When I was a kid back in the 60’s we visited what is now called The Dolphin Research Center in Grassy Key. I was standing near a pelican so my mom could take a picture. I wasn’t feeding it or bothering it apart from taking at it. Mom took the photo and as I turned around to walk away, it bit me in the ass! While it didn’t break the skin, it really hurt and left a huge bruise. I was six at the time and I’ll never forget it… Damn bird!

There’s a video of a pelican eating a turtle who bit his way out of the bird’s pouch, making a big hole! Luckily for him the park rangers found him and brought him to an animal rehabber who stitched him up. That sometimes happens and the birds can’t eat (everything they catch falls out the hole.) If it’s too big to heal itself the bird can just waste away and die of starvation. Pelicans aren’t the smartest birds. 🤪

If you are unfamiliar with the author Tim Dorsey, you really should check out his books. He writes about a duo of serial killers in Florida, but they're really funny. The main character, Surge Storms, only kills people who disgrace "old Florida." You've seen a lot of it - like sticking dollar bills to the walls of a shack/restaurant. Happens all over south Florida. I know "serial killer" and "humor" don't usually go together, which makes his books even better. You can start anywhere in the collection, but if you can go in order of writing, you might get more "inside jokes."
