I will always be grateful that my mom would allow me to cook and bake with her even when I was as young as 4. I think cooking is such an important skill to have and that so many adults don't know how to do it because their parents wouldn't let them really screwed them over in the long run.
@SY-ok2dq
@SY-ok2dq 2 жыл бұрын
I agree. It's appalling that there are people in their late teens and their 20s who are unable to cook anything more than toast and fried eggs or bacon, heat up something from a can, or make instant noodles. I grew up helping my mother prep and cook various dishes, and doing housework like washing dishes, laundry (including hand washing) folding clothes, ironing, mending/hand sewing, washing the car and waxing it, and polishing shoes using polish in a can. All important practical living skills. I find it a bit strange that this woman's mother would not allow her to bake. My parents were East Asian too, so they didn't really bake anything except roast chicken and veg in the oven. But my mother let me indulge my interests in baking and making desserts, as a child. I started out with boxed cake mixes and packaged cheesecake mixes, and progressed from there through to making pancakes, cakes, biscuits, scones, cheesecakes, quiche and eventually yeasted breads - all from scratch. I always cleaned up, and also cleaned the oven. I probably started helping to cook from the age of maybe 8, I think. But if I had children, I'd get them involved much earlier. I think 4 or 5 isn't too young to start learning a little about food preparation. It's not only an important life skill, I think it's a great developmental tool and educational for young children, and helps them to become less unreasonably picky about food.

💝🧁Wow how interesting you weren’t allowed to bake. I am pondering if the ‘forbidden’ element of baking your mother instilled in you is contributorial to your passion for it. I am also pondering how often you baking, reminds you of your mother as well. I appreciate their emphasis/focus on academia, it truly is worth it. Discipline is imperative and essential throughout our lives, as long as it is applied in an overall healthy way. Would be fun and wonderful if you can play piano for us one day, maybe play a little piano while cookies are in the oven!!🥳💝

It's interesting because in my adult life, my mother has been fully supportive of my baking journey and will watch my kids when I'm REALLY busy with creating content. Their emphasis on academia was a bit over the top, BUT I will say it did teach me discipline and I am able to multitask now so I definitely owe those skills to my parents. I will definitely play piano on KZbin one day. I have ONE video where I play for a few seconds haha.

When I had my daughters I made sure they get to bake and make a mess like children do and kept photos. They know when they break a dish accidentally they won’t get a stare from me. Some kitchens don't have ovens. Baking in ovens is not a traditional thing in East Asia so many homes do not have ovens (and don't really know how to bake much), and some other parts of the world e.g. places where they get their baked breads from a huge tandoor oven, which many people don't have space for and can't afford in their homes so they go to a bakery which has a big tandoor. They still cook in their kitchens, but they just don't have an oven.

However, as a female becoming a chef in this culinary world, you learned great qualities that makes a pastry chef , because of it, your mom probably saw how well you did for yourself. Secretly,you constructed when and when not to bake(Time management), grab all the ingredients and place in a certain spot( mis en place), and clean as you go. 😏😏😏 Always 5 steps ahead… 😉 love your short stories!!❤️❤️❤️

I didn’t ban my daughter but I was extremely strict about cleanup and she wasn’t into that. Still absolutely never cleans a dish. It’s so hard as a mother. She cooks now and is careful about waste. We have to get after her for cleanup. But she’s cooking for everyone when she does, another important rule. I think your mom ingeniously achieved both goals by “banning” your baking, while she still definitely knew it was happening (Mom’s always know!) but taught you how to clean up to that insane perfection that you learned to hide what you were doing. Win/ win. Though it sounds cruel. It was brilliant. Mom’s know all. They just can’t condone all--. It was the same for all kinds of tv shows I wasn’t happy my daughter was watching. I knew it was going on but I was always “disapproving” even though I couldn’t stop her with all the school/ study related screens and her friends sharing passwords. She turned out AWESOME btw. Just like YOU!!

@SY-ok2dq
@SY-ok2dq 2 жыл бұрын
I don't understand the reasoning. I mean, all food prep and cooking involves some mess and stuff that needs to be washed. I remember being a kid and helping my mother (East Asian) make dumpling wrappers from scratch with flour and water, as well as hand cut noodles from scratch, breaded and fried food, egg battered food, deveining prawns, gutting fish, and more - all quite messy things. I helped do the dishes and clean-up as well. I made various things on my own too, from boxed jelly with fresh whipped cream through to made-from-scatch cakes, pizza, and desserts. I always cleaned up and washed dishes. I had always cooked and baked out of interest (and gluttony). I loved collecting and reading recipes. But I seemed to really be the only one in my family with a lot of enthusiasm for it. And I remember the attitude of some kids in my home ec. class in school. They weren't interested in cooking, had zero skills, and seemed to think it was a chore. So not all kids find it fun.

Living in a Chinese household I can attest that they want the best for you, for academic success and for your future. But at the same time my family let me bake and find creative hobbies but only as hobbies, nothing serious. I love to cook and bake and recently garden and they let me do those things but only as a hobby. That wasn't work for me to do later once I work a real job, find a husband and have kids etc...the same old lecture. Do what you want and don't stifle your children's interest. I remember baking a cake when I was 6 years old bc I was home alone and bored and I didn't burn down the house. My parents were at work and my uncle was at a doctor's appointment so I stayed home and randomly baked a cake. I didn't get scolded and they were happy to eat the cake that I made, it was a strawberry cake. I don't know it sticks with you as I did very well in school but I was sort of known as a cook and baker or I was know a lot about food sciences in high school or univerisry. It depends on your parents, they will always want the best for you but by letting you find your own person and interest is important too.

I was gone from the country in now in, and had to forget: the language, my father, my family whose members died while I was gone, how to be a child in those 2+ years. The killer though: "Your mom is so pretty!" then they just look at you.

Plot twist, Mom knew you were baking all along and the "you're not allowed to bake" rule was just to ensure you'd always do a REALLY good job cleaning up afterwards. 😂

I was allowed to bake, in fact my mom loved it, but at my dad's house he really didn't like sweet things. So we almost never had the ingredients for baking. I would have to secretly buy and hide ingredients like chocolate chips and etc, and then if I made anything sweet I'd have to hide that too. One thing that was hard to get around was the smell of a baked good like brownies, so I'm curious how you avoided getting caught with that!

Of all things to be strict over, it was baking? And if the house was pristine as you said she opened that closet at some point in time. I'm pretty sure she knew what was going on. She just pretended to not know so your passion can grow!
