Fun fact: Nintendo genuinely couldn't figure out how SEGA managed to get this game to work and run as smoothly as it does on a Gamecube. They had to just straight up ask SEGA if they could see the source code to figure out how they got it to work.

I love how many people are getting F-Zero pilled. Replayed this on my SteamDeck after 99 reignited by dormant love for the series and had a blast going through the story mode again. I hope someone eventually nudges Coney to look at the pilot profile pages.

I always thought a big reason for why F-Zero has been gone for so long after this era is because that’s when they put so much money into the series, only for it to blow up in their face. In that time F-Zero had this game and its arcade version with the insane functionality it had, a GBA game, later got an anime and two games tied to that anime. The problem is though, none of those games sold well, and the anime’s dub by 4kids failed so badly that it got discontinued resulting in nobody buying the first game based on the anime, and then the sequel never even making it outside of Japan, and that sequel was the actual last game in the series before 99. This is all just an educated guess but I do think at the very least a combination of these things is why F-Zero has been dormant for so long.

That would be fairly reasonable for most devs but Nintendo makes most of their money from hardware, they don't really seem to care that much how much a game they produce sells as long as its good brand value for the company specially if the internal teams make it. Remember how they've been saying that F-Zero hasn't returned because it didn't have a great new idea? They want a very strong creative hook to justify making any new game, they hadn't one for F-Zero legit because they think GX is the ultimate version of F-Zero and haven't got a producer who has thought of anything they'd add to it that the company would approve yet. As we see now, they saw the chance of adding the 99 idea to F-Zero and it works really well, but even so they gave it to NST to develop it instead of a bigger internal team or a bigger contracted studio. If F-Zero ever returns with a big new game, it will probably be very different from GX, but it will likely be a very big deal because F-Zero has always been a technology showcase series for nintendo above anything else.

@@LealFireball I remember that point bring tossed around and, back during say, the Wii-U and Wii eras, yeah I could see that. But with battle royals becoming a big thing in recent years though they could’ve gotten on that with a new F-Zero sooner, cause 30 racers per match was already impressive for F-Zero X and GX, but obviously you couldn’t do that with human players with the available technology at the time so they could’ve totally launched a new F-Zero that had a full 30 player mode and it would fit right in with those while still being its own thing, they’d basically be making a realized version of what they most likely wanted to do since F-Zero X at least and that would’ve been a good step forward. And I think F-Zero 99 is proof that, that works, obviously that’s way more than 30 players but the fact that we have this many active players being able to play the game at once is still a major achievement for the series and even time they do need to scale it back down to 30 players for a later game that would be fine.

GX is the reason I don't think Nintendo could do F-Zero justice... because it wasn't a Nintendo game, it was a SEGA game. Specifically "AV" (who is now the Yakuza/Like a Dragon team) Obviously people can recreate the gameplay, we see that with Fast Racing Neo / Fast RMX but I'm not sure if they'd be able to get the characters down. Coney nailed it on the head with the talk of how characters really make the game. The gameplay could be great but without that spice of life it ends up not being as memorable. He also nailed it when comparing it to modern Mario sports games. I fear they'd really just "make an F-Zero game with online" and call it a day. Without a solid single player offering, I wouldn't be interested at all.

Absolutely love F-Zero GX 😁 I was able to 100% the game many years ago and to me it's one of my best gaming achievements due to the difficulty being so brutal on the harder levels. Still looks gorgeous to this day and I hope we one day get either a new game in this style or a remaster as I think if people gave this a shot, a lot of people would enjoy it.

It’s always nice to see someone realise that this game is actually golden. And god do I feel the same frustration as Coney here: Not having a **GOOD** SSX game with all the soul and charm of Tricky or 3 (former has all the personality you’ll ever need, and the latter has that slick gameplay perfected) nowadays frustrates me. I’m always down to play them, but boy would having a new 3D F-Zero and SSX be good if they keep the core if these games: The characters, their interactions, and the slick gameplay both franchises are known for.

The last video I watched from coney he literally said "Everyone wants an F-Zero game.... But do you really want it?" and went on and on about how no one REALLY wants it. I played Gx religiously when it came out. I got all the cups including AX cup and beat the Master class with Astro Robin which I was able to control better than any other machine for some reason. But because I was young and stupid, I traded the game for another game at gamestop and even deleted the file because I thought “I won’t needed it anymore” what an idiot……my F-Zero fire was lit again after F-Zero 99 and I’m curr playing F-Zero X on the 64 app in Switch. (For context, this is coming from a childhood fan of F-Zero) Watching Coney play F-Zero GX and be so enthusiastic about it really brought a smile to my face. But at the same time I can't help but just feel frustrated that there are so many people like him who simply just either didn't know about the series or didn't give it a chance until now. Don't get me wrong after a damn near 20 year hiatus of receiving absolutely nothing, especially here in the US. I must be honest F-Zero 99 really pissed me off. Of course as a fan I downloaded it immediately and I have played with it you're in there but honestly I haven't touched the game since the update with the Queen Cup released. I have played the original game on Super Nintendo since I was a toddler. In fact it was the very first video game I ever played. And after all these years all we really got was a modern remix version of the same game I've played since I was about four years old? I was just disappointed the game is fun and all but it doesn't compare to the thrill and awesome hardcore racing experience of F-Zero GX or even F-Zero X. So many smash players call themselves Falcon Mains and there are so many memes and so many people that are obsessed with the character but they wouldn't even give this awesome racing series a chance? Do people understand that this racing franchise came out before Mario Kart? ( it also performed modeseven much better than Mario Kart and holds up better in comparison as well. ) I love this franchise but I can't help but just think about what could have been the fate of this long-dormant it under rated gem if people would have given it a chance early on. The F-Zero fans have just been dealing with nothing but Mario Kart and Super Smash Brothers cameos that feel more of like a slap in the face rather than showing respect to Nintendo's best racing series. ( I'm still annoyed over the fact that racer #05 - Samurai Goroh, the pilot of the Fire Stingray, of the OG 4 machines that has been in every single entry since the very first game... WASN'T PLAYABLE since Super Smash Brothers Melee and has gone on to just be an assist trophy! 😡🖕) Seriously I'm glad f-zero 99 is finally getting people to realize the potential that so many have missed out on with this long dormant franchise but I really just wish people would have actually given F-Zero a chance outside of playing Captain Falcon in Super Smash Brothers. What irritates me most is how nantendo treats the franchise like as if Captain Falcon mute City and big blue are the only thing that people actually recognize about F-Zero? Nintendo decided to just sweep this franchise under the rug from Mario Kart instead and yet after abandoning it for nearly twenty years they don't understand why people want the franchise back? It's not that the franchise was bad it was that they marketed it very poorly and didn't try enough to get it in the spotlight. They did it to themselves. This franchise deserves to come back as a high-quality launch title on the next Nintendo platform. Nintendo needs to stop being afraid of taking risks and actually Market the damn game properly this time. Throwing online multiplayer leaderboards for speedrunning. And keep the intense action gameplay like GX all the way with a modern coat of paint and extra features and watch how good this will sell. However Nintendo needs to be confident in the product and actually Market it properly! Screw Nintendo for giving up on this franchise so easily and not giving it the proper attention it deserved. Until then I hope more people decide to download and play F-Zero 99, because at this point it might be our only chance to get this franchise out of its limbo besides Super Smash Brothers and Mario Kart cameos. F-Zero is an awesome racing series that deserves better. (Arcade Racing > Driver simulators)
