@@shaloamnenja12yearsago29 in spanish they'd say la torre. Which litterally translates to tower... Also it's sometimes called a castle and a castle is a.... tower... Also it shouldn't matter if a person doesn't use proper terms, if you understand. Like I'm sure you understand what I mean when I say the explosive square, R2D2, defending the remover, poking the king, or getting a second wife.

When I was in elementary school I use to have a teacher who was crazy about chess and teach me and took me with him in some of his tournaments (I was idk.. 10 - 11 or so) and even subscribed a participation for me in a tournament for kids my age back then which I haven't won but finished second place. it was the first time I ever played chess with anyone else beside him and obviously, he was beating me every time so when I finally had opponents closer to my level I had a rush of adrenaline from winning matches, i was obviously very proud of my diploma even if it was for second place... sadly, soon after this teacher left my school and i had no one else to play chess with until I discovered your channel maybe a week ago... it's been over 20 years since I last played this game (well, I had a few tries now and then but never more than a game and very few of those anyway) but your videos resurrected this passion in me. I've watched quite a lot of you videos and made and account on a famous chess site... so far, not doing very good (played 31 games won 14 and 17 losses) but I know it way too early to count victories... I have to improve my game a lot and that's what I'm aiming for. I wrote all this just to end up congratulating you for your great work and saying thank you for spreading the passion for this sport.

I watched this live in Hamburg. I was 16 years old and i have the signatures of all players. The other players were Nunn, Timman, Seirawan, Bouaziz, Torre and the german player Lobron. This event was a must see for chess enthusiasts. The TV-world cup was always between christmas and new year. In a year before i watched how the very young Nigel Short beats my idol Gligoric. In a time without Internet it was the only way to watch the chess grandmasters on TV (in germany). I had the luck to live in Hamburg and could watch live. Thx for the vid.

One of the commentators of the cup match was the then British champion Bill Hartson. I played him in an exhibition match (on of 10 playing multiple boards) in 1983. I lost (of course) but took Bill to over 50 moves, which to a club player, was an achievement in itself. Great days.

I clicked on this video because the same thing happened to me and my friend, only a week ago. We were at this event from school, and we got bored, so we went outside, and played a couple games of chess on my phone. In the first game, he blundered his rook early on, he had this weird playstyle, where he just brings his rook out after move 6 or 7. I don't know anyone who plays this way(granted, he was the only person that are on the same level on chess as me). He seemed visibly baffled, after the fact, and bought a couple cigs from a nearby shack, and just light lit it. Just thought to share this bizarre similarity.

I remember watching this game on BBC TV. Chess then was very popular, but that was largely because of the Bobby Fischer phenomenon. The Bobby Fischer v the Soviet chess might, caught so much of the media attention that chess mushroomed in popularity even being on mainstream TV. My school had a first team and a second team (imagine that today) and my town chess club was crowded. I considered myself fortunate to play board three for the town's first team.

Great stuff Agadmator. Given his historical significance (especially vs Fisher), could you cover more of Spassky? (Especially his earlier days and rise to WC)

M. Tal was the main creator of the smoking tradition at that time, in the Lviv international chess tournament which I watched live, it was difficult to see the exact position of the pieces, because it was hindered by the smoky twilight ...

Theoretically speaking... you can only have a 29min and 59 second game. Whoever loses their last second first leaves the other guy with a second.

At 10:03, Spassky didn't actually blunder a whole rook. He was just going to lose the exchange. Because the black king can move to f7, and once the rook is captured on h8, the king can come to g7, and the knight cannot escape from the corner. The king will capture it. It would be winning for Karpov nevertheless, but the extent of material loss was not stated correctly.
