TM Garret became a neo-nazi skinhead at a young age and then grew up to become a Grand Wizard of a KKK group based in Germany. One day though, he decided to cut ties and leave that life behind him.
VICE Met up with Garret to hear his story and understand what it means to be involved in - and leave - a white supremacist group.

Why are their faces censored in the thumbnail?🤔 I want to know who these white supremacists are. They posed for a picture, why can't you show them? Expose them for their hatred. This is why Amerikkka is still racist, because you give others the leeway to be covert racists. This is disgusting and their names should be tarnished. Instead, you decide to protect their identity. They make the laws that disadvagtge minorities, they are in the government, the doctors that maltreat minorities, they're teaching ALL of our children, but this is how they feel.Just like after Charleston, they were teachers And people in government. There are KKK members in government and with you not REPORTING AND COMMITTING TO DUE DILIGENCE, these people will always lurk in the shadows. And if anyone says it's "just an opinion," then why aren't their faces shown. I like pineapple on pizza, I'll show my face after that stament.

Anıl Polat he’s referring to the Young Turk’s genocide of Armenians, Assyrians and Greeks on the basis of their ethnicity rather than on their faith which though often tied to ethnicity can be separated. the Young Turks were largely secular nationalists so being a Christian Turk would have probably been fine but being a Christian Armenian was an entirely different matter, just look at the Turko-Kurdish conflict and they are both largely Sunni Muslims so it can be shown that ethnicity is the main divider.

Lechiffresix six There’s a Jewish saying, “If you save one life, you save the world.” We absolutely have a long way to go. But it starts with one person. For that person, their life is changed. And if one person is changed, imagine how many people that one person will impact. It’s like a domino effect.

Elpeo Puru 1. I’m not a Jew. I’m a Jesus follower. 2. I don’t even know what you’re talking about. 3. Your comment above about Liberals? Completely wrong. I’m a democrat. I hate no one. Definitely not a scumbag, and I don’t hate the first amendment either. Don’t you think YOUR assumptions about others might be part of the problem, too? Because if you really think the vast majority of liberals are like that, you have a very, very incorrect understanding. This is what hatred is formed from: not getting to know the people you hate, misinformation, and lack of understanding.

I particularly enjoyed the story about his (Turkish Muslim) landlord that he suspected of posing a friendly facade (but he must've been a secret terrorist, right?). It's actually very easy to fall into and then repeat a mode of thinking where the world is against you and no one can be trusted. When you assume the worst in people, you stand a chance of becoming that very worst thing yourself.

@radio tech Shall I reiterate? When you assume the worst in people, you stand a chance of becoming that very worst thing yourself. And let's be sure here -- you're talking about some person you nor I have ever met or know anything about. What gives you or anyone else the right to "guarantee" what that person will do under any circumstance? IMHO you might wanna re-watch this video and pay extra attention to the parts where he talked about pre-judging people he didn't know anything about.

Sometimes its about where you start and what you do. If your comment has any validity then I'd direct you to dozens of serial killers who claim to be reformed Christian's now. Perhaps the parole board would be interested in your sentiment. I for one would hope not. We should forgive but there are limits to how we should treat people who've done terrible things.
@acetate909
@acetate909 5 жыл бұрын
@Imperator Redemption is a fickle word whose meaning changes depending on who's using it. I'm taking about the most severe cases of psychopaths who've murdered people with absolutely no remorse. I'm am 100% in favor of criminal justice reform and believe America has a severe problem with incarcerating non violent offenders. My point is that the sentiment of this comment feels nice but it's just a fluffy phrase that breaks down when applied to the real world. Again, we should forgive everyone and treat them with dignity and respect, even and especially the worst offenders but its naive to think that peoples actions and past dont matter and that it's really about the last thing that they claim or do. Nonsense? Which part?
@acetate909
@acetate909 5 жыл бұрын
@Imperator I never claimed or implied that people can't change, feel remorse, or be rehabilitated. Experts across the field agree that psychopathy is chronic and people afflicted with it are not capable of any of those things. You're arguing against something that I never said. Most prison inmates are capable of change and it does happen all the time. Again, I'm talking about specific cases.

I'm glad he was able to turn his life around. This is what I'm more interested in, getting people OUT of this life of hatred. His experience confirms my theory, exposure and acts of love/kindness are key ways of breaking the barrier. It won't happen instantly and it might not affect everyone, but with genuine effort it can surely help.

@starrgazer9 5 жыл бұрын
@@emperorstevee No, but it's something I concluded by myself. I used to be one of those people who felt no sympathy for racists and hated their existence as much as they hated mine. As I got older, I became wiser and started understanding things differently. I realized they're the product of an unfortunate upbringing and weren't given the chance to be around different people, to love one another and see that our outward differences don't reflect who we are on the inside, or that who we are on the inside can't be determined by our appearance. These are things I learned naturally in a diverse environment. Their life was different, their views & beliefs were shaped by their parents through keeping them away from other ethnic groups and feeding them information about us that paints us negatively. Without proper exposure, the only perspective they do have is that of their parents, grandparents, etc. It's indoctrination, brainwashing. Once I realized that, it became impossible for me to hate them, I instead felt bad for them (hatred is never healthy anyway). So I decided rather than talking crap and hurling out insults if someone says something racist, I should preach love. They can call me the N word a 100 times, it won't hurt me because they're calling me that. It would hurt me to see how they've been brought up in this world without knowing love. We're all born innocent, eager to understand and learn our new world outside our mother's womb. But that innocence & curiosity creates a vulnerability where negative elements can easily influence us if not safely guarded from it. Can't fight hate with hate. The existence of hatred in any capacity is due to the absence of love. Those of us who truly understand love (which is not everyone) must be the ones to deliver it to those who need it, by any means. My bad for going past my initial answer, I felt like explaining myself.

But on a more serious note - Europeans who are all now considered the same white people used to be viciously discriminatory against each other. Italians, Irish, all of them were once treated like second-class citizens in America by the German/English/French-descended old guard. Hatred and distrust is baked into the caveman mind, if you segregate the world by race then people will just find some other reason to hate one another.

It would also probably help me understand why they ended up believing the way they do. I'm a 42 year old white woman from Florida, so the racists around me don't hide it. I've been fighting them my whole life because my mom was so against racism but clearly it's not working and I'm not alone.

Thank you for speaking out. I didn't know the KKK was active in Germany, as I know there is strong legislation in Germany against that sort of thing (for obvious reasons). I can understand how a teenager without a sense of belonging could get swept up in such an organization. Hell, there's a chance I could have ended up in it too, if it wasn't for my mom's devotion to treating others with unconditional dignity. Had she not been around and I didn't have a grounding in academics, as well as access to such groups, I could easily have been in the same boat. You're more than making up the bad decisions you made in your past and I hope you've achieved a true, healthy sense of belonging doing what you do now, because you deserve it. If we want to reduce hate groups to the level we had before Trump, it will take a number of brave people like yourself trying to reach the teenage demographic that are prone to joining such groups. Thank you, and please keep up your good work.

Genuinely admitting, owning and learning from ones mistakes shows, at the very least, the will to grow and change. I appreciate you Garret, not only for the work you do now, but for having the courage to share your story. o/

all you can do is respect a man that not only change his ways but help to change or help others…most people are not that strong to stand up to old ideas and will remain trapped in something they actually growing out of out of fear of judgement… love to see people grow

Being bullied and not fitting in is never a reason to join a group like that but I find great respect in him for trying to right his wrongs and do his part

There's always those amazing families that teach you what life is really about. These families can teach us more in one family dinner than we can learn sometimes our whole life!

Good decision. A lot of people are like us.I was in a similar position long long ago. I’m glad I opened my mind to other cultures. There’s so much to enjoy! I feel bad for those haters because they don’t know what they’re missing! I plan on visiting Turkey in the near future. The food!!! Such diversity & rich history to take in. It’s the only thing on my bucket list. Thanks for sharing, much respect ✊🏼

that was so touching and honest! It just shows that humans are a social species by heart. What is Nächstenliebe called in English? Grüße aus Deutschland

"Compassion" comes pretty close to "Nächstenliebe" but they do not have a synonyme afaik.

This is so sweet. People need to just sit down and eat together and talk. It'd be wonderful if we could all do this. 🍀🍀🍀 Thank you for sharing your story. You're amazing. 🍀🍀🍀
