I agree, unfortunately they didnt usually have a choice on tv. The shows to save time and money, had them perform to tracks. TOTP, Solid Gold, etc all did it. Benatar, Harry, Donna Summer and Lennox hated this. Plenty others, but these 3 spoke out.

Whitney actually insisted on singing "I wanna dance with somebody" live in the TOTP studio in the 80s and it was better than the recording , I gather she must have had to push quite hard to be allowed to sing live though.
