I Want The Truth About Roman!

I worked at a sale barn for a few years back in my early twenties, and I've tagged my share of livestock, mostly cattle. And while that glue is some strong sticky stuff, there's NO WAY it'd still be on his tail even 2 years later let alone 3. And if it turns out to be tag glue it's from a few months at mos. It usually wears off of cattle in a month or two, depending on the weather. I personally think instead of getting sold a bag of goods, you were gifted a bag of goods. But Roman couldn't ask for a better place to spend his last years on Gods beautiful green Earth.

I'm ANITA: I went to an Auction Barn one time. The Shape of some of the animals sold through there was heart breaking. It Broke my Heart! There was a pony that his hoofs hadn't been taken care of and it could barely walk. I think some of the animals that were ran through that time I went came from being rescued from bad farms. I'm not saying All are like that and every animals needs a Good home with luv and care but it broke my heart. Merry Christmas God Bless Have a Great Day/night

I have purchased/rescued a horse from auction and those stickers are IMPOSSIBLE to remove but they do naturally come off after a few weeks. I agree with your assumption that his owner probably purchased him at auction to rescue him but he became too much horse for her to handle and she told you a tale to pull at your heart strings to take him. And i understand why you banned her bcuz she relinquished him to you and should no longer have an opinion on how you are caring for him. My opinion is she bought him a few months ago and got overwhelmed. But please be aware that Roman is not feeling well so this “behavior “ could start coming out when he is feeling better. Regardless of how/why you ended up with him, you’re doing an amazing job by him and that is all that matters ❤

I agree. The possible sticker from the auction in his tail, the tail not grown out more, and the mane, and the fact that he's been sick: It makes me think they got him only recently and she realized that he was going to have large vet bills and expensive to feed, not including his age and probably not able to be ridden as a younger horse, and more. I'm so thankful he is with you guys now. We all love him so much and are happy to see him being cared for and loved.

❤I’m sorry to say I didn’t believe his last owner from the beginning. Too many things did not add up. In three years his tail would be longer than it is. Sell sticker glue does not last for three years…EVER. If he had been receiving love and care for three years, he would look and respond differently. No, I never believed her, but he’s home now, Lester. He’s home and his life has just begun. I’m so glad Roman is home with you and Jami. I was thrown off by the hair cut as well. Like Why would he still have the strict Amish cut? I was like how is that loving him if they continued that for 3yrs when it's of 0 benefit to a non working animal. Lester, try using a small amount of cooking oil to rub on the sticky residue on Roman’s tail. I use on my show dogs if they’ve gotten any tree sap on their fur. Dissolves the sap like magic.

@kimhoward8023 his past doses matter it's very important to know what happened so Lester and Jamie can help Roman. When you adopt a pet from a shelter, they will tell you about that animal's past. If you know what that animal went through in their past, you will be prepared to work with your new pet.

I think he came straight from an Amish farm, to a buyer, in a couple days she realized all those things then passed him on to you. Which is a blessing. The fact that he is SO scared says he’s not far removed from that life. He might not understand why he’s not working either. Thankfully he’s retired. Another thing, his main is way to perfect straight of a cut to be several years out from cutting. If all this is true. Also the respiratory illness came straight from a auction. I think he is actually quickly understanding he’s in a different situation. Are women allowed to care for the horses? He may see Jami as something very different. I think you are right Lester. I bet he came from the Auction very short time ago. Auctions are notorious for spreading respiratory infections. It can take months to get the glue off of those auctions stickers but Not Years!

Hes been overworked, and went without food n water probably for who knows how long at a time! And im betting hes been beaten over n over! Lester, it is possible what you are saying. However, it is also possible that the lady tried to sell him at auction before she surrendered Roman to you and Jamie. It could just as easily be true that Roman has had several owners since being owned/auctioned off by the Amish and this lady was in fact his latest owner who happened to find she wasn't able to care for him properly before surrendering Roman to you and Jami. There should be paperwork, but it's probably been destroyed. You didn't purchase Roman, he was surrendered by his owner. While it would be nice to know the truth, it really doesn't matter. Roman will learn to love you both. Just be grateful to have him.

We had a dog like Roman. Said it was 9.... was 15. Lived till almost 19. We fixed her heartworm and all tumors and many many other things. That was my soul dog. She was a once in a lifetime girl amd I've rescued many. I miss her.

I hadnt heard the part right away, since I watch while cleaning and doing other things some times, that you had gotten him from someone else, I thought he came directly from the Amish due to how his bridal path was still short cut. This would be the hair of his mane behind his ears for those that may not know. Its grown out quite a bit since you got him. Also the marks on his cheeks from rubbing werent fresh fresh but have definitely healed up a lot since his arrival. He is super lucky you got him and can help him through his traumas and get him into a good state of mind again. He seems like he is a super sweet, gentle giant, and I am looking forward to seeing him thriving.

Lester, a normal respiratory rate for horses is around 8-24. You have heard the number 43 because that is about the average pulse rate (number of heartbeats) of most horses. There is a national registration for Belgian Draft Horses. What about contacting them and see if there is any way to track him via that previous owner's name, or other ways. Send a Photo of the sticker piece on his tail...they might know what chapters or organizations do that type of labeling, etc. If he came from Oklahoma, as she says, then there might be Draft Horse organizations there that could help with tracking. Roman is a common Amish Draft Horse name.... just a FYI. In fact, there is a Roman on a website at the moment that has the EXACT same story that you told of your Roman. It's very weird that their details are the same... maybe she lifted those details. I'm sure you got some sort of 'papers' with Roman... such as the Bill of Sale when her husband bought him, etc. Right?

the teeth constantly grow they wear sharp pieces that can cut cheeks or toung. we do teeth yearly. deworm monthly. The horses shy easily any ways. if it windy they act up more if they want to. they do play in water with the lips.

Lester that lady actually saved Roman from being bought by a slaughter house bidder. That was where he was going. The condition of his teeth will tell you how she took care of him in three years if he's had dental care. How were his hoofs? Cared for in three years? My first horse was given to me and the owner told me she was 14. She was actually only 9. He said you'll never ride her and she has a horrible temperament. I rode her and we bonded so well. Just be thankful she gave him to you and Jami. This will be his dream come true life he gets to have for the rest of his life. But she did save him from the slaughter pipeline.

Thank you so much for your perspective! It makes sense. If he wasn't taken care of properly, it would definitely have an effect on the teeth. If the diet is not right, the teeth are affected. It could make him absolutely appear older. I mean, if we don't eat right or take care of our teeth, they will rot or our gums recede. He absolutely could be 13 yrs old. Maybe she told the truth but not the truth about how he was cared for. That might not even be a piece of a sticker in his tail. We may never know. He's absolutely where he needs to be ❤

Try some coconut oil on the sticker to help get it combed out. He also has the lil growths that alot of older horses get. Unfortunately you may never know his past,but you will know his amazing future ❤😊

If they had Roman for 3 years, why is his mane and tail so short? I thought about that when he first came but know nothing about horses so didn’t question it. She said he was eating her out of house and home - if they had him for years they would have known how much he ate after years of having him. My guess is, they couldn’t afford to keep him and thought you’d be a better bet for Roman. Or… it’s a sick way of attention from you by giving you a horse they don’t want anymore. I could see it being a tooth issue. Imagine the worst tooth pain you've ever had, and I think a bad tooth in a person can lead to other issues, especially if there's an infection.

You can use soap and water or rubbing alcohol or mineral oil to get the sticky residue off.

I’m so sorry to hear that. The people weren’t honest about Roman but so many times that’s the case with rescues but he’s with you now and Jamie and I know you guys will make a wonderful home and he can live out his days hopefully healthy and happy.

Goo B Gone is one thing rescuers say works on auction glue, which I would almost believe would last three years! But as you say, the bigger issue is that he just won’t let you right now. Glad you found out he has pneumonia and you are treating it. Pneumonia can be picked up at auction but can also just happen

It was a lot less time than that. The sticker wouldn't stay on there for even a year. She realized that he was a lot more work, and ate more than she ever thought, so she got rid of him. That would explain the level of skisishness he has because over time that should level out a lot of times.

No.. I don't think the sticky would stay that long. And I also wonder.. if for three years, Roman had not been a working horse, he would/should be a bit more settled in his demeanor. Remember Amish don't sale nothing until they've worked it to death and is no longer viable to them. Hence his REAL age.

Here is another thought, the Amish cut the horses tails back, but why would the ladies husband do that, In three years the tail would have grown back, so I think your thoughts may be correct about her buying him recently.

I rarely comment, but that's an auction sticker, no doubt about it. Nor is it a 3 year old sticker. Too new looking and still super sticky. Another clue is his forlock. That said, if ever there was an animal bigs, middle, or littles, that needed a forever home with Jami and you, it's Roman. I'm sorry that the lady lied to you and then got hateful with you. That is a "her" problem. You many never find out everything you'd like to about his past other than it being evident that he's been through some very terrible things. Now, he gets to live in paridise, proper care, heal, and be loved by yous and all of us.❤

An auction tag would not stay for three years, a couple months tops. The weather would take the sticky off. If you can (if he has to be sedated again) baby oil or cowboy magic might help remove it. Another scenario, she tried to sell him at auction and he didn't sell for one reason or another(reserve price, ect). I am beginning to wonder if he was used in horse pulls,(think truck/tractor pulls but with horses) just google it when you have time, that could totally explain his neck scars from the collar as they lunge forward to move the weight sled and also his fear of some noises and whips. It is a tough on the horses sport.

Sounds like you’re getting it figured out Lester. I wouldn’t be able to rest until I got that sticker. Get a pair of those small scissors with round tips that can’t hurt you or him and snip it off real fast when you get a chance. Sometimes I wish dogs and horses could talk. Oh the tales they could tell.
