If you want to do all the cups, you need to get 1st on all master level cups to unlock the final AX cup. Also you should try story mode once you unlock all the chapters.

For me, the ghost was never the problem. The problem was surviving that last turn on the last lap. First two laps, no problem. Last lap? Suddenly, Captain Falcon turns like he drank that celebratory champagne a little early.

I really hope you play more of this! A few tips if you want them: 1. There is a sharp turn you can do by pressing L+R and then immediately releasing, but holding down the button in the direction you wanna go. So L+R > hold R makes a sharp right turn. And the opposite for left. It's REALLY useful. Doing a Z spin also slows you down a bit but makes you turn sharper, so you can use it with boosts for certain turns. 2. The control stick is very sensitive. You have to just barely tilt it or you might lose speed from turning too sharply. Holding L or R also slows you down a bit. For sharp turns, use the above method. 3. Jumps are actually super good, you just have to make sure to not tilt back while you're in the air or you lose all your momentum. Tilting forward makes you fall faster, but you won't fly as far. 4. Clearing all cups on master mode unlocks the final cup. That's REALLY difficult to do, so you'll have to get used to how the game controls or you won't get there. Also, would love to see you do the story mode! There is some great stuff there. This is my favorite racing game of all time, and honestly one of my favorite games of all time period.

Little addendum to the 4th one: you can also get it if you manage to place 1st on every track on an F-Zero AX arcade machine with a GC memory card inserted into the machine. If the GC memory card has GX data, it’ll unlock the AX tracks automatically.

Heads up Ryu: the thing that makes grown men weak at the knees is the "Story" mode, it's the middle option on the main menu. You will need enough tickets to unlock the missions though and there's 3 difficulties, normal is "doable" to an adult with enough gaming experience, but it's Hard that will do very nasty things to you and especially Very Hard has likely ever been legitimately completed only by a small number of people on earth. For accel vs max speed at the start of races, you want all of one or the other. Max our your accel if you're going to do snaking, or go all in on max speed if not. I'd recommend the latter for you. This will probably get you killed but I'll mention that you get +10% extra speed from hitting the edges of boost pads, best of luck with that. And of course, I'd love to see more absolutely yes!

Indeed it is. Waaaaay harder than the cups. Back in the day, I managed to beat all 5 cups without too much stuggle, but never manged to beat story chapter 7 even on the second of three difficulties.

I only remember two story missions....racing Goro in the canyon and it was not laps, but get to the finish line first! That was brutal. And then at the end you beat Black Bull only for the true villain to show up and he's freaking fast as hell, you swear he's cheating lol.

Simulating the physics for every vehicle would be very taxing on the CPU, and it would be much harder to program the computer to properly drive in that situation. Still, you're supposed to be skilled enough to beat that level of cheating.

Hey, Ryu, By seeing your overall driving technique, I recon this might help: Think about the F-Zero vehicle as a motorcycle. Whenever you want to turn, you also need to lean a little bit with your body. R and L allows the vehicle to lean, so if you want to turn you have to both use the joystick to tell the vehicle where you are going and use R or L (depending the direction) to make the vehicle lean in that direction and mantain its balance. If this is not done, everytime you gain speed and try to turn, your vehicle will either loose its balance or slightly move as expected. Give it a try!

This has been part of F-Zero since the very first game I think, it's also a mechanic in F-Zero 99 (and explained there at the start). It's essentially like drifting in Mario Kart. Kinda weird how Ryu hasn't really been doing this so far (?).

That's sliding. You can also press both L and R for actual drifting, very useful for the tighter turns

If I remember right, holding both shoulder buttons puts you into a drift. You have no traction, but in terms of what direction you're pointed, you can turn on a dime. Then release the shoulder buttons, get your traction back, and zip off in the new direction. Very tricky to pull off, but incredibly satisfying when you make a crazy sharp turn without slowing down.

The Möbius-Ring is a novelty track. The joke is that it is a Möbiusstrip and you race on the top and bottom of a single band but from the point of view of the racers it looks like big loop. I love it for the conept alone. With a little bit of experience one can easily kill off the whole competition on this track. ^_^

I love how the healing pits are stacked directly on opposite sides of the ring, so one protrudes out and the other is in a trench. Both are challenging to stay in for different reasons, balancing on top of one and overshooting the other.

Would definitely love to see you do the rest of the content, especially since there's yet another cup to unlock after Diamond, and you haven't even seen the craziest tracks yet. And honestly, I just would like to see this game get more attention, it was pretty awesome, but I think how hard it can get turned too many people off. Oh and some advice from my hazy memory if you do decide to play more: if I remember right, L and R lean the vehicle in their respective directions, but holding both lets you kind of drift, and if while drifting you let off L, or R, but not both, you can then make a particularly tight turn suddenly in that direction. It can allow you to take turns faster than normal and can help make some tracks that feel too unreasonable more manageable once you get the hang of it.

"I thought I hated this game at first but now I absolutely love it." I went through the SAME feelings. When you realize just how much control you have and speed you can gain by using the tools available to you this game completely opens up... several times over as you learn more little tricks. GX is IMO the greatest racing game ever made. There is an entirely new difficulty called "AX" that you can unlock if you are good enough... I have no idea how because it's almost impossible. The story mode is actually what is insanely difficult, to the point where most can't ever get past the 2nd stage. The voice acting is corny AF, but they kind of salvage it with complete ridiculousness. I think that changes the vibe of what an F-Zero game is, but I think it was the right choice for this title considering the apparently terrible budget for hiring voice actors. the amount of things to unlock doesn't exist in modern games because it would all be microtransactions and DLC.... I mean, after all these years I've never gotten close to doing everything in this game, and at the end of the day it comes down to a skill issue. That's a beautiful place to be for a competitive game like this; imagine what this would feel like with online.

AX is not a difficulty mode, just a cup that you unlock after beating every other cup at master difficulty or by bringing your GC memory card to an arcade that has an F-Zero AX machine and beat the tracks there. The cup is not even available from the start in every mode, you have to redeem 5 courses from the shop (with the arcade method you'd unlock tracks singularly as you beat them) and the sixth and last track, Sonic Oval, is unlocked after beating AX cup in the GP IIRC

If you had a GX save, you could bring your Gamecube memory card and insert it in the machine to unlock special characters on your save file. The seat in the arcade version was loaded with hydraulics, so you would tilt forward and back as well as side to side to match the action of your steering. It would really toss you around if you got rammed or hit a wall. It was awesome.

Take out rivals with the side attack, use the shoulder buttons to maintain control, go into a slide and boost around corners, look behind you and spin when others approach from behind, retire enough opponents during a race to gain an extra life.

So, GX's Grand Prix mode is actually kinda fair, except for two deceptively difficult tracks in the Sapphire Cup (Big Blue: Drift Highway and Mute City: Serial Gaps) and Phantom Road: Slim Line Slits in the Diamond Cup. It's Story Mode that's a MASSIVE pain in the ass.

F-Zero is such an underrated gem. GX is STILL one of my favorite games of all time Edit: a few tips 1. Rivals will be whoever is in first (or if you're in first, the racer in second). View it as the person to beat. If you kill your rival, the next racer in line will become your rival. Killing your rival will also guarantee that they will get zero points for the race. Its a good trick to keep in mind when you need to close large gaps or prevent someone from catching up in points. 2. You almost never want to pull your vehicle up in the air. It doesnt work like in the SNES/99 games. You'll basically lose all acceleration and come to a stop until you land again. So dont pull up on that jump pad in Sapphire cup mute city. Pushing down could actually help going a little faster too i think 3. I cant remember if its 5 or 10 but killing a certain amount of racers will give you another retry. You could get some pretty big cheese that i used all the time on master difficulty just kill the right amount of racers early on and if you dont like your placement, restart the race before the finish line. Rinse and repeat until you get a good placement. Or, y'know, just git gud lol Thats all I can think of for right now. Enjoy this game, not many other racing games like it :)

This game has a lot of replay value. There’s actually a 5th secret cup, after getting 1st on master mode on all cups, and you can get hidden character unlocks and machines from Very Hard Mode on Story. You have to beat each chapter on normal, and hard first to unlock very hard and each chapter on very hard is a character unlock, while hard is more custom parts for making your own machine! On top of winning master mode in a Grand Prix, you get a special short video you can rewatch at any time for each of the characters, all having their own unique videos!

I recall master mode the other racers are a lot more aggressive, and I believe the individual character traits show, like falcon and black bull usually fighting. Yes and then Unlock the AX cup 😁 Tips: - Max speed is the best set up in GX - Max Accel is for snaking which is pressing left airbrake and steering left, then right air break steering right. You have to break the grip for it to work. And go back and forth real quick. -Sharp turns for Hairpins are done by pressing both air brakes and then quickly letting go of the outside one while turning. For example for hair pin left, never let go of gas, airbrake and steer left then tap the right airbrake. It breaks the grip for a second, enough to pivot the car sharply. You can also airbrake and then tap the Spin attack button which does the same thing but looks wicked cool -Rivals are the ships you need to beat to win. If you take out a rival, the next fastest cpu will take the rival mantle. -taking out 5 ships in a race gets you an extra life.

once you get used to the overall handling, try these tips : 1. try to master the Momentum Turbo technique, if you plan on spamming boost down a segment, let go of the acceleration when your thrusters fade a bit, then hit it again while boosting... for some reason, briefly letting go of the gas in between boosts lets you maintain the speed gained from the boost's added momentum just a little longer than normal. best place to practice is Cosmo Terminal on Time Trials if you are okay with a lack of walls (or Green Plant: Mobius Ring if you're not), there should be some old videos of advanced tricks to show it in action 2. get comfortable with destroying ships with the quick strike (done with X, I think) as opposed to the spin (Z). it's precise, but as you saw it takes out most AI racers in a single hit, and you're going to need it if you want to get past Story Mode chapter 7 reliably. the sooner you take out Blood Falcon and Black Shadow, the better your chances are of winning. eliminating 5 opponents in GP mode also gives you an extra continue, too. practice this one in chapter 4, you got PLENTY of targets. you also get a small amount of boost for crashing opponents.

something you probably didn't notice, if you decide to replay it: shoulder buttons don't have the same effect depending on your stick position (This is the case only in X and GX). For example, R+neutral or R+right will make you slide to the right (which you did use) but L+right will make your vehicle "rotate" on the spot towards the right (it's called drifting). Then, you can add a single tap on A to reaccelerate in the direction your turned on, making those 90° corners a piece of cake without losing much speed, pretty much.

I really enjoy your video about one of my favourite game of all time. You really should give this game another chance despite its difficoulty. Some really helpful tips: 1. Most important tip is to go to Option menu -> Calibration -> Then circle around with your left d-pad til you see a big red circle and press A-Button. The reason is it helps you to control your vehicle (any vehicle) much much better. 2. Never ever use B-Button while racing on a track. You probably already noticed it but if you press it your vehicle slow down a lot. 3. Under Customize -> F Zero Shop you can buy other vehicles (which can be either a better one than the original 4 vehicle or a much harder to play vehicle than these 4), costum parts which you can build your one vehicle (which again can be a bad one or good one) or you buy items like story mode chapters, music or new tracks (which will unlock the ax-cup once you own all tracks and beat every cup on master difficoulty at least once). 4. Playing Story unlocks custom parts as well and some new vehicles (which only unlocks through the hardest difficoulty). Keep in mind its "slightly" different than Grand Prix and its not that difficoult with the exception of 2 or 3 Chapters. 5. If you cant memorize where the bosst speed panels are (like in Fire Field) then i recomnend playing training til you figure out where they are. 6. While you are in the air just slightly tilt your d-pad "up" to have a better control where your vehicle can land. There are more tips i could give you but better would be to figure out yourself first.

Just a tip, but max acceleration means your car slides a lot more when turning. It’s good for snaking which makes it easy to win if you practice the technique, but if you want to increase stability so you don’t slide all over the place you can move it more into the max speed territory. To snake you basically just do left bumper to drift left while also holding left on the analogue stick, then go back to the right (right bumper and right on the analogue) and you keep going back and forth and essentially move like a snake. It makes you go ridiculously fast and if you practice it, it can make even master mode cups a piece of cake. There tends to be two ladders on the game. Max acceleration (I.e snaking) and max speed. Also, you can play the game on Master, and if you get 1st in each cup you unlock the AX cup, and as people have said, story mode on Very Hard is an absolute nightmare. You should definitely give it a shot one day though. I reckon you’d be able to smash it with a bit of practice and the game is so satisfying when you get good at it.

This game is a pure adrenaline rush! Honestly, Sega knocked it out of the park with this game. Nintendo just needs to hand over the keys of this franchise to another developer if Miyamoto doesn't plan on making another official F-Zero game. Mario Kart is a fun racing game, but Nintendo needs the diversity with another racing game in their stable. Glad Ryu was enjoying this one and got the hang of it. The difficulty is no joke. While I'm of the mind that F-Zero X isn't quite as good as this game, I still hope he is able to try that one as well.

Not a speed runner but took me a week to learn the tracks and placing 1st on each cup and race on master, although I had the slight advantage with all the custom parts that my cousin had. These tips will help anyone though. 1. You don't ever go past 20% or orange unless the finish line is within sight because when you are low on energy you not only can't boost, but your overall speed also lowers. Also learn how many boosts you can do before hitting orange-yellow. 2. There is a slight rubber band, but that is no excuse to relax or play poorly. Play as you would if were trying to be 1st. The only reason why you should not be 1st is if you're trying to take out your rival or get 5 take downs for an extra life. 3. Take boost pads on the side when you can by sliding into them. I know it sounds weird, but it's proven that it makes you faster than going over it normally. It's better to stack boosts rather than letting them run out before you boost again. 4. Always go max speed; reason for this is because it keeps you fast in areas of maps where boosting isn't wise just like that curvy section in Big Blue 1 though it is do able by certain machines. 5. The faster you go the more slippery your machine will get when turning or sliding so gradually lessen how hard you use those maneuvers the faster you go when boosting. 6. Always boost a boost pad or 2 distance before jumps. This makes your vehicle have hang time and able to take shortcuts that can't be made unless you built up speed before it which can mean a big loss on some maps like Mute City 2. Also don't boost mid-air unless you know there's a road below as that will force you to the ground a bit faster as well as where you point your machine's nose. 7. When trying to attack another machine you can also tail them then boost and press both L and R at the same time to do a spin; this will get rid of most machines in your way. Those choke points are risky, but worth it unless it's near the finish line. 8. Not sure if the controller your using is a gamecube controller, but the controller is important to what my next tip is. Go to options and recalibrate the stick to the game as this will help you be precise in how much you turn. The gamecube triggers don't just make you slide they make you slide in response to how much the trigger is held down. When taking sharp left I'd lightly press R then hard L (this allows you to re-direct the machine in a half-second or so) and turn left with the L-stick then let go of the triggers. This tech can allow you to boost even on turns you otherwise couldn't do with normal turning and sliding. The U turn and turn after that on Aeropolis on Ruby Cup are great practice areas for this. 9. Some of the main machines' stats are not accurate to how they perform. Other than that, I highly suggest building a custom vehicle since you can make your own with the parts you have and add decals. Have at least 3-4 speed notches and whatever else, though 2 notches in body and cornering are a good starting point. Also, the lighter the vehicle the more acceleration and slower it is. You'll also get bumped and turn easier. For heavier machines it's the opposite. Ex: Medium is Medium, but a weight of 1200 kg is not the same as 1790 kg. The machine I used was called the Blood Lizard-FX. Body = C, Boost = A, Grip = B with a weight of 1760kg. You'd need a game shark or action replay as the parts are in the game's code but are not unlockable normally even if you complete everything.

I have to say, that last Big Blue race was one of the most intense races I've ever seen. I was on the edge of my seat watching you knowing you were driving at ten-tenths. I've beaten this game on all difficulties, and I can attest that it takes no prisoners. I'd love to see you do Master difficulty and try the story mode. (Be warned, you might want to stock up on spare controllers if you do, cause you might break a few from sheer stress-grip)

growing up i was always a completionist, i needed to finish every game 100% I owned, since the NES, Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Fzero, if i owned it i had to finish it. FZero GX was the first game i did not finish, it was so hard, I remember buying a magazine with tips on how to finish it, my mom was with me that time and it was the first time she got mad at me because of a videogame, i was already in college, some of my cousins were getting married or engaged and i was still involved in doing a game 100%, and that was pretty much it, it made me rethink some things, i havent finished a game 100% ever since, I still play a lot but not like i used to, my wife did get pissed yesterday btw, when i turned on Fzero99 before having dinner, so the cycle may restart.

Gameplay spoilers ahead, here be dragons... Controls: Drifting is a bit complicated, and the effect also depends on the machine. As you know, L *or* R while going left (L) or right (R) will nudge the machine into that direction, which is called a slide turn. L+R will significantly reduce traction, allowing you to drift. It depends on the machine how much traction is reduced and, more importantly, how grip is re-aquired. Some machines get it back gradually (i.e. Blue Falcon), others hardly at all without straightening out the machine or sliding or side-attacking (i.e. Blood Falcon IIRC) and others just immediately snap into the orientation that the car is pointed, allowing for stupid hard and fun turns (i.e. Hyper Speeder). L *or* R while going in the opposite direction (L+right or R+left) will have yet another effect, which also very much depend on the machine. Seems to have a stronger effect on lighter machines. Goes into a sort of half-drift-half-slide-turn on light machines and is practically useless on slow-turning machines. How to win with slower machines: Some machines have trouble or simply cannot keep up on higher difficulties by design. They *need* to destroy opponents in order to stay on top of the leaderboard (unless you use physics exploits like snaking or are an absolute God Gamer™). Blue Falcon for example is actually not particularly fast and, because its popularity, a lot of people run into a brick wall when trying to beat the game with it. Physics are weird: The A button is an a-hole. It gives the impression that is accelerates the machine, but this is not actually true. What it *actually* does is to change the machine's velocity towards its maximum speed. While you're boosting it will change the machine's velocity towards its maximum boost speed. But as soon as the boost ends and any other time when you are above your regular maximum speed you should let go of the A button. Because keeping it pressed will decelerate you faster than just cruising - because the A button doesn't accelerate.

I played this game years ago, and, yeah, one of the things I definitely remember was how satisfying it was to crash other cars with those sideways hits. Also, I remember there was a way to take sharp turns by doing the spinning attack move through the turn.

For fire field (and any of the tube tracks), the trick is to be driving on the inside of all the turns. The boost pads are mostly aligned to the ideal driving line, as well. If all else fails, follow the pack, they stick close to the best line. Oh, and be careful of going sideways, you lose a lot of (forward) speed by angling too sharply on those levels.

for me skull/sonic phantom (sceleton guy) is the easiest vehicle to play, easy to handle and has good speed. I think you got a good idea about acc/speed ratio, I always go for even slighty more speed. for turns like 19:45 I would just press both L and R close to the same time, you should get the feel after a few tries, it lets you do turns super easy. Generally I use a lot more of shoulder buttons to steer in this game, for slight adjustments, or with addition to turning with analog stick with sharper turns You can finish as long as your corpse goes through finish line 33:30 these are not troll ramps, you have to know how to use them, its not that hard I hope you are playing with original gamecube controller, I tried playing F-Zero on emulator with other controllers and it was horrible experience I think beating everything on master would be too much, maybe instead try to beat story mode on normal. Maybe if you get lucky killing opponents you can beat master, but for a beginner its a lot, but you did amazing beating 3 cups at expert with first time playing, so who knows

This game took me probably about a year to 100%. I imported it when it came out and played pretty much every day until I slowly got everything unlocked. Story Mode I’m sure I just beat on Very Hard with luck, the time trial ghosts were a great challenge (no snaking, either!), and beating all courses on Master to to unlock the endings for ever character was just such a dream of a checklist. 99 may be the best F-Zero game, but GX is also…the best F-Zero game. Still have my save file for GX, may load it up this weekend and charge through some levels again. It’s great watching you play this!
