This short animation is director Ann Marie Fleming’s animated adaptation of Bernice Eisenstein’s acclaimed illustrated memoir. Using the healing power of humour, the film probes the taboos around a very particular second-hand trauma, leading us to a more universal understanding of human experience.
Directed by Ann Marie Flemming - 2010 | 15 min

People like to say that we learn from history but this is simply not true. The Rwanda Ethnic cleansing happened in the 90's. I would not be surprised if we have another genocide in our lifetime. I am almost crying when I write these sentences.

A magnificent story and works of art. The characters were drawn as if distilled to their most significant self, animated in the same manner. I couldn't stop watching each face. Thank you for the honest emotion your story recorded, and for not making it more or less than what it was for you. My mother and her 7 siblings lived under the rein of a brutal father most of their childhood. Though there is no comparison to your people's brutality, brutality does ripple into quiet waters. Love does too, as your story told.

Although I am not Jewish I certainly can relate. My family on both sides were in Germany during the war although my Mother was born in Poland and my Father in the Ukraine where my Grandfather was put in a concentration camp and never made it back. I am just really starting understand how much the war effected me although I was born in the United States. There is this air of melancholy whenever my family got together plus I think the shame and guilt being German although my immediate family was not a part of the Nazi Party as far as I know. They all could hear and smell the horror of it all that will never goes away even though they live in relative safety in the U. S.

You mean, "approved history"? Ever wonder why they never cover communist atrocities?
@thumbprint7150

@@hfrhkiuffbkiyfc- who is 'they'? There are masses of histories of communist atrocities, look them up. Two things can exist alongside one another, the holocaust and communist atrocities. There are many aspects of WW2 which have not been popularised; the story of the Russian soldiers entering countries at war's end for example, supposedly as saviours, and raping and pillaging - that is a story being told more often now. Many, many stories - one does not cancel out the other. If you care that much, why not read and explore history. Educate yourself.

What about just being who you are and trying to live life at the fullest? Aren't we all in one way or another affected by the past of our parents? Lovingkindness, tolerance and human understanding are key ❣️

I really disliked this and have a difficult time liking or finding empathy for this person that compairs the holocaust like a drug. I know what it is like to have a parent experence severe trauma...and to repeat that trauma to others elicits shock...and I repeat it over and over and I think it is because we try to make sense of it all by watching others react to the story...but that is trauma not a drug pfft I really don't like this thing.

Everybody experiences pain in life. It's not exclusive to Jews! You'll have to learn to move on and stop putting your pain on display for empathy and tears of pity from everyone. Move on! That's how it is for EVERYBODY not that you'd notice through the tears you have for just yourself though.
