat or scary. It is the person handling them. Anyone who is afraid of an object, has a lack of understanding, knowledge, and training.

My wife and I weren't anti gun, but we just didn't make it a priority to own one. She had a bit of a fear of them at first. That changed real quick when my neighbors were the victim of a home invasion. Just the mom and baby at home themselves. Thankfully nothing bad happened to them. That made us both say "let's get this part of our life handled."

I bought a $31,000 home in a Columbus OH ghetto at age 20. The best defence is a gun and a family dog. Rottweiler, German Shepherd, Pit Bull, Doberman. Train the pup to be nice and use the dog only for looks. Don't let anyone pet the dog you don't trust. You don't want the dog to smell and learn the person who may break in. My parents and family love our Rottweiler! A gun is also necessary!! But, it sounds like you are with a liberal. Lol. Guns are necessary with the threat of big government becoming more popular.

First, Ben is calling from Chicago. I grew up there. The conversation should go like this. Him: Honey if we were in a dangerous situation together which one of us is going to protect us? You or me? Her: You. Him: If I'm going to defend us then I'm going to choose how & with what. I'm going to purchase a gun. I'm going to take a gun safety course. Please join me. Please go to the range with me? Parts of John's reply were just not based on reality. Yes John, you "married her so you do have to protect her"! It's part of your job! Ben, knows that he can't be with her 24/7 to protect her. If you actually devote yourself to being a responsible gun owner meaning taking classes and appropriately storing it you'll be fine. So much home gun violence comes as the result of people who store their guns like idiots and don't take it seriously. The very fact that she has extreme reverence for a weapon tells me that she would take it very seriously learning how to use it and how to store it. And here's the thing. It's more likely than not that you'll never have to use the gun for self-defense. But gun ownership is protective in a passive way more than active for the average person. Meaning a potential burglar has to consider the fact that the home they are burglarizing could have a gun owner inside. It stands to reason that possibility in and of itself keeps potential burglars away and harm quelled. I give tomorrow morning we woke up and somebody snapped their fingers and guns were gone from every home I guarantee you would see an immediate massive spike in burglary and invasion. And also it's nice to not want a gun and feel like you don't need it but if God forbid the day comes that your family is in danger from a home intruder you're going to be damn glad that You had a firearm. And I don't care how anti-gun You might be but the first thing you're doing when you get a home invasion occurrence is calling 911...so someone with a gun will come defend you.

Self defense gun use, while it does happen, is exceedingly rare. Much more common, what does not make the news, are the accidental shootings, the suicides, the domestic violence, that happen everyday with guns in the house. Oh my goodness yes. Get a gun. But also get a locker / vault for it or your collection, or lockable case. Keep it safely and responsibly. And get training or brush up on training with how to use it and clean it safely. If there are kids in the house, be sure they do not have access, and that they know guns are deadly weapons, not toys, and that people could be very seriously hurt by them if they misfire or worse. These days, you may need a gun. Some sheriffs in certain counties are asking citizens to protect themselves, like if their department has been underfunded. Your security is up to you. Whether that means a gun for you - and it shouldn’t if you’re not comfortable with that - or a speed dial with people you trust to show up in time with backup… is up to you. Try asking your wife to come with you to the shooting range a few times. I was terrified of guns in general until I went to a summer camp that offered Riflery. (I’m old so that was before Columbine, let alone cases like Sandy Hook or Uvalde). They’d train 4-5 students per day starting in prone position on a mattress at a 30-50 ft. Range in handling, loading, cleaning, and locking up the .22’s. Some campers loved it. If you didn’t, you were never forced to shoot. It was an opportunity you could take but they respected you and let you read, write in your journal, or play card games at the shooting range while your friends won awards for their aim. No judgement. Just encouragement. It took 3 years of my fear holding me back… but I finally tried it after seeing so many more people get shooting medals along with a strong sense of confidence in themselves when they scored a great paper target. There were common sense rules against shooting wildlife or anything else and if anyone acted out of line, they would be separated from the rifles immediately. I never actually saw that happen because everybody felt careful, respectful, and honored to have a chance to try this activity. The medals were cool. Sharpshooter, Marksman, Marksman 1st class, Bar I, Bar II… all the way up to Bar 9 from standing position after sitting and kneeling… I never got that far or anything but the training helped me see guns as less of a threat and more of a tool. So, I wrote in my journal or read books for 3 summers but then got bold and just tired a round… that’s all it took. Then I wanted to do better and aim for a medal or at least shoot through an old discontinued penny to wear as a necklace. The class idea is a great idea. Take some training and see how flexible you both feel about guns. And maybe it’s a hard “no, not comfortable” and more power to you if it is. As much respect for that as any other choice. The news stories about guns are so sensational and dramatic and horrifying and real and scary. And so are the TV shows… and so was the event down the block maybe too close to home for you? But real life there are more safe, responsible gun owners than otherwise - they simply don’t make the news because they aren’t as remarkable as the awful stories. In the news industry “if it bleeds, it leads”, so keep perspective in mind to the possibility that just because it could kill somebody doesn’t mean it *will* or has to. Most gun owners you’d probably never even know there were guns in their house. They’re not a status symbol. They’re not a toy. They’re just a tool, like a hammer and a nail, employed to do a specific job, and like a hammer, you need to be careful and be safe or people can get very badly hurt.

Daughter fell asleep a couple of weeks ago and what happened? She peed. Pee soaked into the cushions. I could only clean the surface. Had he listened to me and gotten a different couch, like all our other furniture, we would not have a pee soaked couch. My stance? Serves him right for not listening to me. Please don't recommend shotguns for home defense. They're unwieldy, heavy, high recoil, loud, there's a steeper learning curve than other firearms, and all that makes them not that fun to shoot unless you're a 6ft 250lb man and flashlight attachments are not as common for shotguns as they are for AR-15's, and a flashlight is a MUST HAVE for any defensive weapon. Positively identify your target and what is behind it. My personal recommendation is an AR-15. Lighter, quieter, less recoil, and easy to mount flashlights. People with a smaller frame have more fun shooting them at the range which means they are more likely to TRAIN with them, and training is the most important thing.

@@michaelh2282 naw man. More likely a man will beat a woman to death with his hands in the moment true. But many actually come after a woman with a gun when she tries to leave him. Many of the time murder is premeditated at least in part. Women rarely kill their husbands unless through self defense. More then likely an abusive woman would use emotional and verbal abuse to tare the man down then/or lie to get him thrown in jail. That is far more common. Most abusive women will try to keep the man alive as a money making resource. Killing the man is usually counter productive. Women who kill are more likely to use poison to kill, not a gun, while a man sleeps. Most women are not physically inclined to murder with violence.
