I remember reading that Fisher's insistence to play on after the 2nd adjournment was viewed by the Russians as being downright insulting. As if a player of Taimanov's caliber couldn't draw such a simple ending. But who alas had the last laugh!

After the match loss, firstly Taimanov was checked at the border and it was found 900 duldens (that was forbidden in USSR) and the Solzhenitsyn book (that was also forbidden, maybe "more" forbidden than caring currency), secondly he was judjed by Soviet Chess Federation why he had lost all 6 games without trying to win. His wife left him after all these events, I suppose it was tough period in his life. But he was great GM! Thank you for your reviews, Daniel!

There is an important lesson to be learnt, and not just a chess one! Don't allow yourself to be crushed psychologically. Easier said than done when Taimanov was playing Fischer and when you play a strong player I know. I've had many opponents try to intimidate me and put me off in various psychological ways, but I try not to show that I'm affected, otherwise they'll do it all the more. I've never given in to it, never! Stay calm and stay strong!

Didn‘t Fischer win a similar endgame against Paul Keres (the game is somewhere in My Sixty Memorable Games). Sosonko told a great Soviet-joke that was going around after the match „you know, Solzhenitzjin got into trouble.“-„what for?“- „he seemed to have had a copy with him of Taimanov‘s book on the Nimzo-Indian Defence“ :)

Picture of Fischer in thumbnail is interestingly similar to Capablanca picture in Agadmator C saga. Both look straight into the camera saying: "You wanna play some chess? I am the best player".

It's very difficult to hold such a position against someone who just won't let up and continues to set practical problems till the very end. Just as with Magnus today, it always seems easy in hindsight, but it definitely isn't. Finding Bc8! was impressive.

Fischer played like Magnus plays nowadays, playing relentlessly even a draw position until the very end knowing the opponent is going to blunder at some point. I think Fischer and Magnus have stronger will and more self-confidence than any other chessplayer in history. But today is even harder because you can learn and check many endgames with computer, you dont need to "figure out" how particular endgames work, you only need to memorize the patterns computers show you, so it is easier to be on the defensive side than previously. But MC still keeps winning.

It is such a shame the Soviets smashed the pianist and GM after his 6-0 drubbing. Always loved how Taimanov in his collection of games said it was a creative pleasure to meet Robert James. Maybe Danny you should look at that B+P vs B endgame from Buenos Aires 1960. "Bobby" knew Averbakh's analysis, Mark not! :D

Instead of Kd6 to draw, I prefer simply Nd3 followed by Nf4 and Black's king just heads to h8 if white tries to attack and take off the knight. Any chance of Petrosian Korchnoi 1971 Game 9, it was in a book by Hugh Alexander.

8:08. White has many winning ways here : if 55...Rxa5 56.Ba4+ Nb5+, 57.Rxb5! and if 57...Rxb5, there is the prosaic 58.Kc4 or the sophisticate 58.Ke4 Kc5 59.Bxb5 Kxb5 60.Kf5 winning lots of tempo (and several other ways if you check with the computer...)

Taimanov got to find out at first hand just how cruel this game of chess can be. He'd easily draw that ending 9 times out of ten.

I think Magnus Carlsen would find Ra6 (instead of the natural but drawish Ra7) in few minutes. Some Russians told that Fischer played like a machine, but this game, like many others of him, shows that this is very far from the truth, and Fischer known it. According to Dimitri Bijelica interview to Fischer after the match URSS vs Rest of the World, in 1970, Fischer answered that absolutely he don't believe to play like a machine. Moreover he added that no human will ever be able to do it. Fischer was very honest and objective in evaluating his chess strenght. He was an outstanding pratical player.

@Zarion 11 Yes. That makes it more astonishing. Unbelievable. This was the Candidates Quarter Final and not a club tournament. Taimanov must have been shocked by the loss of game 3.

@Zarion 11 Yes. I read that the Sowjets took away his privileges and he was not allowed playing tournaments. Very sad story. But he was redeemed by the way Fischer crushed Larsen, Petrosian and Spassky.

@Zarion 11 I'm a great fan of Petrosians play. I like the way he took precautions before his opponents even knew they are threatening something. And he was a phantastic tactitian. You surely know the saying "when Petrosian sacrifices you can give up".

So they stopped game 2, played game 3 and played the rest of game 2. You would never see that in modern chess. Instead we have Armageddon games to decide classical games (Norway Chess). Fischer would be enraged by this.

I could say a thousand good things about Fisher, but the one thing that really bothered me at the time was his insistence on the Challenger having to win by two games to get the title. My respect for him as a player remained undiminished, but I wish I could say the same thing about the man.

no reason to feel ill...your endgame skills are less than adequate. i just don’t think you are even close to being equal to fischer...as the match score indicates. good thing you can play the piano.
