I was raised apostolic/pentecostal. After getting married, my husband and I attended non-denominational churches while he was in the military. I really struggled in the beginning. I knew that they were "saved," but because they didn't dress and do all the things I was use to seeing, I remember saying to my husband, "they have the spirit of God in them, but they just need to be saved." My husband said to me, "did you hear what you just said?" After repeating it, I realized that my spirit was already bearing witness to the fact that they were saved. But, my head was telling me something else. God began to really deal with me, and I began to start reading the bible for myself to hear from God. As time went on, I realized that what I was really being taught, was their interpretation of what they felt the bible meant. I realize that all of us to some extent, teach what we know at that time. As we grow and mature, we find that we see differently. I thank God for my upbringing because it taught me a whole lot. Living for God is who you are 24/7 and it is not something you put on and take off. That is definitely what holiness is about. It is a lifestyle, not a do's and don'ts. I'm so glad that I found this video because God can save and deliver anybody. We must love all and live a life that pleases God so that others can see His light in us and desire to have a relationship with Him. God is soon to return. We need to be about His business. Continue to live for him.

What a great story! I grew up in a military chapel (long story, test, research, & development, big civil scientist population), and although the same building housed Protestant & Catholic services (obvz diff times) and there were other buildings for Jewish services & a small Catholic chapel, I had gotten the notion that Catholics are not Christians. Well, my mother--despite ardent Missouri Synod roots--scooted that idea out of my head. These days, working together to unify faiths is my great hope

My dad is Catholic and you were not allowed to come to Church f you were not wearing suits or dresses or skirts and I was never a dress girl myself, but my best friend and her father took me to their Lutheran church and their policy was "As long as you come to church and are here to praise god we don't care if you come in jeans and a hoodie, so long as you're here." Thank you for this video Sir. I was baptized in Jesus name in 1989. Filled with the Holy Ghost that same day. I have felt this empty space in my heart for years about the Apostolic Church. I couldn't understand why I have never felt the urge to jump all over the place and run up and down the isle. Some 35 years later I'm still hearing the same message. Church is still three and four hours long. WHY? Turn to your neighbor and say this. Turn to your neighbor and say that. Come up for prayer so that someone can squeeze my head until I fall out. Wait for the drummer and bass player to get the crowd hyped up so the Saints can fall out. I need more than hype. FRUSTRATED! 😕

We'd occasionally hold Sunday evening service at the beach or pizza parlor. A young person got saved at one such service. Who says you have to have church services in the building
@neenareadsalot75634 жыл бұрын
For some reason, I am getting these older videos in my suggested, I am glad that I watched this one. I was always getting put out of Sunday School for asking difficult questions. I read my Bible because my Mama saw me reading "Les Miserables" at 12 and said "Have you read your Bible?", I had not and so I did, cover to cover, and I had so many questions. Fortunately, we had a pastor who would welcome my questions and we would have these discussions about different things. My parents also encouraged me to go to different churches, because they believed, you have to find God for yourself. Now I read or listen to my Bible everyday, I am turning into my Mama and Grandmother, and my thoughts are "controversial" to folk who just want to put you into a box of what they think a Christian is. One of my favorite quotes is "Speak the Gospel at all times, at when necessary use words", because you can show how God is present in your life without having to say anything. Great video, Kev!

Hi Kev, just come across your video. Thanks!! I'm from a white English background. My first church (mainly white, Independent Fellowship) was similar to some of what you & others have described, in terms of expectations, esp the women. Some of us younger people jokingly referred to some of the restrictions/expectations as T.J.M. (Trousers, Jewelry, Makeup)!!! (after it split, & some of us became part of a new church). This was liberating. But I can see from what you're saying too, that there can be a lot of legalism in many churches, be they predominantly 'black', 'white' or otherwise. It's such a shame; a real distraction of the enemy, from the freedom we have in Jesus (which we must not abuse, of course, but try to stay true to our conscience). I respect the African & Caribbean churches as many folks have a depth of spirituality & insight, which I can v much relate to, which I don't find with many 'white' christians. A good friend (formerly a Brahmin Hindu) taught me much. It was great having fellowship with these folks as when they're saved, they really understand spiritual things. It's high time we all got free from the legalistic chains which bind us, & mix more, racially, culturally & church/denominationally. JESUS said the Church is a House of Prayer for ALL NATIONS.

I’ll be honest- I searched “leaving black church” out of curiosity, and wanted to see if anyone in subscribed to had a video. This one came up. I do not know Kevin from a can of paint, but I enjoy his content for years now. This was an on time video. This pandemic has a lot of people sitting still long enough to actually think about their belief system/faith/religion, and some are going to come out of this either in a different one, or leave it altogether. For me, I’ve had tastes of different ones growing up- jehovah’s witnesses (my mom), Baptist (my aunt), Pentecostal (my sisters), we even had the Mormons over a couple times-I’m sorry, that one was a little weird, and we never looked into it further. As an adult, I wound up joining a Pentecostal apostolic organization, and it’s been 18 years come December 2, 2020. I’ve been baptized, I’m spirit filled as well. Kev is right- the “saved status” varies by who you talk to.

This video speaks to my childhood. Going to every event at the church, full length skirts and dresses, not playing a lot of games, limiting a lot of television, no ears pierced, nothing but church. It made hate the thought of going to church as an adult. I left after I turned 18 and did what I wanted. Piercings, tattoos, pants, all of it. I ran hard and fast for a long time but I slowly learned that mom my way only doing what she was taught and what she thought was right. It wasn't her fault and I can't hold it against her or the church. I have moved on from those feelings of pain, anger, and frustration from my childhood. No, I am not "saved" now but I will attend church without feeling shameful or out of place now. It also helps that my mom, grandmom, and godmom are pastors now and they don't have the same harsh restrictions from my childhood. They all discovered how it became a hinderance and not a help so they elected to make their own changes in their churches. I am grateful to see this video and know that there are other people that experienced this because, for years, I thought it was just my family. Thank you for this video.

Hi Tamina, just read your comment. Yes, I can relate, as I'm certain many others can. This legalism can happen in any church, and was much a part of a predominantly 'white' English Independent Fellowship in the UK, my first church at 22, & a new christian. It split, & some of us left & started a new church, which enjoys greater liberty. But I can still sense some of the old mentality in some folks. It affected some of us for years, & I can honestly liken it to something v much like a cultic influence, even if done in ignorance by those in leadership. I'm glad your mom, grandmom and godmom have found other ways of doing things. You must have a great godly foundation from all three of them. That's a real blessing. I hope more people can get free from legalistic ties, and find true freedom in Jesus, regarding these issues. Bless you all. ❤️❤️❤️

The Holy Spirit opens our eyes when we are humble enough and then we understand things more like Our Heavenly Father and Our Savior. All these preachers that condemn other congregations - probably are trying to protect their own congregations - probably are convinced their ways are superior - and who wouldn't want the best for their "children"... But everyone needs to be converted by their own searching and reaching and seeking - not simply blindly following their leaders - not afraid or too lazy to think and put in the work to know for themselves. Good luck in your quest for the truth and homey comfortable congregation.

Dear Black People (especially black males) Given the fact that you are on the BOTTOM all over the world in EVERY CATEGORY and RULED by another people, WHY are you so OBSESSED with BREASTFEEDING on RELIGION? By religion I mean - SO-CALLED gods, devils, angels, men dying on crosses, blood, hell, heaven, building called churches, prayer, an afterlife, people calling themselves pastors, preachers, and reverends, holy books, singing and glorifying songs about hard times and troubles, running around yelling and screaming in buildings, talking to invisible characters name god and Jesus and the list goes on. Consider these things: 1. The RELIGIOUS INSTITUTION and RELIGIOUS CON MEN like in this video has been CONNING and SCAMMING people out of their HARD-EARNED MONEY for THOUSANDS of years. 2. Religion: (So- called holy men, so-called holy books, gods, devils, angels, messiah's, miracles, heaven, hell etc. is a HUMAN INVENTION.) 3. Religion is a BUSINESS. A business of MAKING MONEY and CONTROLLING HUMAN BEHAVIOR for various political, social, and economical purposes. 4. Don't believe everything you read. 5. If you believe in a god he/she is everywhere and can be worshipped at home. 6. If a being call god does exist who is omnipotent, omnipresent, and omniscient that created and owns everything it's IMPOSSIBLE to ROB him/her. This makes no logical sense. 7. If for whatever reason you MUST go to buildings called churches because you cannot help yourself, give a FEW dollars here and there to contribute to the financial obligations of the BUSINESS but it would be WISE and MATURE to keep MOST of your money in your DAMN pocket. 8. If there is a God he/she doesn't want or require your money to so-called do his/her work. God is said to be all powerful and wouldn't need your help with ANYTHING. HUMANS want your money. 9. Whether your church is inside of a garage and the pastor rides a bicycle and lives in a tent or mega church and your pastor drives a nice car and lives in a big house. It really doest matter because RELIGION is an INSTITUTIONAL BUSINESS about MAKING MONEY and CONTROLLING HUMAN BEHAVIOR for various purposes. 10. Keep your money in your pocket and don't let RELIGIOUS CON MEN BAMBOOZLE you out of it.

I have questions that my wife refuses to even discus. She wanted to be married so bad that she married me because I am an amazing person!!! I don't cheat. I am a strong provider and I am willing to share. But, I question organized religion. Is it possible to believe in God but not practice Christianity? What religion did black people practice before slavery? I have a hard time practicing a religion that was introduced to my great great great grand parents by slave owners. Seems that the Christians are the ones that are the bullies. "Believe what the book says or burn forever!" Does not sound like a loving situation to me. Why do I have to wait until I die to go to heaven. What if this is it? Can a person be spiritual without being religious? Talk about unequally yoked. I read. I am interested in history and current events in society. I am all about self improvement, building a business to be the best me I can to support a healthy relationship. She is not about that life. Someone telling me to just pray honestly is not enough. My life is a conversation with God!!! I am really not a fan of church or church people.

I was brainwashed in the China Lake California Naval Weapons Center NonDenominational Protestant Services (two pastors who had four-year posts, rotating every off two years, pastors from ANY CHRISTIAN CHURCH THAT WASN'T CATHOLIC, but never in my memory the same denomination at once). But then I tossed church out the window and clung on to God's skirts and that same way of praying you mentioned is 100. It saves me day to day. I love this, I've watched it before and it spoke to my soul. That was a while ago. I love it still. My sister (so different from me as a child) is a lesbian...she came out to me first and asked how I thought M&D would feel. "Mom's not gonna be all that wild about it," I told her, "but in my opinion they've been a bit spiritually stagnant for a while. Nothing you can say will make them stop loving you." (I knew that.) Fast forward a year. The Baptist Convention was trying to ascertain whether to permit gays & lesbians into the church, & invited individual members of each church nationwide to offer testimony. Dad got up and read a long, well- reasoned statement. Then Mom's turn came. In a shaky voice she asked, "How would you feel if you wanted to take your daughter to church with you...but couldn't, because she's a lesbian?" I cry for her love & courage every time I tell this story! P.S. My sister is WAY more femme than I am. So odds are, the congregation probably thought that the lesbian daughter was *moi.*

There are a lot of things going on there. Many of the people brought to America from.Africa were forced to adopt the church of their masters. Quite often that was Baptist. Many of the people brought from.East Africa who were Christian were Eastern Orthodox and even Catholic. The rhythms of the music and culture of Africa were brought to the new world. I am Orthodox and the way we sing hymns in Russian churches is quite a bit different than you would see in Africa. It's all good. It's all the same song!

A good author to look into is Anthony Pinn. He's my go to for recommending secular humanism from a black perspective. If in your searching you find religion doesn't do it for you, Pinn's "The End of God Talk" might just be what the doctor ordered. Anything by Sikivu Hutchison is good too.

Well it is true that you do need to pray excessively and be excited in worship to show committment in heart, but you can also be slow and meaningful to show your heart, but it doesnt determine your salvation. It is however an indicator of one's salvation when you do worship, sing, lifting of hands, gift of tongues, and even the look on their faces during worship. If they dont, then they have no enthusiasm for the LORD. Thats luke-warmness. Its just simply discernment. Catholicism is religion. Catholics can be saved but rarely are they. That church might have been a bit weird in particular though. Sounds like that pastor needed some wisdom and discernment. Im glad you saw through that though.

Jesus threw away a lot of the rules that Pharisees imposed on people. Christians get so attached to man made customs and rules, and lose sight of the words that came directly from Jesus' mouth. "Love God, love thy neighbor, all the law and all the prophets hang on these two!"

Doesn't the Holy Bible say that He has children in many folds? Bible also condemns being a fanatic. We're called to invite the lost God, not to push them away from Him with our flaws. I know personally that I can't get mad at someone for being homosexual if I've committed fornication in my life. I've lived by a nice little quote that I heard somewhere that said "I won't judge others just because they sin differently than I do".

With respect to the brother, the Commandments of the Most High must be kept, b/c they restore. However, I am with Kev when he points out that condemning those who are trying to find G-d is wrong and not what G-d intended. We have to heal with the Word, not condemn with it.
